Rock On! Night wins go to Borgman, Armstrong, Smith, Horsham and Grossenbacher

by Greg Soukup

Rock On night, presented by Sam’s Club, saw a beautiful afternoon that led to an almost perfect Saturday night for racing at Eagle Raceway. That was a very pleasant change after having lost parts of the first two weekends to the weather. But, the season opener for the weekly competition saw a huge crowd hungry for the racing provided by the 170 race teams who checked into the pits.

There were 2 incidents in the preliminary action for the IMCA RaceSaver sprints. Heat #1 saw the 27R of Jason Rakes slam hard into the turn 1 wall sending him flipping. Gene Ackland hit a tire surrounding the infield in turn 2, sending his 14G up and over in the B Feature. Neither driver was seriously hurt, but their cars were too badly damaged to continue.

The first A Feature of weekly racing saw the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds on the track. Lance Borgman jumped to the lead in his #76 with the 19XX of Mark Brandon Spanjer, Jason Harms in the 6H and Mark Leiting’s 20M rounding out the top 4. Derek Halls 44D slowed in turn 2 on the second circuit for a caution. Harms passed Spanjer for second on the restart with Leiting moving to third the next lap. Gary Saathoff got past Leiting on lap 6 to grab fourth, only to lose the spot back to him 2 circuits later. The final position change in the top four came when Leiting moved back around Harms on lap 14. The final results saw Borgman with the win followed by Leiting, Harms and Spanjer.

Borgman had been running stock cars recently, and had just moved up to the Sport Modified class this year. “I may not come back next week, because I’ll have to start in the back” Borgman joked. “It was nice to start out front. I got the lead and just never looked back. The track was real racy tonight, with 2 good lines” he stated. Borgman’s sponsors include Coordsen Farms, Penner Insurance, Hergott Farms and Jet Racing.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were up next and Nick Lindblad’s 26, the 01 of Allyn Shively, Chad Fegley in the 13F and Adam Armstrong’s 6A were the first four back to the flag stand on lap 1. Armstrong moved to third on lap 2. There was a melee in turn 4 the next lap with a large group of cars after Chad Bassinger’s 4X and the 48 of Dale Hoyle got together. A lengthy red flag period followed as the two had to be separated by the wreckers after becoming tangled. Fegley moved back to third on the restart with Tyler Saathoff putting the 16T into fourth as Armstrong took the lead. The 88P of Rick Bradley stopped in turn 2 on lap 7. Lap 8 saw the 69 of Kenny Roberts hit the front stretch wall for another caution. 1 lap after the restart Fegley advanced to second. Lap 12 saw the 22X of Cody Boone come to a halt on the front stretch. The race was called for time at that point. Armstrong claimed the victory followed by Fegley, Lindblad and Saathoff.

When asked if he planned on making the trip to Eagle regularly this season Armstrong related “I plan on racing weekly here. I need to watch out for Dad. He’s getting older you know”. He continued by saying “I started in 7th. The bottom opened up, and my car was working there. I got the lead quick and just held on for the win”. Armstrong’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Hummer Contracting, Ron Fox and Sons Motorsports, Scat Cranks and Icon Pistons.

Bob Zoubek spun the 33Z to start the Kaplan University IMCA Modified A main and caused a complete restart after he was towed pit side. Mike Densberger’s 81 was forced to the pits also with damage to his front end. Justin Wulf led the first official lap in the 86 followed by the 11N of Nathan Landauer, Shane Hiatt in the 21H and the 95 of Dylan Smith. Hiatt and Smith both passed Landauer on lap 2. Hiatt took the lead on lap 5. 2 laps later Johnny Saathoff put the 96J into fourth. Saathoff and Landauer got together on lap 12, allowing Chad Andersen to put the 8c into fourth before a debris caution was thrown. Smith took the lead on the restart with Andersen grabbing third the next lap. 1 more circuit saw the 5! of Marty Steinbach, Jan Korth’s 42K and the 7N of William Nusser come to a halt in turn 4 for the final yellow flag of the race. Saathoff again moved into fourth on the restart. The top 4 were Smith, Hiatt, Andersen and Saathoff.

“I got lucky with a good draw and started towards the front. I wish we’d kept the first start because I had gotten to second. I was running good in 3 and 4. I tried the bottom there, but it was just no good for my car; so I moved up to the top. That one restart I got a great jump off of 2 and passed Shane for the lead” Smith stated. Smith’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Speedway Engines, AFCO and Active Life Family Chiropractic.

Then the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts had their main event. Tim Horsham led the pack on lap 1 in his #3 with the 49L of Lindsey Theisen, Brad Gottsch’s 2 and the 5M of Melissa Cronin hot on his rear bumper. Gottsch stopped in turn 2 the next time around, moving Cole Krichau’s 30K into fourth. Krichau passed Cronin on lap 5 to take third. The 82B of Nick Beckstrom lost his right rear wheel in turns 1 and 2 after another circuit for a yellow flag. RJ Maas’ 88K stopped on the back stretch on lap 12 and the yellow lights were lit yet again. Spencer Pavey III made a huge move on the restart, slamming Cronin hard into the front stretch wall. The race was called on time. The top 4 were Horsham, Theisen, Krichau and Cronin.

“I’m dedicating this win and my whole season to my niece, Kim Brigham of Wahoo. She’s suffering from an inoperable brain tumor, and this is all for her” Horsham said. He concluded the interview by stating “I really didn’t expect that win. I’m still learning how to drive these things! Lindsey sure let me know she was right behind me; on the restarts she was bumping me to remind me. I knew then I better get going”. Horsham’s sponsors include U-Pull It and technical advice from Jerry’s Auto Service.

The last race of the evening was the A Feature for the RaceSaver IMCA Sprints. The initial start was called back when Dan Satriano’s 95 jumped the start. Satriano was put back 1 row for the restart. The first four on lap 1 were the 4X of Jason Danley, Terry Richards’ 18, the 1R of Matt Richards and Satriano. Terry Richards and Danley swapped the lead twice on lap 3 with Danley keeping the position at the flag stand. Shayle Bade cracked the top 4, getting her 03 past Satriano the next time around and then taking third on lap 8. Chase Weiler’s 0 spun around coming to turn 1 on lap 9 and ended up doing a slow rollover. Weiler was unhurt. Matt Richards took 4th from Satriano on the restart with Tim Fricke’s 62 also getting around Satriano. The next circuit saw Trevor Grossenbacher make a big move, taking third and putting Bade into fourth. Lap 12 saw Grossenbacher move up to 2nd. Grossenbacher took over the lead with 4 to go and held on for the victory. Rounding out the top 4 were Terry Richards, Jason Danley and Bade.

This was Grossenbacher’s second Racesaver win in a row. “Against this competition, I have to keep going as hard as I can. But, this racing is fun….really fun!! It got to the point where we couldn’t afford to keep racing the 360, plus this way my 2 year-old son can come out and watch me every week. We will definitely be here nearly every week this year!” Grossenbacher related. Grossenbacher’s sponsors include Stop ‘N Shop, Lincoln WinNelson, WC’s South, Husker Diesel and Mark Schmidt Enterprises.

Next week will see 2 nights of racing. Friday, May 8th the NSL invades the high banks of “America’s Home Track” Eagle Raceway in just their second ever race at “Thunder in the Plains”, presented by Budweiser.
