Armstrong, Andersen, Chapman, Harker, & Pavey conquer Fan with a Can Night
By Greg Soukup
It’s hard to believe that the weather could have been much better as a large crowd filed into the stands for Fan With A Can Night, presented by Froggy 98 and Hoosier Tire. Saturday night at Eagle Raceway saw 146 teams show up and put on great racing all evening.
No major incidents occurred during the preliminary events.
James Hines’ 31R was first back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified feature, with Nick Beckman’s 22, the 99RE of Arie Schouten and Sean Manning’s X52 rounding out the top 4. Schouten moved to second on lap 3. The next lap saw Gunnar Pike also pass Manning to put the 25 into third and Manning fourth. Pike moved up to second with 10 to go. 3 laps later Joe Feyen cracked the top 4, bringing his 25X to fourth. Pike took the lead after another circuit as Gary Saathoff brought his #96 to fourth. Jeremy Baker spun the 3J in turn 4 with 5 to go. Beckman looped his racer in 1 and 2 on the restart. Shawn Harker leaped all the way to second the next lap as Saathoff and Schouten held third and fourth. Saathoff snagged second the next lap, but Joe Schidler in the K00 and Dion Kovar’s 18 spun in turn 4. That made the top 4 Pike, Harker, Saathoff and Schouten. Harker grabbed the lead on the restart as Pike spun in turn 4, moving Joe Feyen’s 25X to fourth. Feyen moved up to third on the restart and Mary Lenz put the #17 into fourth on the final lap. The top 4 were Harker, Saathoff, Feyen and Lenz.
This was Harker’s 1st win at Eagle Raceway this season, coming from an 11th place spot on the starting grid. “I just worked my way up slowly, because this was my kind of track! I had to be patient; stay steady and have a little luck. I want to thank Johnny Saathoff for helping me get the car turned around the past couple of weeks. Also, a big thanks go out to my dad Alan for working on the car all week while I was gone” he said. Harker’s sponsors include Friesen Chevrolet, Jet Racing, Speedway Motors and the D-Sign Shop.
Brint Lemke’s 26L, the 20 of Sydney Yost, Tim LaPointe in the 18 and Casey Moyer led the first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A, but the yellow lights were lit for a 3-way dust-up on the front stretch. When a lap was finally in the books it was LaPointe, Moyer, Lemke and the 6R of Roy Armstrong. Brett Saathoff looped his 11B in turn 4 on lap #2. Saathoff stopped on the front stretch on the restart and the yellow lights were lit again. Armstrong took third on the restart as Moyer grabbed the lead. Armstrong moved up to second on the next circuit as Mark McKinney took third, putting LaPointe into fourth. Justin Busboom looped the 62 in turn 4 the next lap. Armstrong took the lead on the restart as Damon Richards jumped the 67 into third and McKinney held fourth. Richards moved up to second on lap 7 as Tyler Saathoff moved the 16T to fourth. Travis Albracht jumped up to third with 2 to go in the #38A. That made the final top 4 Armstrong, Richards, Albracht and Moyer.
Armstrong related “I want to thank Roger for a great track every week. Also to Michelle and Racine for all that they do to make this a great race every week”. Armstrong’s sponsors include Hummer Contracting, NEAPCO, BA Motorsports and Schmidt Machine.
The Kaplan University IMCA Modified main event’s first circuit was led by Jeff Schroyer in the 007, Anthony Roth in the 60IV, Trevor Baker’s 25! And Justin Wulf in the 86. Mike Lineberry spun the 72 in turns 1 and 2 on lap 2. Dustin Andersen put the 8A into fourth 1 lap after the restart. Nathan Landauer’s 11N passed Andersen for fourth the next time around. Wulf looped it in turn 4 the next lap and Roth spun out in turns 3 & 4 a lap after the restart. That made the top 4 Schroyer, Landauer, Andersen and the 96J of Johnny Saathoff. Dana Dankert’s #5 spun in turn 2 a lap after the restart. Bob Zoubek put the 33Z into fourth on the restart. Landauer moved to the lead the next lap and Andersen followed him into second after another circuit. Andersen took the lead the next lap as Zoubek took over third and Shane Hiatt moved the 21H into fourth. Hiatt advanced to third with 6 laps left and took second with 2 to go, making the final top 4 Andersen, Hiatt, Landauer and Zoubek.
“I had to be patient and work the high side at first. Later on I switched to the low line in 3 and 4, but stayed on top in 1 and 2 and that worked really good. Then I just kept calm and kept the car straight. I want to thank my crew; they do all of the hard work, I just do the easy part….drive the car. Also a big thanks to the “Hit Man”, Shane Hiatt and his crew for all of their help” said Andersen. Andersen’s sponsors include Lawnsmith, Nebraska’s Best, Flat Foot Trucking, Southern Transport and the D-Sign Shop.
The Mountain Dew Kick Start IMCA Sport Compact main event saw Thomas Miracle’s 28, the 88 of Michelle Nicholson, Amanda Rhiley in the 51 and Tommy Etherton’s 24T lead lap 1. Lap 2 saw Spencer Pavey III put the 32 into fourth as Rhiley took over second. Miracle blew a tire going into turn 1 the next lap and dropped out. That made the top 4 Rhiley, Pavey III, Nicholson and Nick Lindblad’s 26. Pavey took the lead on lap 5 and Lindblad moved up to third. RJ Maas jumped to third in his 88K the next time around as Nicholson held onto fourth. Scott Spellmeier passed Nicholson to put the 88S into fourth with 8 to go. Cole Krichau made a huge jump the next lap, taking second in his 30K, moving Maas to third and Rhiley to fourth. Spellmeier again took fourth with 6 to go and moved to third with 2 to go. The final top four were Pavey III, Krichau, Spellmeier and Maas.
This was Pavey’s first Eagle Raceway win this season. “It’s been a rough season! This is our third car this year in fact. The track was great tonight, and the top was where it was at! When I heard Cole coming I held the top line, because I knew he wasn’t going to be able to pass me on the bottom. I need to thank a lot of folks; Lou, my Mom and Dad, Tim Horsham, the Maas family, Team Cronin and every driver out here who helps us out” stated Pavey. Pavey’s sponsors include S & K Services, Coulter Excavating, Cawb Racing and Lemka Farms.
The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car A Feature’s first circuit was led by Mike Houseman in the 4L. Hot on his push bar were the 7KX of Toby Chapman, Ryan King’s 93 and Shon Pointer in the 20P. Chapman passed Houseman on lap 2 as Shayle Bade took fourth. Bade jumped up to second the next lap. Trevor Grossenbacher put the #35 into fourth after another circuit and moved to third the next lap. Jake Bubak put the 9X into fourth after another lap. Nick Bryan looped the #52 at the bottom of turn 3. Bubak moved to third on lap 13 and advanced to second the next time around. Grossenbacher moved up to third with 9 to go and Tyler Drueke put the 12 into fourth the next lap. Bubak took the lead with 2 to go when Chapman bobbled in turn 2, but Houseman spun in turn 4 to negate the pass. The final change in the top 4 came on the last lap when Drueke passed Grossenbacher for third. The top 4 were Chapman, Bubak, Drueke and Grossenbacher.
Chapman said “The track was slick by the time our feature got run. I got lucky and got to the front first. I couldn’t believe it when the yellow came out after I messed up and lost the lead! It was great to get my first win this year, but the one I really want is the day before Labor Day at the Nationals”. Chapman’s sponsors include FMS Racing, Meyers Race Engines, Holle Home Improvement, Palmyra Bar, Panama Locker, Huenink Refuse and Thirty-One.
Next Saturday is Junior Fan Club and Scout Night. Front gates open at 5:15, hot laps begin at 5:30 and racing kicks off at 6:30. Adult admission is $10, youths 6-12 are just $5 and children 5 and under are free.
Pit gates open at 4 P.M. with pit passed costing $25. The Racesaver IMCA Sprints, Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds, NAPA Sport Modifieds, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks and Mountain Dew Kick Start IMCA Sport Compacts will all be in competition.
