Alley, Knoell, Smith, Cain and Jochum grab wins at Diva Dash night

By Greg Soukup

Another large crowd was on hand Saturday night for Diva Dash, Super Mom’s Tribute at Eagle Raceway Saturday night. The weather was beautiful and the racing was great in all classes. An attempt was made to set the world’s record for people doing the Twist during intermission.

Also during intermission some of the sprint car drivers passed their helmets through the pits and stands to gather funds for the family of Eagle regular Jeff Osborn who lost his life during a race Friday evening. As is to be expected, the extended racing family responded wonderfully, contributing a total of $3154.66. Thanks go out to each and every person who helped out in this worthy cause.

The preliminary events were run without significant instances.

The first A Feature was for the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds. The 90 of Kevin Jochum held the lead at the end of the first circuit followed by Nate Thompson in the 3T, the 5B of Matt Boucher and Don Rinke’s 2R. The yellow flag was shown on lap 2 for debris. Boucher grabbed second on the restart and Rinke moved to third on lap 3. Gary Saathoff jumped to the third spot on lap 6 in the 96. Shelly Andersen spun the 5S in turn 2 on lap 8 and the caution lights came on again. Saathoff moved up to 2nd on the restart. Shawn Harker got the #40 to fourth on lap 10 but Geoff Olson passed him the next time around in the 2G. One more lap was in the books when Boucher got to 2nd with Olson taking third and Harker moving back to fourth as Saathoff dropped back. Richards got past Harker the next circuit. Olson moved up to second on lap 15. In the closing laps Richards again moved up to second and Boucher to third. At the finish it was Jochum, Richards, Boucher and Olson.

This was Jochum’s first win at Eagle this year. “I have to give lots of credit to my crew. They work hard day in and day out on this car. They just never give up! We keep getting better and better, and it proves that hard work pays off” Jochum said. He continued with “Thanks also to my dad, my brother and Randy Fox. We finally put it together and have confidence in each other”. Kevin’s sponsors include Workforce Unlimited, Steinhausen Home Inspections, Mower Medic, Home and Farm Insurance, MPI Painting, Neeman Refuse, Precision Collision, Custom Creations, Judy’s Day Care and Fox Man Engineering.

Next was the Main Event for the Valentinos IMCA Hobby Stocks. Tim Lapointe in the 18, the 98X of Garrett Bolander, Andrew Lewis’ 44L and the 2C of David Carter were the first four back to the flag stand on lap #1. Lapointe dropped to fourth on lap 2. Lap 4 saw RJ Macku move his 1R past Lapointe for fourth and then he also passed Carter the next lap. Shortly after that John Cain grabbed the lead and Macku moved to second. Bolander and Macku swapped the second spot on laps 9 & 10. The final change in the top four came on the last lap when Roy Armstrong, who had to race his way into the A through the B Feature moved to fourth. The top four were Cain, Macku, Bolander and Armstrong.

Cain left before being interviewed.

The Nebraska Drive Shaft and Radiator IMCA Modifieds rolled out next. Stacey Willhelm’s #3W led lap #1 followed by Scott Bivens in the S56, Chad Andersen in the 8C and Justin Wulf’s 86. Andersen moved to second on lap 2 and Wulf passed Bivens the next time around. Dylan Smith moved his #95 to fourth on lap 4 and then to third the next circuit before taking second on lap 6. It took Smith 4 more laps to get past Wilhelm for the lead. Wulf also passed Wilhelm to snag second on lap 14. Smith ended up taking the win by nearly a straightaway with Wulf holding on for second, Wilhelm taking third and Andersen finishing fourth.

Smith said “The car was great, thanks to Goecke. He really set it up right, and it shows since this is our third win in a 2 nights”. He concluded the interview by stating “I started fourth row inside, but I knew that the bottom was the place to be tonight. I was patient, stayed in my groove and waited for others to get loose coming out of the corners so that I could pass”. Smith’s sponsors include Active Life Chiropractic, Hypercoil, Bilstein, Circle Racing Wheels, Jet Racing, Eckley Racing Engines and Shocked by DSR.

Then it was time for the Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compact A Main.
Before a lap could be completed Brandon Bolin lost the right front tire from his #54 in turn 1 and the pack slowed so that he could be towed back to the pits. The first official lap ended with Barry Kinnersley’s 00, the 70D of David Knoell, Nickalaus Jensen’s 48J and the 66G of Kyle Gannon the top 4. Knoell took the lead on lap #3. Robert Cigelman’s 95C had the right rear suspension fail on lap 4 and ended up rolling onto its side in turn 3. Also involved in the incident were the 73 of Robert Greser and Melissa Cronin’s 5M. There were no significant injuries in the accident. At that time the top 4 were Knoell, Kinnersley, Gannon and Jensen. Jensen and the 60 of Kevin Zeitner got together on the backstretch on the restart, causing Maynard Kinnersley’s 18 to run head-on into an implement tire guarding a light pole entering turn 3 and Jensen also made contact with it. Both cars and drivers went to the pits. That moved Zeitner into the fourth spot. Matt Moyer moved the #29 into fourth on the restart but Zeitner got back by him before the flag stand. Zeitner moved to third on lap 10. As the cars ran the final lap Nick Lindblad moved his #26 into fourth.

“My car was really hooked up tonight to give me my first win of the year” Knoell related. He finished by stating “We’re just family and a bunch of friends all racing out here. No sponsors or anything. It’s really a family deal; just us and some friends who all love racing”.

Before the Budweiser 360 Jack Dover opted to take the ‘Back Row Challenge’ and started dead last in hopes of collecting the additional $500 for the win. Billy Alley in the 57, Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35, Mark Pace in the 31 and Tadd Holliman’s 23R were the first 4 back to the flag stand on lap 1. Grossenbacher snared the top spot on lap 2, only to lose it to Pace on lap 9. 2 more circuits were in the books when the caution lights were lit for Mike Boston whose #51 slowed and eventually headed to the pits. Holliman headed pit side shortly after that for a flat right rear tire and Grossenbacher had to be pushed to the pits also for steering issues. That moved John Klabunde’s 77 to third and the 82 of Jason Danley into the fourth spot. Alley regained the lead on lap 14. Klabunde and Danley both advanced a spot on lap 19 for second and third respectively. At the checkers it was Alley, Klabunde, Danley and Pace.

Alley said “It was great driving the Bogue brothers car. You’re not supposed to get in a car for 1 night and win, but they are a great bunch of guys who all help make this car a winner”. He continued by stating “I really appreciate George Bogue and the rest of the track prep crew for making this the Eagle Raceway that we all know and remember. It was nice and smooth and you could race all over. The moisture problem will get worked out, but I’ll take this any night!”. Jeff Bogue added “I want to send a shout out to the Osborns. We are all so very sorry for their loss”. The Bogue brothers’ sponsors include Husker Lock & Key, Silver Spoke Saloon, G & R Graphix and Spanel Engines & Wayne Lewis.
