Zoubek, Gullion, Vanover, Andrews & Wasserman win at Moms Rule at Eagle Raceway

Zoubek, Gullion, Vanover, Andrews & Wasserman win at Moms Rule at Eagle Raceway

By Greg Soukup

The car count was down to 129 Saturday evening at Eagle Raceway but the fans in the stands were plentiful as The Nebraska Lottery and High Noon presented Moms Rule Night. 100 lucky ladies scored gifts as they entered and prepared to watch some fabulous competition on the high banks.

There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing.

Jeremy Down led the first official lap of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car finale in his #6, followed by Gary Laflin’s 9, the 5ELI of Marty Steinbach and Matt Boucher in the 5B. The yellow lights were lit in the corners when Cameron Thompson’s 24T and the 24R of Dillon Richards came to a halt in turn 2. On the restart Boucher and another car hit the restart cone on the front stretch, sending both cars to the rear of the field. That moved the 19 of Kyle Vanover into fourth place. Steinbach and Vanover each advanced one position on the restart. John Anderson jumped up to third the next lap to put the 21X into third. The next circuit saw Laflin and the 2X of Hunter Wergin stop on the backstretch. Vanover grabbed the lead on the restart. Anderson moved up to second the following lap. There were 10 to go when Jesse VanLaningham vaulted up to third in the 72V with Dillon Richards grabbing fourth in the 24R. Richards advanced to third 2 laps later and moved to second on the final lap as Anderson got back to third. That made the top 4 Vanover, Richards, Anderson and Vanlaningham.

He said “We got lucky, had another free weekend to come to Eagle. We always enjoy coming here, enjoying the show and having some fun. Part of winning is survival. The holes opened up just right for us tonight on that second restart so we moved up fairly quickly, then Boucher and somebody else had bad luck and hit the cone so that gave us 2 free spots. It kind of sucks for them, but we benefited from it”. Kyle’s sponsors include Cadillac Chassis by Big Johnson, Speedway Motors, Speedway Shocks, Green’s Plumbing and Heating, Anden Bruns Construction, Icon Pistons, Mel, Exotic Customs,  Maxima Oil and Schlake Farms.

The Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods were next on the track for their A. Mike Leonard looped the #82 in turn 4 on the first attempt at a start and collected numerous other racers. The complete restart saw Mary Hahn’s 17 and the 15 of Tyler Deeke spun to a stop in turn 2. When a lap was officially in the books Matt Andrews’ 22, the 7V of Adam Vrbka, the 18M of Mason Richards and Drake Bohlmeyer’s 24 were the top 4. Bohlmeyer moved to third on lap 6. Derek Hall put the 44D into fourth with 12 circuits left. Hahn spun in turn 4 with 7 to go. The restart saw McLain Reed loop the #44 in turn 4, collecting Tyler Deeke’s 15  and Claton Peters’ 11A. Adam Armstrong put the 6A into fourth place with 6 laps left. There was 1 lap left when debris was spotted on the track, setting up a green/white/checkered race to the finish. Armstrong took advantage of the restart to moved to third and passed Vrbka for second on the final lap. Andrews won with Armstrong second, Vrbka third and Bohlmeyer fourth.

Matt stated “That’s 2 weeks in a row that we’ve missed the big one in the first lap or 2. We were able to make it out and then our row got pushed up, helping us out quite a bit. That’s what happens sometimes when it’s hammer down in the heat and then slick in the feature. Some people just don’t know what to do or how to set up their car for it. But that’s all part of it. I’ve been there! Hopefully drivers learn from it and get better. It’s all about watching the track watching and preparation, You have to watch and see what Roger does to the track. Thanks to my wife, parents and father-in-law and my sponsors”. Matt’s sponsors include John Bonta Skytop Towers, Raymond Contracting,  Big Red Lawn Care, JM Billiards, All Pro, PBS Rentals and Strategic EMS.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock finale saw Brandon Fisher’s 25, the 33 of Fletcher Petersen, Ian Roschewski’s 2 and Tanner Dowty in the 7T out front on lap #1. Roschewski and Dowty both passed Fisher on lap 2 to gain second and third respectively as Brint Lemke put the 26L into fourth. Tyler Jackson got past Lemke for fourth in the 13T the next time around. The ensuing circuit saw a huge pileup on the front stretch involving several cars and the red flag was displayed. That made the top 4 Roschewski, Dowty,  Lemke and the 41 of Adam Wasserman. Wasserman moved to third the next lap. 1 more time around saw debris on the track for a caution. Wasserman jumped up to second on the restart. With 8 to go John Martinez joined the top 4 in his 00J taking fourth. 1 more lap was in the books when Wasserman snagged the lead. Dave Carter put the 2C into fourth with 5 to go as Martinez moved up to third. The final top 4 were Wasserman, Roschewski, Martinez and Carter.

Adam said “It seems like the last few weeks our car has been working really good through the middle and the bottom. Nobody else was running there, so that makes an easy path to the front. There was some good competition up front that I had to battle. It was great to see Ian up there. He’s a second year driver and it’s good to see him finish in the top 4”. Adam’s sponsors include his mother and father’s Wasserman Trucking, Black Diamond Exteriors, Tooley’s Bar, Stilton Bar and Grill, Schmidt Machine, Dillon’s Crazy Racing, Criner’s Corner and C&N Outdoors.

Dustin Andersen led the first lap of The Nebraska Lottery IMCA A in his 8A with the 81 of Mike Densberger, John Saathoff’s 96J and the 1RS of Rodney Stopak second through fourth. Clint Homan got past Stopak on lap 2 to put the 27 into fourth. Terry Hurt took fourth from Homan on lap 4 in the 24T. Saathoff moved up to second the next time around with Hurt following him into third after another circuit. Bob Zoubek took over fourth on lap 9 in the 5S and advanced to third with 5 laps remaining. Andersen and Saathoff both got caught behind 2 lapped cars with 3 to go and Zoubek took advantage, sailing around the top to grab the lead. Saathoff managed to get past Andersen for second the next lap. From there to the finish the top 4 remained unchanged with Zoubek, Saathoff, Andersen and Hurt the top 4.

Bob stated “Dustin and John got together down low behind those lappers and I went around the high side and I honestly had no idea that I was leading it. It all ended up pretty good. The track was racy, with a high groove and a low groove. That’s all that you can ask for”.  Bob’s sponsors include Baker Boys Suspension, Clyne Construction, City Slickers Bar and Grill, Kremer Storage, Pracheil Farms, Schweitzer Farms, Complete Ag and Noonan Industries.

Lastly was the A Feature for the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Justin Bolte led lap 1 in the 17 with Jay Russell in the 76 second, Adam Gullion’s 91 third and the 55 of Doug Lovegrove fourth. Lovegrove took over third from Gullion on lap 2 but lost the spot back to him the next time around. The following circuit saw Russell move to the lead. Gullion advanced to second place on lap 8 and passed Bolte for the lead the following lap with Russell falling to third. 1 more lap was in the books when Russell again took the second spot. Lap 13 saw 2 cars get together on the back stretch and become locked and stopping at the entrance to turn 3. Lovegrove moved up to third on the restart. 2 laps later Ryan Kitchen put the 21 into fourth but lost the position to the 4X of Jason Danley after another circuit. Tyler Drueke got past Danley with 6 to go, taking over fourth in the 12 before moving up to third with 3 laps left. The final top 4 were Gullion, Russell, Drueke and Lovegrove.

This was Adam’s second win of the 2023 season. He said “We started fourth row out and had a really good initial start. I knew that with the speeds being lower that if someone tried to go in on the cushion that I could shoot the middle and slide them a little bit. With the drivers in front of me kind of dedicated to the bottom and it was I and Jay Russell on top. He got out in front of me a little bit and I don’t know if he messed up or if I just had a good corner but something happened and I reeled him in down the front stretch. I felt my momentum and saw my opening so I threw him a slider. We went 3-wide down the back stretch but I came out with the lead. I just tried to minimize my mistakes and get out there as fast as I could and try to hold on”. Adam’s sponsors include Midwest Petroleum, Precise Roofing, Speedway Engines, Speedway Shocks, AL Driveline, Ultrashield Racing Products, Simpson Racing Products, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Swirlfire Screen Printing, 91 Bar Service, 91 Trucking, Big Pickle Trucking and Brenning Painting.
