Dillon Richards, Cameron Thompson, Cole Wayman, Shayle Bade and Neil Pella all celebrate big wins at Eagle Raceway on May 9th!

By Greg Soukup

Mom’s Rule Night, presented by Empire Fence, AM Contracting and Rotella’s was held at Eagle Raceway Saturday saw a gorgeous afternoon with 139 cars filling the pits.

There was one serious accident in the AM Contracting IMCA Stock Cars. The first lap saw Jeff Watts’ 66 do a barrel roll in the air after multiple cars got together coming out of turn 4. Jeff was not hurt, but he was towed back to the pits.

The first A Main was for the AM Contracting IMCA Stock Cars. Atley Johnson led lap 1 in the 10A, followed by Tyler Jackson in the 13T, Mike Scheinost’s 51 and the 3 of Dan Jackson. Casey Woken passed Jackson on lap 2 to put the 35W into fourth place. Woken moved up to third the next circuit. Tommy Etherton moved past Scheinost on lap 5 to grab fourth in the 24T but the caution flag flew when Benji Legg’s #84 came to a halt in turns 1 and 2 after contact with the 18 of Terry Richards. That brought out the Eastep Wheels Choose cone. The top 4 for the Delaware restart were Johnson, Jackson, Scheinost and Woken. The restart saw Woken slow to a stop at the top of 1 and 2 with a flat left front tire. RJ Macku hit the wall in turn 4 also that lap, suffering a flat right front and flat right rear tire. The Choose Cone restart top 4 were Johnson, Dillon Richards in the 24R, Scheinost and Jackson. Dillon Richards moved to second on the restart and advanced to first on lap 7 as Mason Richards passed Jackson, putting his 18M into fourth. Mason Richards got past Scheinost the next time around to take over the third position. 1 more lap was in the books when Nate Thompson put the 3T into fourth place. 9 laps remained when Johnson spun in turns 3 and 4. Thompson passed Jackson with 7 circuits left. Etherton moved back into the fourth spot with 4 laps left for the final change in the top 4. Dillon Richards won, Mason Richards was second, Thompson came home third with Etherton fourth.

This was Dillon Richards’ first Stock Car win at Eagle Raceway. He left without being interviewed.

The Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods were next onto the track. There was a huge mess in turns 1 and 2 when James Hines’ 31R and the 77 of Shawn Davis got
together, collecting the 44D of Derek Hall, Noah Williams in the 27W and the 73Z of Zane Woodman. Lap 1 saw Gary Saathoff’s 96 in the lead with the 17 of Mary Hahn second, Matt Andrews third in the 22 and fourth place going to 88F of Rich Flock. Lap 2 saw the 66 of Trevor Noonan spin at the bottom of turns 3 and 4 for a caution. The Choose Cone was placed on the front stretch with the top 4 being Hahn, Saathoff, Andrews and Flock. Hall passed Flock for fourth on the restart. 2 laps later Flock spun in turn 2. The Choose Cone restart saw Saathoff, Andrews, Hahn and Flock your top 4. Hall moved back into fourth on the restart. Flock spun at the bottom of turn 2 two laps later. This time the Choose Cone restart top 4 were Saathoff, Andrews, Hahn and the 7 of Lee Horky. Hall retook fourth on the restart but lost the position back to Horkey the next time around. The following lap saw Cole Wayman’s V18W pass Horky for fourth. Wayman jumped all the way up to second with 7 to go with Hahn also passing Andrews for third. Just 4 laps were left when Wayman passed Saathoff for the lead. The 31S of Jacob Swanson took over the fourth position the following lap. Your final top 4 were Wayman, Saathoff, Hahn and Swanson.

Cole is the defending class champion and this was his first regular season victory but his second win this year. The first came on the Saturday portion of the Icebreaker Challenge. Cole had to come all the way from 16th on the starting grid for the win. He said “It was a good night. The car was good and the track was pretty racey. You could run the top or the bottom. I went wherever I had to go to try and get to the front. After that whole deal on the first lap that helped me a little bit. I started pretty deep in the field so I just tried to keep my nose clean and stay clear of the wrecks.” Cole’s sponsors include Vermeer High Plains, Timmy J Fox at Fox Automotive, Mom & Dad, Slider chassis by Leiting Motorsports, Dan Jackson Racing, Noonan Industries LLC and Baker Boys Racing.

The S&L Trenching IMCA Modified A Feature was next. Cameron Thompson led the first circuit in his #2T with his father Nate Thompson second in the 3T, the 75 of Kyle Olberding third and Adam Vrbka fourth in the 7V. Mike Densberger passed Vrbka for fourth in his #81. Densberger moved up to third on lap 10. 8 circuits were left when Adam Wasserman moved past Nate Thompson to put the 41 into fourth. The top 4 stayed the same with Cameron Thompson winning by 7 ¼ seconds. Nate Thompson was second, Densberger finished third with Wasserman fourth. Since the race went green/white/checkered all drivers in the A will receive free pit passes next weekend.

The victory was Cameron’s first. When asked what he felt, running second to his son Nate Thompson said “That was awesome! I’m so glad that he won. I’m just very happy. That’s his first win, so hopefully there’s more to come.” Cameron stated.“

When I interviewed the 17 year-old Cameron, my first question was about his racing background. He said “I started racing go-karts in 2019 right before COVID hit. Then in 2023 I got the opportunity to race a stock car for a buddy of mine. I raced a whopping 4 nights before I junked that car. Since 2024 I’ve been racing an IMCA Modified and added the IMCA Racesaver Sprint in 2025 and have been doing both since.” I then asked about the race, to which he replied “I started on the outside pole. I rolled up to staging early because I wanted to watch the sportmods to see where they were running. My Dad wasn’t in his car yet. I drove up to him and told him ‘Just so you know, I’m going to jump the start’ since he was inside pole. I didn’t jump the start, but I still got the lead by the time we got to the flag stand. I watched the replay of Adam Wasserman’s win from last week to see where he was running. He would drive in the middle. Eagle has some ruffles coming out of the corner, so I would drive in through the slick and aim for those things. My car has a lot of traction right now and it’s really good for the way that the track is.” We moved on to how he felt after getting his first win. He related “Everyone always says that your first win doesn’t feel real and I can say that it does not feel real. The best way that I can describe it is like this. After a decent night at the track we come home and maybe some changes to the car, but I feel that after winning, I’m relaxed. It’s relaxing because you know that the car is good. Just do the maintenance and try again next week.” I then asked when he was going to win in the Racesaver Sprint. He said “Oh, I thought we had a couple last year but Eagle is a tough place to win at. You’ve got Drueke, Snyder, Gullion, Danley and more. Anyone can win out there any week. Drueke makes it hard, winning several times a year. It’s just a hard place to win at, I’ll tell you that. I want to send out thanks first of all to my Dad. He helps a lot! If I wreck, he helps me. I’m young, and he has a lot of experience. If I don’t know how to do something, he’s right there to help me. Same thing with Dillon Thurman. He’s our main pit guy and has been helping my Dad for years. Any time I can’t get something right, he’s there to help. There’s Beau Riffel, who hurt his hand. He races, but has been helping me the past couple of weeks because last year’s pit guy is racing Late Models so I’m out of a pit guy. My girlfriend is the best!! She comes and helps me in the garage and on race day. There’s Roger and Paige Hadan; they’re the main sprint car people.” Cameron’s sponsors include Assassin Speed Works , Tyler and Travis Collins at Stumpy’s Custom Creations, T3 Fabrication, Ashley Nicole a Realtor at NP Dodge Real Estate, Auto TransMatic, Bag & Tag Towing and Recovery LLC, Nebraska Septic, Smooth Finish Drywall Company, Tadd Newill with Newill Construction, Ryan Tyler Wheeler with Wheeler Land Werx and Hurst trucking.

Next out onto the high-banked 1/3 mile was the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Josh Riggins was first back to the flag stand in the 14J with Shayle Bade second in the 03, Daniel Nekolite’s 22D third and fourth place going to the 14T of Tyler Hendrickson. Bade passed Riggins for the lead on lap 6. Tyler Drueke put the #12 into fourth the next time around and moved up to third on lap 10 before passing Hendrickson for third on lap 11. Drueke continued to move forward, taking the second spot away from Riggins two laps later. Justin Bolte’s 17 scraped the turn 3 wall with 8 to go and ended up going end over end into turn 4. He wasn’t seriously injured. The Choose Cone lineup saw Bade, Drueke, Hendrickson and Adam Gullion’s 91 your top 4. Just 4 laps were left when Trefer Waller caught the wall in turn 3 at nearly the same spot as Bolte. He ended up flipping and coming to rest on his right side. He was not seriously injured. Adam Gullion got past Hendrickson for fourth 1 lap after the restart. Gullion passed Riggins on the final lap for third. Drueke failed to stick the slide job going into turn 4. Bade, Drueke, Gullion and Riggins were your top 4.

Shayle said “We were fastest in our hot lap session, won our heat and the feature so that was a win all around! The car felt great, but obviously I have to give the credit for that to my crew. My husband works really late so he doesn’t have time to do maintenance. Also, we have a 3 month-old baby and a 4 year-old son o it’s hard for me to get out there too so I owe a whole lot to Stu Snyder. He’s helped us out a lot of times. In the A Main I didn’t know if we were going to get it or not. We obviously started on the high side, but Roger went out before the race and tilled one line along the top and added some water making it super soupy but then we went out and packed it in for awhile. The track ended up beautiful. I personally like the high side. It wasn’t super on the wall so it turned out perfect. My car felt great up there and it couldn’t have turned out better. One that one restart I wasn’t aware that we were still doing Delaware restarts so I was out front and the rest of the field had to choose. The yellow light was still on when we were coming around, do I kept looking to my inside to see who was there. Then, all of a sudden it was the green flag! I’m just glad that Roger realized that the yellow lights were still on and recalled the restart. This couldn’t have been a better Mothers Day.” I asked her if she heard Tyler Drueke right behind her towards the end and she stated “I did! I was pooping my pants but I decided to hold it together and hope that it was a high track all of the way around the rest of the race. So if they were going to pass me it was going to have to beat me by trying to slide me. I knew that if I stayed up there in the moisture and didn’t miss my line I could hold them off. I never saw anyone beside me so I just had to hold my line. I’ll have to watch the replay.”

Shayle’s sponsors include Home Shield, Hippo Equipment, Mammoth Station, Pyrogasm Fireworks and Restore A Muscle Car.

The finale was for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Neil Pella led lap 1 in the 3N with Michael Wade second in the 12, Dave Carter’s 2C third and 53T of Trenton Dowty fourth. Dowty advanced to third on lap 4 and moved up to second the next lap. Dan Markham took over fourth on lap 5 and kept advancing, moving up to third the next time around. Eric Chab put the #11 into fourth place with 9 laps remaining. Markham passed Dowty for second with 7 to go. The yellow lights were lit in the corners when Kenny Roberts’ 60 and the 17 of James Doiel stopped at the top of turn 2 to set up a green/white/checkered duel. There were no changes in the top 4 with Pella first, Markham second, Dowty third and Wade fourth.

This was Neil’s second victory in a row and I kidded him saying “Now you’re just getting greedy!” to which he replied “Just a little bit I guess. I don’t know how I drew #2 tonight, but I did. It was a fun time. Michael Wade and I are good friends; he started #1 and I started #2. I knew that it was going to be a fun battle after that. The track had a lot of character to it tonight. When Roger watered the top side there were a couple of corners where if you hit them wrong it was actually greasy. So, I had to figure out how to get through them and after that it was just hammer down and go for it! We have a new sponsor that came onboard this week; Blush Bridal.” Neill’s other sponsors include Salberg Machine, Fosler Family Trucking, The Beverage Connection, Stone Cold Restorations, Gilland Electric, Gilland Builders, JTO Logistics, FiveTwo Customs, HP Automotive, Laughlin Automotive, Schowenweis Trucking, Premier Mower and Power Supplies, Skytop Towers and BBR Racing Suspensions.
