Armed Forces Night wins taken by Legg, Hansen, Smith, Cronin and Martin

Armed Forces Night wins taken by Legg, Hansen, Smith, Cronin and Martin

By Greg Soukup

Although the temperatures were cool, Armed Forces Night presented by Kaplan University and Miller Lite saw a very good crowd show up to watch the racing action on the high banks of Eagle Raceway Saturday night.

Heat #3 in the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks saw Nick Beckman’s #22 do a nose-stand into turn 3 after the car behind him got into the rear of his racer and raise it enough to plant the front bumper. Although he was uninjured, his racer was damaged too badly to continue.

The NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature stopped almost before it started when Adam Vrbka’s 7V hit an implement tire on the first lap, causing the right front tire to go bounding down the back stretch. When a lap was officially in the books Randy Fox led the field in the 09RX followed by the 2R of Don Rinke, Bob Ruisinger’s 7 and the 96 of Gary Saathoff. Lap 2 saw Joe Schidler’s K00 move to 3rd and the 3T of Nate Thompson take over 4th. The 4th lap saw the 22K of Kevin Anderson make contact with another car and spin out in turn 4. Saathoff retook the fourth place on lap 5 before taking third the next time around. Jason Harms put the 6H into fourth after another lap. Harms lost the spot to the 25B of Benji Legg 5 laps later. Another 5 laps had been run when Legg moved up to third and then he advanced to second the next lap. Saathoff moved up to third after another circuit. Gary Joens Jr.’s 68 stopped with 1 to go, setting a green/white/checkered finish. That attempt failed when Joe Feyen’s 25X spun in turn 4. Legg grabbed the lead on the restart and held on for the victory with Fox, Schidler and Saathoff rounding out the top 4.

This was victory #3 on the season for Legg. “Since I didn’t make the invert through my heat I had to start 1 row farther back. I knew the place to be would be the high side, but everyone else was running there. I figured I’d have to make the bottom work, but I couldn’t until about ½ way through the race. Then, I started moving to the front. I didn’t really think I could get the lead, but that late caution really helped” said Legg. Toobey’s Lumber and Jet racing are among Legg’s sponsors.

Tim Kozak’s 29, the 17T of Troy Dowty, Justin Busboom’s 62 and the 26 of Nick Lindblad led the field after 1 circuit of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Main. Dowty took over the lead on lap 3, but Charlie Bartels in the 9R and Luke Nicholson in the 55N spun out in turn 4. Lap3 saw Jason Kohl’s 27 jump up to third. The next time around Kohl and RJ Macku in the 93 spun out in turn 4, making the top 4 Kozak, Lindblad, Dowty and the 6R of Roy Armstrong. Lindblad and Armstrong moved to 1st and 2nd on lap 6 with Mike Hansen jumping up to third 2 laps later as Armstrong passed Lindblad for the top spot. Mark McKinney put the #23 into third with 7 to go. Armstrong’s racer stopped at the top of turn 2 with just 3 laps left, moving Hansen to the lead with McKinney, Lindblad and Dowty holding second through fourth. Tyler Saathoff’s 16T stopped in turn 2 of the restart to bring the yellow flag out again. Lindblad moved back to second on the restart and Macku took over fourth. Kenny Roberts’ 69 stopped in turn 2 the next time around. Macku and the 42 of Rob Brown got hooked together and stopped in turn 1 with 2 ago and the race was called official at that time. Hansen, Lindblad, McKinney and Busboom held the top 4 spots.

“That’s 2 in a row. I want to thank all of the men and women who make it possible for us to take part in the greatest sport in the greatest country in the world. Thanks to Roger for giving us 1 badass racetrack to race on and of course to the wonderful employees of Eagle Raceway. I can’t forget to thank the Pit bull either” Hansen stated. Hansen’s sponsors include Keckler’s Oil and Creative Edge Designs.

Lap 1 of the Kaplan University IMCA Modified Feature saw Aaron Pella’s 3A cross the line first with Jeff Joldersma’s 66, the 27 of Clint Homan and Dustin Anderson’s 8A in hot pursuit. Lap 6 saw Josh Blumer’s 21 and the 81 of Mike Densberger get together. Both went to the pits. Homan snagged second place on the restart, but relinquished the spot to the 95 of Dylan Smith the next time around as Anderson again took fourth. Smith overtook Pella the next time around with Anderson also moving past Pella the next lap. Matt Boucher’s 5B made contact with the 8C of Chad Anderson on lap 9 and stopped to light the yellow lights. Smith, Dustin Anderson, Pella and Joldersma were the top4 at that time. Pella moved up to second on the restart. Johnny Saathoff cracked the top 4 the next circuit in his 96J. Saathoff jumped up to second on lap 13 with Pella taking third and Joldersma again moving into fourth. There were 5 circuits remaining when Dustin Anderson stopped in turn 4 and Homan hit him hard. That put Shane Hiatt in the 21H into fourth after Pella went to the pits. The final top 4 were Smith, Saathoff, Hiatt and Joldersma.

This was Smith’s 3rd in a row at Eagle Raceway. Smith related “The car was great and would do whatever I wanted it to. Those yellows after I got to the lead really bothered me. I stayed on the high side and was patient, but I knew you could pass on the bottom”. Active Life Chiropractic, Bilstein Shocks, Jet Racing, Woods Machine and Friesen Chevrolet are among Smith’s sponsors.

The Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts were up next. Larry Cronin put his #5 out front followed by the 82B of Kurt Beckstrom, the 2CS of Brian Haller and Ole Olsen’s 23. Melissa Cronin put the 5 into fourth on lap 2 as Olsen moved to third before taking the second spot the following lap. Erica Cronin passed Melissa and Haller after another circuit to put the #30 in third and Melissa held onto fourth. Josh Johnson moved the 25 into fourth the next lap. Matt Moyer’s 29 took the spot from Johnson on lap 10 before moving up to third with 5 to go. At the finish it was Larry Cronin winning, Olsen second, Moyer third and Johnson fourth.

“The engine finally held together. This is my third engine this year after I blew up the first two. Thanks to my wife and kids, and a big thanks to Cole for helping out in the pits. Hopefully, we can get a couple more wins this year” Cronin said. Cronin’s sponsors include Larry’s Auto Recyclers and Honey-Do Ranch.

Gene Ackland’s 14G hit an implement tire in turn 2 on the first lap of the Mud In America IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature, coming to a stop in the infield. He pushed off again and rejoined the field. Neil Dvorak’s 9D, the 7K of Kyle Flodman, Terry Richards’ 18 and 91 of Adam Gullion were the top four at the end of lap 1. Flodman and Gullion both overtook Dvorak on lap 2. Toby Chapman moved into fourth the next circuit and Richards moved to third the next time around. Jason Martin moved the 5X to fourth on lap 7 and Gullion took the top spot on lap 9. Nick Bryan’s 52 stopped at the bottom of turn 4 on lap 11. Martin jumped up to second on the restart and Chapman again took fourth. The next time around Shon Pointer’s 20P spun in turn 2. Martin used that restart to grab the top spot. Richards stopped coming out of turn 2 with 12 to go and the caution flag flew again. Mike Boston’s 51 cracked the top 4 with 9 to go. Shortly after Gullion passed Martin for the lead as Boston moved up to third. Ackland spun out in turns 1 & 2 with 5 to go. Clint Benson put his #100 in fourth on the restart and Martin retook the lead. As the checkered flag flew Martin won with Gullion, Boston and Benson the rest of the top 4.

This was also Martin’s 3rd win this year. “I felt like I had to redeem myself after hitting the fence last week, so I was trying REALLY hard! I was set up to run the bottom, but then it kind of wore out and I couldn’t hit the top the way I wanted to”. Martin’s sponsors include Trucks Plus and Midwest Linings.

Next weekend is the Memorial Day Dirty-ganza presented by Pepsi and Colby Ridge. Seek out your favorite driver and ask for some tickets for free admission to the races. Front gates will open at 3:30 and the pits will be open to the fans from 3:30 until 4:30. Pit gates open at 3 and pit passes are $25.
