Bade, Homan, Richards, Saathoff & Bohlmeyer win at High Bank Thunder
By Greg Soukup
High Bank Thunder, presented by Kaplan University and Rotellas saw a great car count and a better fan turnout Saturday at Eagle Raceway. Beautiful weather, lots of racing action and a great track made for a fantastic evening.
There were 2 serious incidents in the preliminary action; both in the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars. In heat #1, Toby Chapman’s 7KX and the 57B of Boyd Peterson went flipping in turn 1. In the B Feature, Dan Nekolite’s 22B rolled over in turn 4. None of the drivers were seriously injured.
The first lap of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified Feature had Troy Sanford’s #12, the X52 of Sean Manning, Steve Osmon’s 4J and the 5S of Shelly Andersen led the field. Andersen moved up to second on lap 2 and Randy Fox put his 09RX into fourth. Fox advanced to third on lap 4 and Scott Bivens took over fourth in the S56. Fox grabbed the lead on lap 7, moving Sanford back to second, Bivens took third and Andersen moved back to fourth. Shawn Harker’s 40 looped it in turns 1 & 2 the next lap for a caution period. Gary Saathoff cracked the top 4 on the restart, taking the spot in his #96 and Bivens moved up to second. The next circuit saw a debris caution. Saathoff moved to third on the restart. Andersen again moved up to fourth with 8 to go and Saathoff took over second after another lap. Robbie Thome passed Andersen for fourth with 6 laps remaining in the 1T. A car made contact with one of the implement tires the next time around, knocking it out onto the racing surface and the yellow lights were lit again. Trevor Noonan’s 66 spun at the bottom of turn 2 with 3 to go for a yellow flag. Fox looped it in turn 4 with 2 to go. Tome passed Andersen in the closing laps making the final top 4 Saathoff, Bivens, Thome and Andersen.
Saathoff stated “It’s good to get my first win here this year. It was really a decent track for all of the rain we had, and held up really good. Saathoff’s sponsors include Razor Chassis, BSD Shocks, Wasserman Trucking and EQ Heads.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A saw Sydney Yost’s #20 lead lap 1 with Casey Moyer’s 38C, the 24X of Cody Leifeld and 26L of Brint Lemke rounding out the top 4. Moyer took the lead on lap 2 and Brett Saathoff jumped up to third in his 11B as Leifeld held fourth. Saathoff moved up to second the next time around as Damon Richards jumped the 67 to third. Richards kept moving up, taking second the next lap and grabbing the lead after one more circuit as Leifeld grabbed the third spot. Leifeld advanced to second with 11 to go. Roy Armstrong cracked the top 4 with 7 to go and moved to third the next time around, but Yost stopped in the pit entrance and the caution lights came on. That made the top 4 Richards, Leifeld, Moyer and Armstrong. Armstrong lost the spot to the 13F of Chad Fegley with 6 to go. Fegley stopped on the front stretch with 3 laps left and was hit hard by the 38A of Travis Albracht. Armstrong advanced to third with 2 to go, but ended up spinning out in turn 4; moving the 62 of Justin Busboom into fourth. The top 4 ended up Richards, Leifeld, Moyer and Busboom.
“The track was very racy tonight, with all lines open. Those late cautions made me very nervous. I want to thank my crew guy Brian Glock and especially my fiancée Ashley Snitily” said Richards. Richards’ sponsors are Demon Decals and Charger Chassis.
Bob Ruisinger’s 7, the 11n of Nathan Landauer, Anthony Roth in the 60IV and Dustin Andersen in the 8A led lap 1 of the Kaplan University IMCA Modified Feature. Andersen spun in turn 3 & 4, putting Jan Korth’s 42K into fourth. Clint Homan passed Korth on the restart to put the 27 into fourth. Landauer and Roth both passed Ruisinger the next lap and Homan did likewise after another circuit. Justin Wulf also got past Ruisinger that lap, putting his #86 fourth. Bob Zoubek put his 33Z into fourth with 9 to go as Homan grabbed first. Doug Deterding pulled his #13 into the infield with 7 to go with a fire under the hood and the red lights were lit. Zoubek and Roth swapped the third and fourth spots over the next 3 laps with Zoubek holding third after 3 laps and then advancing to second with 4 to go. 1 more lap saw Rik Gropp take the fourth spot; lose it to Andersen the next lap but take it back for good after another round. The final top 4 were Homan, Zoubek, Landauer and Gropp.
This was Homan’s first 2016 win at Eagle. “The track was great, and really fast. It was better than I thought it would be. Thanks to Corey Cruz and Riley. And thanks to my wife Kiley for letting me go out and play” he related. Homan’s sponsors include GRT, Speedway Motors, Homan Auto and Auto Zone.
The Mountain Dew Kick Start IMCA Sport Compact A Main had Zach Bohlmeyer’s 24Z out front of lap 1 with Kyle Grobeck’s 42G, the 11H of Nick Morris and Sarah Cronin’s 8 rounding out the top 4. Grobeck took the lead on lap 2 and Cronin moved to third. Nick Lindblad put his 26 into fourth the next time around and Cronin moved up 1 more spot to second. Lindblad advanced to third the next lap. With 8 laps left Scott Spellmeier jumped his 88S up to third. Grobeck slowed with 5 laps left and headed to the pits. Spellmeier ended up barrel-rolling in turn 1 after hitting the right rear tire which had come off of the 35 of Brian Cronin. He was not seriously hurt. That made the top 4 Bohlmeyer, Sarah Cronin, Lindblad and the 30K of Cole Krichau. Krichau moved up 1 spot on the restart and then took second with 2 to go. The final top 4 were Bohlmeyer, Krichau, Sarah Cronin and Lindblad.
This was Bohlmeyer’s first ever Eagle Raceway win in this, his first year of racing.
“The track really felt good. It was great to get the win; I loved it!! Thanks to my uncle George, Mom and Dad, Grandpa, Sharon and Bud Drake” said Bohlmeyer. Bohlmeyer’s sponsors include Festers Paint and Tackle, Morris Used Cars and Hardin Farms.
The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car A Feature saw Brandon Horton’s 1B, the 00 of Gregg Bolte, Clint Benson’s 100 and the 03 of Shayle Bade out front of lap #1. Benson spun in turn 4 on lap 2, putting Jason Danley’s 4X into fourth. Bade took second on the restart and then grabbed the lead the next time around as Danley moved to third. Terry Richards put his #18 into fourth on lap 8 but gave the spot up to Jason Martin’s 5X the next lap. Danley moved up to second on lap 11 as Stu Snyder put his 23S into fourth. 2 laps later Nick Bryan’s 52 flipped in turns 1 and 2. At that time the running order in the top 4 was Bade, Danley, Martin and Snyder. However, Danley headed to the pits putting Horton in fourth. Snyder passed Martin for second on the restart and Jake Bubak put his 9X into fourth. Richards flipped in turn 4 with 8 laps remaining and landed on top of the 20P of Shon Pointer. Pointer was injured and ended up being taken to the hospital for observation. As of the time of this story, his condition was unknown. After the red lights were extinguished, Martin and Snyder exchanged the second spot for 2 laps with Snyder ending up with the spot. At the finish it was Bade, Snyder, Martin and Bubak.
This was Bade’s first Eagle Raceway victory this season. “I’m speechless!! It was great to get a win on my dad’s birthday. There’s nothing better than this. I saw Stu’s nose and told myself ‘You’ve got to get going’. I’m thankful for a win here in 2016 finally, especially right before Nationals. There isn’t anything better than winning at your home track; and when it’s a track famous for sprint car racing like Eagle Raceway, it’s even better!”. Bade’s sponsors include MDR, Helget Construction Onyx Wraps, Chix Gear Race Wear, Fremont Roofing, Rowe Graphics, TJT Photography, Good Life Fitness and 905 Inc.
Next weekend is the final points racing for the 2016 season. The Eagle Shootout will feature the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks, Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds, Mountain Dew Kick Start IMCA Sport Compacts and Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars.
