Saathoff, Grossenbacher, Grabouski, Ware & Harker are victorious at Jr Fan Club Night

Saathoff, Grossenbacher, Grabouski, Ware & Harker are victorious at Jr Fan Club Night

By Greg Soukup

Junior Fan Club Night, presented by Colby Ridge and Rotella’s at Eagle Raceway Saturday night saw a great crowd enjoying cool weather and 3 and sometimes 4 wide racing.  Heats, 2 C features, 4 B Features and 5 A features provided plenty of action to keep the fans riveted in their seats.

There were no significant incidents in the preliminary action.

The A1 Iron/Sany IMCA Hobby Stocks were the first A Main for the evening. Jordan Grabouski led the first lap in the #30 with the 29 of John Meyer, Tanner Steinbach in the 5 and Austin Brauner’s 10A rounding out the top 4. Shane Stutzman vaulted up to third in the 22S on lap 2, moving Steinbach to fourth. Marty Steinbach’s 5ELI stopped at the top of turn 4 the next time around, slowing the action. On the restart Damon Richards put the 68 into fourth. The next circuit saw another yellow flag for debris. Richards ended up barrel rolling his mount in turns 1 & 2 on lap 6. After the tow crew righted his car he drove it back to the pits. That allowed Kyle Vanover’s 19 to move up to fourth. Vanover used the restart to advance to third with the 1R of Cade Richards taking the fourth position. Lap 9 saw another debris caution. Cade Richards passed Vanover on lap 8 for third but lost the spot back to him a couple laps later. Marty Steinbach and the 9 of Gary Laflin stopped in 3 and 4 with 9 laps left. Cade Richards again got past Vanover with 7 circuits remaining but lost the spot to Stutzman as Vanover advanced to second. At the finish it was Grabouski, Vanover, Stutzman and Richards.

“It was good to just finish a race because the last couple of weeks we haven’t been able to finish, so that was great. We had a really fast car tonight but when you start closer to the front it really helps. We put ourselves in all the right positions tonight with the stock car, won that and had a great modified race too so that’s a good night. Both cars are in 1 piece, we can load them and 1 is on the front straight”. Jordan’s sponsors include Friesen Chevrolet, CBD Racing Shocks, Kaiser Manufacturing, GRT Race Cars, Mook Trucking, Wojo Painting, Sybesma Graphics, Stone Oilfield Service, Hergott Farms, Performance Bodies and Dirt Defender.

Next up were the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Tanner Dowty’s 7T, the 2K of Kyle Schamp, Tyler Jackson in the 13 and 22 of Brian Cudly were out front on lap 1. Lap 2 saw 24R of Dillon Richards make a huge move around the top of the track to grab the lead. Jackson moved up to second the following lap. Lap 5 saw the 04 of Sal Hernandez advance to third, putting Schamp in fourth. Cudly stopped in turns 3 & 4 on lap 8 for a caution. Hernandez dropped to the infield with 10 to go, allowing Jeff Ware to take over the fourth spot. Ware took over third the next time around and advanced to second with 3 circuits left. Richards spun to the infield the next lap but came back on the track in third. The final top 4 were Ware, Jackson, Richards and Schamp.

“We got up to second and Dillon is a pretty good racer; I can’t believe he spun out! He’s a good guy who runs hard here and he’s fast. So yeah, he kind of gave that one to me. I was definitely catching him, but I probably needed a caution. That would have helped. The track was rough tonight, but that’s because of all the rain. I got my shocks claimed tonight, so I want to thank CPD shocks for putting such good shocks on the car that other people want them”. Jeff’s other sponsors include Cork and Barrel, BT’s Bar, Shane’s Repair, Hein Auto Body, T&R Auto Repair, Swift Springs, Quick Performance, Dynamic Drivelines, Charger Chassis and Demon Decals.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds rolled onto the track next. The top 4 after 1 circuit were Norm Ziegenbein in the 1Z, Johnny Saathoff’s 96J, Josh Blumer in the 21 and the 96 of Jaxon Saathoff. There was a 5-car pileup in turns 1 & 2 the next time around involving Clint Homan’s 27, Chad Andersen’s 8C, the 6 of Ryan Jenkins and Shane Hiatt in the 21H and 1 other racer. A lap after the action got going again Ziegenbein looped his car in turns 1 and 2, making the top 4 Johnny Saathoff, Blumer, Jaxon Saathoff and the 81 of Mike Densberger. Jaxon got past Blumer on lap 4 and passed Johnny on lap 6 to take the lead with Densberger moving to third. Andrew Bowman’s 89B spun in turns 3 & 4 on lap 8 to slow the field. Bob Zoubek put the 5S into fourth on the restart. Densberger advanced to second the following lap. There were 10 laps left when Aaron Pella looped the 3A in turn 4. Jordan Grabouski used the restart to jump the 30 up to third. Grabouski got up to second on the last lap. The top 4 were Jaxon Saathoff, Grabouski, Densberger and Johnny Saathoff.

Before his feature Jaxon and I were talking and he said he needed to win some more races. “We talked during the B Feature, and I saw the track coming along and I knew that it was my kind of track to win on. We went out and soon I was passing my dad for the lead! I checked out and never saw anyone anymore. I’m glad it was my old man that I had to pass for the lead; I wouldn’t want it to be anybody else”. I mentioned that maybe Johnny fell back to watch Jaxon win. “I’m sure that’s what he claims so I don’t think he’s getting older and slower. Plus, he wants me to believe that? Not a lot, but I’ll go with it. First and foremost, I always have to thank my dad because none of this would be possible without him”. Jaxon’s sponsors include Tom Lineweber at Lineweber Dirt Works, Bryan Clauson at Clauson and Sons, Kyle Vanover at Speedway Motors, Ricky Thornton and Jet Racing.

Mary Hahn’s 17 and the 25! of Trevor Baker came to a halt in turn 4 on the first lap of the Modern Real Estate IMCA Sportmod A. When the first circuit was officially in the books Braydon Latture’s 14, Gary Saathoff’s 96, the 27 of Dane Martindale and Dana Deeke’s 36 were out front. Saathoff passed Latture on lap 2 with Steffen Oaks moving to third and Martindale holding onto fourth. Shawn Harker passed Martindale on lap 4 to put the 40 into fourth. Harker continued his march forward, moving up to third on lap 7, second with 10 to go and grabbing the lead with 8 laps left. 7 circuits remained when Oaks moved to third again. Cole Wayman cracked the top 4 in the 18W the next time around, moved to third with 4 to go and took the second spot on the final circuit. The top 4 were Harker, Wayman, Saathoff and Oaks.

Harker’s win came from outside the 6th row and was #102 on his career. “We’ve been running pretty good; I mean, last week we got caught up in a wreck in the heat race that put us behind the 8 ball a little bit. But tonight we put a complete night together, drove the car up to the front and got the win. I got a pretty good run early, kind of slid a few cars and got a good run out of the corner. I think we got around 6 or 7 cars on the first lap, so that got us up there quickly. I need to thank my family; my wife Amy and my 2 sons. They help me out all of the time. Also my dad. They all stand behind me. Of course Johnny at Jet Racing for building me such great cars. I want to thank Zach Woods at Speedway Motors for building the power plant and Kyle Vanover at Speedway Motors for my shock program”. Shawn’s other sponsors include Tex Cattle, Patriot Crane and Rigging, BP Race Fuels, BFC Performance and Team Keene.

The Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars had a tough time getting a lap in at the start. The first attempt saw Ryan King’s 93 and the 4L of Mike Houseman Jr. make contact in turn 1 with King’s mount going off on the hook. The restart saw Shon Pointer’s 20P stop on the front stretch. The second restart saw a huge backup of cars in turns 1 & 2 with Gene Ackland’s 14G flipping in 3 & 4. That lap was declared official with a single file restart and saw Houseman Jr., the 14J of Josh Riggins, Brandon Horton in the 1B and Nate Weiler’s 4W the top 4. On the restart Joey Danley put the 14 into fourth. Horton grabbed the lead the next lap with Danley taking over the third position the next time around. Trevor Grossenbacher put the 35 into fourth the following circuit. Lap 9 saw a lot of smoke from the 91 of Adam Gullion with him stopping at the top of turn 4. Danley took advantage of the restart to move up to second with Grossenbacher advancing to third the next lap. Danley passed Horton for the lead on lap 13. Riggings again joined the top 4 two laps later taking the fourth spot. Danley stretched his lead to a full straightaway with 8 to go. Grossenbacher managed to get up to second with 4 to go. The first four to the checkers were Joey Danley, Grossenbacher, Drueke and Riggins.

However, in post-race tech it was discovered that Joey Danley’s engine had the incorrect exhaust valves in it, resulting in his disqualification and handing the win to Grossenbacher and moving Jason Danley to fourth.

“That’s not the way I want to win. I wanted to outright pass Joey. He’s been fast all year, and the guy to beat. We need to put ourselves in a better starting position. We need to do better in the heats and get out of the heats so we make the invert. We’ve been making it hard on ourselves. Tonight was a lot of avoid the wrecks in the beginning and then get to racing. We were good tonight, and I can’t thank everyone enough for their help. I kind of lucked out there, but I hate to win that way. We’ll take it and move on to next week”. Trevor’s sponsors include WC’s South, Matt Hahne’s Painting, Stop ‘N Shop, Forbes Motorsports, Skytop Towers, Buda Concrete, Fast Track Farms and Trucking, Husker Diesel, Speedway Motors Racing Engines and Shocks, Mark Burch Motorsports and Team Jack Foundation.

Next weekend is Student Breakout Night, presented by Great Clips. As usual, all 5 classes will be competing, including the Duros Dent Works Sprint Cars, Nebraska Lottery Modifieds, A1 Iron/Sany Stock Cars, Modern Real Estate SportMods & Valentino’s Hobby Stocks.
