Armed Forces Night wins go to Bivens, Richards, Andersen, Gullion, & Krichau

By Greg Soukup

Armed Forces Night, presented by the Lincoln Saltdogs Saturday night was held under a beautiful sunny sky that saw 139 teams do their best to entertain the fans.

17 heats and 4 B Features were run with the only major incident coming in the first Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car heat when Lee Bowes contacted the turn 4 wall hard and flipped his race car. He was not seriously hurt.

Sean Manning took the lead on lap 1 of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified feature with his 52X and the 98 of Dan Jackson, Shelly Andersen in the 5S and Jeremy Noonan’s 33 rounding out the top 4. Andersen passed Jackson on lap 2 for second and the next lap saw Scott Bivens put the S56 into fourth. The yellow flag was brought out on lap 4 for debris on the track. Bivens got past Jackson on the restart and then moved up to second the next lap before snagging the lead after another circuit. Adam Vrbka cracked the top 4 on lap 8 in the 7V. Lap 10 Gunnar Pike moved the 25 into fourth spot as Andersen again took over second. The yellow lights lit again with 7 to go when the 99RE of Arie Schouten and Steven Muhlecke’s 24X spun out in turn 2. Pike moved up to third on the restart and Trent Roth put the 14T into fourth the next time around. Pike moved past Andersen with 5 to go. Roth advanced to third and Gary Saathoff took over fourth in the 96 with 3 to go. At the checkers it was Bivens, Pike, Roth and Saathoff.

This was Bivens’ first win at Eagle Raceway since 2014, and came from his starting spot on the inside of the 4th row. “Our good luck is back finally! Our left rear rim got broken in the feature, but somehow it held air to the end. I want to thank my girlfriend Season, my parents, Travis, Ernie, Baron and Wade. Also, congratulations to Scott Angel on the birth of his baby girl” said Bivens. Bivens’ sponsors include Middle Creek Services, Bivens Vinyl Siding, Spyder Race Cars, Aero Wheels, Pro Shocks, Wilwood Brakes, The ex-neighbors, Jake & April, Palmyra Tavern, D-Sign Shop, Ben and Cassidy and Fast Shaft.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A had Chad Fegley’s 13F, Rick Bradley in the 28P, Cody Leifeld’s 24X and the 11B of Brett Saathoff out front of the field at the end of lap #1. Saathoff passed Leifeld on lap 3 as Justin Busboom took the 62 into fourth. Bradley got spun out on the front stretch 2 laps later, causing a caution. That made the top 4 Fegley, Saathoff, Busboom and Leifeld. Damon Richards used the restart to put the 67 into fourth. Busboom passed Saathoff the next circuit and Saathoff lost third to Richards after another lap. Richards jumped all the way to second on lap 8. With 10 to go Roy Armstrong cracked the top 4 in his 6R and then advanced to third the next lap. Richards took the lead with 6 laps remaining. The final change in the top 4 came with 5 left as Armstrong moved to third, making the top 4 Richards, Fegley, Armstrong and Busboom.

This was Richards’ second win of the 2016 season, coming from the 9th starting spot. He stated “Boy! Chad looked like he was a long ways away, but he was changing his lines trying to find the fastest way around. That’s when I started inching my way closer”. Richards’ sponsors include Charger Chassis and Demon Decals.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modified Feature’s first circuit was led by the 007 of Jeff Schroyer, Dustin Andersen in the 8A, Tim Pickens in the 00 and the 60IV of Anthony Roth. Roth passed Pickens on lap 2 and lap 3 saw Bob Ruisinger put the #7 into fourth. 3 more laps were in the books when Justin Wulf moved to fourth in the 86. Lap 8 saw a debris caution when a piece of the 007 came off, moving Schroyer to the rear of the field. That moved Ruisinger back to fourth. Wulf used the restart to vault up to second as Bob Zoubek put the 33Z into fourth. Wulf took the lead with 11 to go. There was then a caution as Schroyer slid into the pit entrance and coming to a halt there. 9 laps remained when Norm Ziegenbein’s 1Z stopped at the top of turn 2. Andersen regained the lead on the restart. Mike Peterslie spun the 25P in turns 3 & 4 with 8 to go and Shane Hiatt made hard contact with him. 1 lap after the restart Josh Blumer looped the #21 on the back stretch for another caution. Zoubek advanced to third with 6 laps left and then moved up to second the following lap. Chad Andersen took his 8C into fourth with 4 to go. Wulf took second from Zoubek with 3 to go but spun to the infield the next time around. That caution caused the race to be halted due to time. The top 4 were Dustin Andersen, Zoubek, Andersen and Anthony Roth.

“We started in fourth, so that was nice. The track was a little rough, so I knew I had to calm down. I usually run the top, but had to try the bottom. That didn’t work. I ended up with some brake fade, so I jumped the cushion and almost gave the race away. I want to send a shout out to Shane Hiatt for getting my car going” he said. Andersen’s sponsors include Nebraska’s Best, Lawnsmith, Flat Foot Trucking, Southern Transport and the D-Sign Shop.

There was a large pile up in turn 4 on the first lap of the Mountain Dew Kick Start IMCA Sport Compact A Main, causing 4 of the racers to drop out. When a lap was finally completed Justin Callender’s 13Bs, the 14J of Justin Olsen, RJ Maas in the 88K and Nick Lindblad’s 26 were out front. Lap 3 saw Maas take the lead, Lindblad take over second and Melissa Cronin’s 5M move up to fourth. Cronin took over third on lap 4 as Callender headed to the infield. That put Olsen into fourth. Olsen advanced to third with 9 to go. The next circuit saw Matt Moyer’s 29 jump all of the way up to second before spinning out in turn 3 with 7 to go. At that time the top 4 were Maas, Lindblad, Cronin and Cole Krichau in the 30K. Lindblad snagged the lead on the restart and Krichau advanced to third. 1 more lap was in the books when Scott Spellmeier put the 88S into fourth and Maas regained the lead. Krichau advanced to second after another lap was in the books, setting up a great battle for the lead over the final 3 laps. Maas and Krichau battled door handle to door handle all the way to the finish with Krichau coming home first, Maas second, Lindblad third and Spellmeier fourth.

This was Krichau’s second win this year at Eagle Raceway. He related “I want to thank my sponsors Larry’s Auto Recyclers and Moonlight Ranch. I thought the track slowed down a little this week, so I decided to work my way down from the top. I used the bottom for the win. I feel bad for RJ, but I think this was my best win ever!! RJ said he kept pinching me down in turns 1 & 2 on purpose, but he didn’t on the last lap and that’s what cost him the win”.

Adam Gullion’s 91 led the first lap of the Racesaver IMCA A Feature with Matt Richards in the 1R, the 7KX of Toby Chapman and Shon Pointer’s 20P close behind. Pointer lost fourth to the 14G of Gene Ackland on lap 2. Ackland passed Chapman on lap 6. Ackland moved up to second on lap 8 as Jason Martin moved the 5X into fourth. Martin advanced to third on lap 10. Tyler Drueke cracked the top 4 on lap 11 before putting the #12 into third and then moving to second on lap 14. Ryan King spun the 93 in turns 3 & 4 with 10 to go. That caution erased the huge lead that Gullion had built up, setting up a battle for the checkers. Trevor Grossenbacher vaulted into third on the restart in the #35. From there to the finish it was a futile effort for Drueke to catch Gullion. At the finish it was Gullion, Drueke, Martin and Grossenbacher.

This was Gullion’s first 2016 victory at Eagle Raceway. “It’s been an uncharacteristically rough year for us. But, my 1st son Barrett was born in January and we feel so fortunate for that. It changed my whole attitude and demeanor. Honestly, I was jealous of Trevor Grossenbacher last year. He got to take all those pictures in victory lane with his son; but now I finally got to do that!! The first few laps I focused on the bottom and then drifted up to the cushion when the bottom went away. I followed Ryan up there and said ‘If he can make it work, so can I’ because it gave me the chance to see where to enter the corner. I got lucky with the restarts. When I hit traffic and saw Tyler coming I knew I had to get up on it to win” said Gullion. Gullion’s sponsors include Precise Roofing, Liquid Nitro, Pro Rolloffs, Filley Customer Powder Coating, Pro Shocks, Engler, Fuel Safe and Sardeson Racing.

Next Saturday is Memorial Day Extravaganza and Driver Appreciation Night. All drivers have admission tickets, so contact them for your tickets.
