Andersen, Williams, Wasserman, Danley & Haney lead the pack at Armed Forces Night

Andersen, Williams, Wasserman, Danley & Haney lead the pack at Armed Forces Night

By Greg Soukup

It would be hard to top Saturday for a fantastic way to spend an evening out! Armed Forces Night at Eagle Raceway saw a big crowd, a pit full of cars and the best racing so far this year. Drivers battled two and sometimes three wide on the high banks, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats.

There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing.

Gary Laflin put his #9 out front of the field on lap 1 of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car feature with Bob Ruisinger in the 7, Dylan Haney’s 12X and Jeremy Down in the 6 rounding out the top 4. Dillon Richards, points leader at the time, dropped out of the race with mechanical issues that lap. The action slowed on lap 2 as Jeremy Bohlen spun the #10J in turns 1 & 2. Jerrod Bussen looped his #71JJ in 1 & 2 on the restart to negate that restart. The top 4 remained the same when racing began again. The yellow flag flew on lap 8 as Tyson Tipsword’s 21T spun out in turns 3 and 4. Haney moved up to second with 7 laps left with Down advancing to third and Ruisinger again joining the top 4. Dan Jackson passed Ruisinger for fourth in the #3 the following lap. Nathan Landauer moved past Jackson for fourth with 3 to go. Haney snagged the lead on the final circuit to make the final top 4 Haney,  Laflin, Down and Landauer.

Dylan left before being interviewed.

Beau Riffel’s 413, the 5H of Shawn Hein, the 2X of  Preston Wieckhorst and Noah Williams’ 27W were the top four after the first lap of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod A. Williams moved up to third on lap 2. Williams snagged the lead on lap 6 with Riffel second, Hein third and Wieckhorst fourth. Joe Feyen passed Wieckhorst for fourth in his 25X the next time around and jumped up to second with 10 laps left. Adam Armstrong joined the top 4 with 7 to go in the 6A before moving up to third the next time around. The final top 4 were Williams, Feyen, Armstrong and Adam Vrbka who put the 7V into fourth place on the final laps.

This was Williams’ first Eagle Raceway win, finishing with a straight away lead. He said “I’ve been racing here for 5 years in a sportmod and it felt so great to finally get a win. I’m almost speechless! We started fifth and got to the lead pretty early. Luckily we went green to checkered because I knew there were some really fast cars coming. Everything went really smooth tonight and the car ran great. I can’t thank everybody that helps me enough; my crew, my Mom and Dad, all of my siblings and friends”. Noah’s sponsors include Amberly Dental, No Limits Tree Service, Little Giants, Farmer’s Mutual Bank of Ashland, Sons of the American Legion in Ashland, Siemer’s Body Shop, Galioda Landscaping and BTS Detailing.

Dustin Andersen’s 8A, the 96 of Jaxon Saathoff, Sean Manning in the X52 and John Saathoff’s 96J were the top 4 back to the flag stand in the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified finale. Jaxon Saathoff passed Andersen for the lead on lap 2 with John Saathoff moving up to third. John Saathoff advanced another spot to second on lap 5. Chad Andersen cracked the top 4 the following circuit, putting the 8C into fourth with Dustin Andersen holding onto third. Chad moved past Dustin on lap 10 for third. Bob Zoubek advanced to fourth the next time around in the 5S. Terry Hurt got past Zoubek with 9 to go in his 24T for fourth. Hunter Weber looped the 99W in turns 3 & 4 the following circuit for a caution. Chad Andersen took over second with 7 laps remaining. Hurt advanced to third 3 laps later but lost the spot back to John Saathoff after another lap. Chad Andersen snagged the lead from Jaxon Saathoff with just 2 laps left making the final top 4 Chad Andersen, Jaxon Saathoff, John Saathoff and Terry Hurt.

This was Chad’s first win at Eagle this year, starting from the fourth row. He stated “It’s been a little while. We’ve been having some bad luck trying to get this car dialed in. I think that finally we’re getting back to our base and back on point hopefully. We started on the bottom. Normally I like running the top side. I wasn’t sure what we were going to do. We made a plan to run the bottom and see where to go from there; figuring that if we get to the top we get to the top but I don’t think I came off the bottom groove the whole race. I got held behind a car or two for a little bit at the start but I knew my car was pretty fast. I tried to bide my time and keep the car in one piece. Before I knew it I was in fourth or third, Jaxon was leading and John was ahead of me. We were making up ground on the bottom and I didn’t want to show my cards too early. I got around John and caught Jaxon a lap or two later. I think I showed him my nose or front bumper a little too soon and he came down to the bottom. I was hoping that I didn’t give the race away by showing him the bottom was better. He left me a lane, he raced me clean the last two laps. I have to give it to Jaxon! He had a hell of a run going and I think that if he had stayed up on top it would have been really close. It was definitely a good race and I love racing with these guys!!”. Chad’s sponsors include Bobcat of Omaha, Dinker’s Bar and Grill, Big Red Towing, Countryside Contracting, Paddy McGwinns Bar and Grill, Razor Chassis, Logemann Carquest, Five Star Frameworks, Onyx Pro Decals, Flatfoot Trucking, Utility Trenching, Continental Battery Systems and Jake and April.

Lap one of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A saw Rick Bradley’s 28B in the lead, Tyler Jackson second in the 13T, the 3N of Neil Pella third and the 12 of Michael Wade fourth. Pella fell out of the top 4 on lap 2 with Wade moving to third and Dave Carter putting the 2C into fourth. Ryan Gilland got past Carter on lap 5 in the 46. Jackson got around Bradley for first the next time around. Trenton Dowty looped his 53T in turn 4 the following lap for a caution. Bradley spun out in turns 1 and 2 with 11 laps to go after hard contact with Gilland who was sent to the rear on the restart. That made the top 4 Jackson, Wade, John Martinez in the 00J and Carter. The restart saw Brendon Stigge put the 69S into fourth. Adam Wasserman passed Stigge with 9 to go, putting the 41 into fourth and advanced to third with 4 laps remaining. Debris on the track slowed the action with 2 to go. Carter got back to fourth on the restart. Wasserman made a big move on the final lap, jumping up to the lead. Wasserman won, Wade was second, Jackson third and Carter fourth.

This was Adam’s second win this season, coming from tenth on the starting grid. Adam said “It worked out for us tonight. Without that last restart I don’t think I could have caught Wade and Jackson, but they raced each other really hard on that last restart and it worked out for me to get around them. I kind of had to do some anticipation there. Wade got underneath Tyler and had to shut down going into three. I diamonded it off, got a good run in the moisture while they had to buzz it off in the slick”. Adam’s sponsors include his mother and father’s Wasserman Trucking, Black Diamond Exteriors, Tooley’s Bar, Stilton Bar and Grill, Schmidt Machine, Dillon’s Crazy Racing, Criner’s Corner and C&N Outdoors.

Last was the A Main for the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars. Mitchell Dvorak led the first circuit in the 99 with Jacob Dye’s 20D, the 51 of Mike Boston and Justin Bolte’s 17 close on his push bumper. Boston grabbed the lead on lap 2 as Bolte moved up to third. Cole Wayman vaulted up to third the next time around in the 18W. Wayman moved up to second the next lap with Dvorak third and Bolte holding onto fourth. Joey Danley got a big run a couple of laps later, moving to third in the #14. Lap 9 saw Josh Riggins put the 14J into fourth. Danley took over the second spot on lap 14. Gunnar Pike moved into the fourth position with 10 to go on lap 14. Gunnar Pike moved into the fourth position with 10 to go. Wayman passed Boston with 9 to go as Danley vaulted up to the lead. Shayle Bade did a 360 degree spin in turns 1 & 2 with 4 to go. She managed to keep going, but the yellow flag had already flown. Despite the best efforts of second through fourth positions, Danley held them off for the win with Wayman second, Boston third and Pike in fourth.

Joey started out twelfth tonight and related “I missed last week, racing my 360 in Norfolk. We won’t be here every week but we’re going to make the most of our chance to race here when we can and we got it done tonight. 2 or 3 laps in and I think I was somewhere close to the top 5 and just picked them off one by one after that. I think I was fast enough for third place tonight but the top 2 made a little mistake and I got around them. We’ll take it!”. Joey’s sponsors include Empire Fencing, The Wave, My Salesman, Nissen Hardwood  Floors, Onyx Digital Group and High Performance Lubricants and Myers Racing Engines.
