Horton, Wayman, Richards, Harker & Vanover are victorious at Dirt Track Dreamin’

By Greg Soukup

After weather caused the cancellation of Eagle Raceway’s 2024 regular season last week, we finally got going Saturday night as Nebraska Lottery and A1 Iron presented Dirt Track Dreamin’. It was cool, but it was evident that the large crowd and full pits proved that everyone was way past ready for some racing action on the 1/3 mile high banks of America’s Home Track.

Heavy rains overnight presented the Eagle Raceway track prep crew with a daunting task that they overcame with flying colors. When several area tracks cancelled numerous cars made the tow to Eagle Raceway. In all, 151  cars signed into the pits. That resulted in 2 D Features, 3 C Features, 4 B Features and 5 A Features; not to mention 19 heats!!! Where else can you get that much entertainment and still leave the venue at 10:30???

There was 1 serious incident in the preliminary action, both in the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint cars. The first lap of Heat 3 saw Alex Davenport’s 25A slide up into the 35 of Trevor Grossenbacher as they approached the pit entrance in turn 1. Davenport then flipped up and over Grossenbacher. Both cars went to the pits on the hook. Grossenbacher’s car was repaired and he returned to compete in the C Feature but Davenport was done for the night. Neither driver was seriously injured.

The A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars were the first event of the evening. Lap 1 saw the 51 of Mike Scheinost out front followed by Dana Deeke’s 36, the 99RE of Arie Schouten and Nick Beckman in the 22. The caution flag flew on lap 2 when Matt Boucher’s 5B slowed on the back stretch, but was given his starting spot back. Schouten  passed Deeke for second on the restart with Boucher taking fourth as Deeke went extremely high in turns 3 and 4. Kyle Vanover passed Boucher on lap 5 to put the #19 into fourth. Beckman passed both Scheinost and Schouten the next time around to grab the lead. Schouten passed Scheinost for second the following lap. Vanover moved up to third on lap 8. The yellow lights were lit in the corners the next time around as the 24T of Tommy Etherton spun in turns 1 and 2 with Bob Ruisinger’s #7 and the 5J of Jakob Boucher also spinning to a halt. Dana Rasmussen looped the #17R in turn 4 on lap 10, collecting the 5B of Boucher to slow the action yet again. Vanover advanced to second on the restart and the battle for the lead started. Finally, on the final circuit Vanover caught and passed Beckman for the win moving Beckman to second, Schouten third and Scheinost fourth.

Vanover started from outside of row 4. I congratulated Kyle on a great run, to which he replied “Yeah, I finally got Beckman on the last lap when he bobbled out of turn 2. I actually think he was a lot better than me tonight and just made a mistake at the wrong time. I got up third fairly quick and then it was just trying to find the right line to run at the right time. Then I needed to calm down and go where I need to in order advance”. Kyle’s sponsors include Cadillac Chassis by Big Johnson, Speedway Race Engines, Speedway Shocks, Greens Plumbing and Heating, Mel, Andenbruns Construction, Exotic Customs and the Sardesons.

The Avid Realty IMCA SportMods rolled out next for their main event. Cole Wayman took advantage of starting on the pole by leading the first lap in the 18W with Richard Flock’s 88F, the 18M of Mason Richards and McLain Reed’s 44 rounding out the top 4. Drake Bohlmeyer passed Reed on lap 2, putting the 24 into fourth place. By lap 10 Wayman had extended his lead to a full straightaway. Bohlmeyer moved up to third with 6 circuits remaining. All doubts about the victor were erased when Wayman stretched his advantage to ½ lap by the end of the race. Flock was second, Bohlmeyer third and Richards fourth.

He said “The track was super good tonight. I thought that with all of the rain we got it wasn’t going to be good, but it turned out super racey! We did get lucky with a front row starting spot. When that happens, I have to take full advantage of it and make the most of it. The car was very good tonight and everything fell into place to power us to the win. We didn’t have any yellows in the race so I had to attack every lap because you don’t know how close somebody is to you. I just went as hard as I could and it worked out for us. I want to thank Mom and Dad,  Kaleb, Matt, Dustin, Steve, and my girlfriend Kyra for all their help”. Cole’s sponsors include Vermeer High Plains, Fox Automotive, Zoz Farms, Hertz Car Rental , Kings Auto Supply , Cherney Enterprises, LLC and Uribe Refuse.

Tyler Harr led the initial circuit of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A Main in the 21T, with Bob Zoubek’s 5S second, Mike Densberger third in the 81 and Shawn Harker’s 40 in fourth. Densberger vaulted up to the lead on lap 2 as Zoubek followed him into second. Harker passed Harr for third the next time around and advanced to second the next lap as Chad Andersen put the 8C into the fourth spot. Andersen passed Densberger for third 2 laps later. Clint Homan cracked the top 4 with 9 to go, putting the 27 into fourth. 2 laps later Nate Thompson’s 3T came to a stop in turn 4 for a caution. Harker snagged the lead on the restart. The final lap saw Homan spin in turns 3 and 4, allowing Zoubek to regain fourth. Harker finally got his initial victory at Eagle Raceway in a Modified, Densberger was second, Andersen third with Zoubek fourth.

Shawn stated “The car has been good, pretty much all year. I needed that yellow flag to get around Mike and start working a line. I knew that if I got one I could try to make it happen. I was trying to be a little bit patient and still get going because I knew there were good cars behind me and that they were coming pretty hard”. Shawn’s sponsors include Patriot Crane and Rigging, Tex Cattle, Heitman Farms and Custom Ag, Final Grade, Speedway Motors Engines, Speedway Shocks, Jet Racing, Icon Pistons and Race Chassis.

Tanner Uehling’s 58T led lap 1 of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature, followed closely by Colin Hein’s 19H, the 00J Of John Martinez and Eric Chab in the 11. Tanner Dowty looped the 7T in turn 4 on lap 2 for a caution. Dillon Richards passed Chab on lap 5 to put the 24R into fourth. Richards moved up to third the next time around as Chab fell to fourth. Richards jumped all the way to first on lap 8 when Uehling slid high in turn 4. Martinez advanced to second and Chab took over third the following circuit with Hein grabbing fourth. Chab passed Martinez for second with 10 to go. Uehling also passed Martinez with 8 to go and Travis Landauer also got past Martinez to move to third as Martinez experienced problems and headed to the pits. The top 4 remained unchanged to the checkered flag with Richards winning, Chab second, Uehling third and Landauer fourth.

Dillon’s win came from outside of row 5 on the starting grid. “I knew that if I could just get around the top, that’s where I run best here. If I could get up there, get to the front and then move to the bottom to protect the lead it would work pretty good” he said. Dillon’s sponsors include Koozer Painting, Extreme Motorsport, Brock Ackerman, Brian Jurgens, Ben Tart Construction, Dad, Johnny Thomas Racing, Nelson Tree Service, S and L Trenching, Jer’s Restoration and Fabrication, Cat’s Fireworks, Freese Farms, Inline Healing, The Rail Rocks, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, In Loving Memory JR Craig-Denise, Troy Cepak, Popeye Engines & Carbs, Landrum Performance Springs, Speedway Shocks, Jet Racing, Backspin Entertainment and Aero Race Wheels.

Brandon Horton was first back to the flag stand in his 1B to lead lap 1 of the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature. Jason Danley’s 4X, the 03 of Shayle Bade and Cody Ledger in the 47 rounded out the top 4. Ledger moved up to third on lap 2. 3 laps later Cole Wayman put the 18W into fourth. Josh Riggins flipped the 14J in turns 3 and 4 on lap 6 and the red flag was displayed. Ledger took over second on the restart. Lap 9 saw Adam Gullion put the 91 into the fourth position but lose it back to Wayman the next time around. Dusty Ballenger’s 2D slowed and ended up stopping on the backstretch. Wayman moved up to third on the restart with Gullion again advancing to fourth. Danley and Gullion then started swapping third and fourth over the next 3 laps. First Danley passed Gullion, then Gullion passed Danley, then Danley passed Gullion. Gullion regained the spot for good with 9 to go. No further changes came in the closing laps with Horton winning, Ledger was second, Wayman third and Gullion fourth.

Brandon related “It always helps to get out front early. That makes it a whole lot easier. It’s not Eagle Raceway if it isn’t pretty rough all the way around after the rain. I just tried to find a fast, smooth line to stay in and fight off everybody behind us. That’s what I tried to do and it worked”. Brandon’s sponsors include Lazy Days RV, Slideways Customs Inc., Omaha Barbell, TSG Tax Services, West Omaha Jet Ski and Real Smokey Barbeque.

Following the regular racing, a 12 car Figure 8 Nebraska race was held on the front stretch. If you’ve never seen a figure 8 race, especially one held on the front stretch of a 1/3 mile bullring, you’ve missed out. Be sure to catch the next Nebraska Figure 8 race close to you.
