Richards, Drueke, Wade, Richards & Jenkins conquer the High Banks at Jr Fan Club Night

By Greg Soukup

Saturday was one of my favorite evenings at Eagle Raceway as Mom’s Popcorn, Empire Fence and Twin Rivers presented Junior Fan Club Night. Seeing that long line of our younger fans, jumping up and down and cheering at the thought of getting to ride in an actual race car around the high banks of America’s Home Track was a sight to see. Then, watching as they made a lap around the track with huge smiles on their faces warmed my heart.

There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing.

Dylan Haney put the 12X out front of lap 1 of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car Feature with the 6 of Jeremy Down, Travis Patterson in the 17TK and John Meyer’s 29 rounding out the top 4. Shane Stutzman passed Meyer on lap 2 to put the 22S into fourth and got past Patterson for third the following lap. Dillon Richards joined the battle the next time around, putting the 24R into fourth. Stutzman continued his march to the front, going past Down for second after 1 more circuit. Lap 7 saw Kyle Vanover’s 19 spin in turns 1 & 2, collecting Patterson and the yellow flag flew. Richards took advantage of the restart to move up to third. There were just 10 laps left when Richards passed Stutzman for second and Matt Boucher put the 5B into fourth. Richards snagged the lead from Haney with 5 to go. The final pass of the night came on the final circuit when Boucher advanced to third. The final top 4 were Richards, Haney, Boucher and Stutzman.

Dillon left before being interviewed. His sponsors include JGR, CPD Shocks, S&L Trenching and Fester’s Bait and Tackle.

There was a big scramble in turns 1 & 2 during the initial circuit of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod A when Tyler Deeke’s 15 got him very loose. Both kept going but left a pileup including Richard Flock’s 88F, Jacob Swanson’s 31S and the 31R of James Hines. AJ Oaks’ 26 was sent to the rear of the field for having cut through the infield. The complete restart saw Tyler Harr’s 21T make a big move on the bottom of 3 and 4, making contact with the 33B of Breanna Pfanstiel and Hines, causing a huge pileup including Pfanstiel, Adam Armstrong’s 6A, the 24 of Drake Bohlmeyer, Joe Feyen in the 25!, Gary Saathoff’s 96, Bobby Draper’s 62 and the 18X of Terry Richards. When a lap was finally in the books Mike Scheinost held the lead in his 51, followed by Deeke, the 18M of Mason Richards and Harr. Lap 2 saw Harr move up to third. Matt Richards passed Harr for fourth in the 22 on lap 3 with Matt Andrews put his 22 into fourth. Harr snagged the lead on lap 4. Andrews passed Richards for fourth the following circuit and moved up to third the next time around. Terry Richards put the 18X into fourth with 10 to go but lost the spot back to Mason Richards 2 laps later. Andrews passed Harr for the lead with 4 to go when Harr began to slow with a right rear tire rub. Pfanstiel and Hines both came to a halt in turn 4 with 2 to go for a caution. Andrews and Harr both exited the track during the caution with flat tires. That made the running order Scheinost, Terry Richards, Adam Vrbka’s 7V and Mason Richards. Terry Richards grabbed the lead on the restart with Vrbka moving up to second. Oaks, Hines and Shawn Davis’ 77 spun in turn 4 with 1 to go setting up a green/white/checkered finish. McClain Reed passed Mason Richards for fourth on the final lap to put the 44 into fourth place. The top 4 were Terry Richards, Vrbka, Scheinost and Reed.

Terry has a long history at Eagle Raceway, having competed here for many years. I mentioned to Terry that it had been quite a while since he visited victory lane. He replied “I think that the last time I won here was in a Racesaver Sprint back 7 or 8 years ago. Then we went off and did some non-winged sprint car racing for a while. We eventually got my son Mason into racing and built a second car for him. He struggled in it for a little bit, we had some issues that we just couldn’t quite get figured out. So, I started driving one of the cars and we hit on something tonight and found out what was wrong. It feels really good. I’ve won in every kind of car that I’ve raced in and I said to myself, ‘I am NOT too old to win in a sportmod!’. We’ve just not been able to get through the holes and Eagle is a special beast! You’ve got to get through the holes, but before the car would get so violent. I decided to make some changes because if we can’t get through the holes we can’t move forward. After the changes I made the car got through the holes great and it was a pretty good piece. I don’t think we had anything for Tyler and Matt Andrews. But I’ve been in the same situation before and I’ll take any win any way that I can get it”. Terry’s sponsors include TR’s Tool Service, Riha Lawn Mechanics, Spanel Engines, Leiting Motorsports, C&L Automotive and Greder Law Office.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified main event’s first circuit saw Josh Blumer spin the 21X in turn 4 and get pushed to the pits. Lap 2 saw Cole Wayman loop the 18W in turn two for another caution. At that point the top 4 were Dustin Andersen’s 8A, the 6 of Ryan Jenkins, Nate Thompson in the 3T and Scott Bivens’ 21H. Anthony Roth spun the 60IV out in turn 2 on the first attempt at a restart after contact with Terry Hurt’s 24T. Hurt was sent to the back of the field. On the next restart it was Dustin Andersen leading in the 8A, Ryan Jenkins’ 6 in second, Cole Wayman third in the 18W and Scott Bivens fourth in the 21H. Jenkins passed Andersen on lap 3 for the lead and Andersen spun to the infield the next time around. That moved Thompson to second, Bivens to third and the 27 of Clint Homan to fourth. Homan passed Bivens the next lap for third. Lap 7 saw Homan advanced to second. Brandon Conwright got around Homan with 10 circuits remaining to put the 24C into fourth. Thompson grabbed second place the next lap but fell back 2 spots the next circuit. Chad Andersen put the 8C into the fourth spot with 4 to go. From there to the checkers, it wasn’t who was going to win, but by how much as Jenkins took the win by nearly 4 seconds, with Homan second, Chad Andersen third after passing Conkwright on the last lap and Conkwright.

This was Ryan’s second victory at Eagle Raceway but first this season, coming from sixth on the starting grid. He said “The car was good tonight, and we had a good starting spot which always helps. The whole team is really happy with the win. The car was really spot on tonight. I usually dial myself right out, so I didn’t change anything tonight and ended up with a good run. I want to thank my whole crew that comes out with me every week”. Ryan’s sponsors include PSC Construction, C&H Construction, Precision Performance, Performer Chassis, Coslar Farms, Auto Tech, Wehrs Machine and Hypercoil.

Michael Wade led the first circuit of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature in the 12 with Tyler Jackson’s 13T, the B4 of Ben Becher and the 10 of Brad Schreiner hot on his rear bumper. Schreiner passed Becher for third on lap 4 as Dan Markham also passed Becher to put the 6 into fourth. Schreiner slowed with 8 to go, allowing Schreiner to grab third and Neil Pella to put the 3N into fourth. Dave Carter’s 2C stopped in turn 4 with 4 to go for a caution. The restart saw Ryan Gilland take over the fourth spot in the 46 but Dave Blanton’s 62 couldn’t quite make it all of the way up the pit entrance and the yellow lights were lit in the corners. Jackson made hard contact with Wade on the back stretch with 2 to go and snagged the lead as Pella moved to third and Ryan Gilland also got past Markham for third. The final circuit saw Wade get under Jackson in 3 & 4 and hold him off for the victory.

This was Wade’s second victory of the 2023 season at Eagle Raceway. I told him that those last couple of laps were really exciting, to which he replied “It’s always exciting with the great group of cars here at Eagle. That was an exciting finish though, and Tyler Jackson had a really good run too. I want to thank everybody for supporting me and being out here tonight. I got the easy start out front and that really helped a lot. But you’ve got to get to the lead and stay there and that’s what we did tonight”, Michael’s sponsors include Hoppe Farms, Complete Ag, East Side Bar and Grill JR Storalls and City Slickers.

Lastly, the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars took to the track for their A Main. The first attempt at a start saw Adam Gullion loop the #91 in turns 1 and 2. The complete restart saw the 45 of Jake Neal out front followed by Mike Boston’s 51, the 18W of Cole Wayman and Bret Klabunde’s 77. Boston passed Neal for the lead on lap 3. Wayman also got past Neal for second on lap 5. Lap 8 saw Andrew Jackson spin the 25A to a halt coming out of turn 4 for another caution. Tyler Drueke took advantage of the restart to put the #12 into fourth place and moved up to 3rd the next time around. Wayman passed Boston for the lead on lap 12 with Drueke following him into second the next lap. Jason Danley got past Neal the following circuit to put the 4X into fourth. Drueke snagged the lead away from Wayman with 9 to go. Danley advanced to third the next circuit. Jack Dover put the 55L into fourth place with 6 laps remaining. Danley moved to second with 4 to go and Dover took over third place the next lap. Drueke held on for the win, Danley was second, third spot went to Dover and Wayman rounded out the top 4.

I told Tyler that he had moved toward the front in a hurry, and he told me “Not fast enough for me! The track was wide and had 2 racing lanes. You just had to pick your way up through the pack. Matt, Dustin and Dad did a really good job tonight. The car drove really straight and seemed to be hooked up so I just had to carry my momentum. Towards the end it got a little dry and dusty coming off of turn 4, and I had trouble getting off of the corner but the track was good. Top, bottom, I used both of them to get the win”. Tyler’s sponsors include Cherney Enterprises LLC, MySalesman, American Trailer Co., Drueke Trucking and Ranch, Jeffries Trucking, Johnson Farms, King Auto Supply, Angel Energy Services and Zoz Farms.

Remember that there are just 2 more nights of regular season racing left this season, 5 classes are still in heated points battles with 3 of them having 15 or less points between the top 2 spots you won’t want to miss a single night!

Next week is Back To School Bash, presented by Pepsi, Empire Fence and the Nebraska Lottery.

After the races are concluded there will be the fan favorite Bus Demolition Derby.

Front gates open at 5:15 with adult front gate admission is $15, youths 6-12 are just $5 and children 5 and under are free. All 5 classes will be competing including the Twin Rivers Sprint Cars, Nebraska Lottery Modifieds, Avid Realty SportMods, A1 Iron Stock Cars & Valentino’s Hobby Stocks. Track, State, Regional & National Points for all classes.
