Eagle Raceway
Snyder, Andersen, Williams, Pella & Wasserman race to Victory at Eagle's Jr. Fan Club Night
Story by Greg Soukup
After a bout of liquid sunshine forced the cancellation of what was to be the season opener at Eagle Raceway last Saturday this Saturday was a beautiful spring day for Junior Fan Club Night, sponsored by Hippo Equipment, Avid Realty and Pepsi of Lincoln.
The large crowd weren’t the only ones ready for action on the high banks of One Badass Racetrack as 158 teams filled the pits, anxious to test their mettle during 18 heats, 3 C Features, 5 B Features and 5 A Features.
At intermission, the front stretch was flooded with young fans as the competed in the Candy Grab, trying to get their share of the 300 pounds of candy there provided by Sam’s Club.
There was one serious incident in the preliminary action, coming in the B Main for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars. Josh Riggins got too high going into turn one in the 14J, backed into and over the wall, flipped and ended up on his side. He was not seriously injured but his night was through.
The first A Main was for the AM Contracting IMCA Stock Cars. Mason Richards in the 18M, the 19 of Kyle Vanover, Nate Thompson’s 3T and the 8C of Chad Andersen were the first four back to the flag stand. Lap 2 saw Thompson and Andersen jump up to first and second places, Vanover got past Richards for third the next time around. On lap 6 Adam Vrbka passed Richards to put the 7V into fourth, but Richards regained the position the next time around. Thompson and Andersen continued to battle door handle to door handle until Thompson went too high in turn 4, allowing Andersen to grab first place. With 7 circuits remaining Dillon Richards got past Vrbka, putting the 24R into fourth. Vanover moved under and past Thompson for second the next time around. Mason Richards regained the fourth position 2 laps later. The top 4 remained unchanged to the checkered flag with Andersen, Vanover, Thompson and Mason Richards coming home in that order. Since there were no cautions, every driver in the feature will get a free pit pass next week.
Chad is your defending track champion in the AM Contracting IMCA Stock Cars and took home not just the winner’s share of the purse but also the $200 Meininger Fire Protection third row fire challenge which is new this year. The challenge is won by whichever driver can win the A Feature in either the AM Contracting IMCA Stock Cars or Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks.
He said “That was nice. I wasn’t sure of the track but it was perfect. It was a little slicker than I like but man, this stock car loves it. My modified not so much, but we moved forward so it’s all good. I was pleased with how we did, starting sixth with all of those heavy hitters out front. Just get out front, hit my marks, stay patient and let the car do the work. I had a hell of a battle with Nate and that was one of the most fun races I’ve had in a while. Door to door what seemed like the whole race. I’m going to have to watch the replay to see just how great it was. The track was great. Hats off to the track prep crew, the fire and safety guys and everyone here that lets us come out every Saturday and do what we love to do. I couldn’t do it without Ray who works on the car all week and at the track. I wish my kids were here, but they all have baseball. One is in Tulsa and my fiancée is down there with the 2 littles, so a big shout out to her for all she does so that I can do what I love to do. It’s a good way to start the year off and hopefully I can keep it rolling.”
Next up were the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. Noah Williams led lap 1 in his 27W with the 31S of Jacob Swanson, Derek Hall’s 44D and the V18W of Cole Wayman hot on his rear bumper. Wayman moved up to third on lap 3 and also passed Hall to snag second place the following circuit. McLain Reed got past Hall for fourth on lap 6, then passed Swanson for third on lap 8. Aiden Floyd got past Swanson with 6 laps left to put the 7F into fourth. Your top 4 stayed the same to the finish with Williams winning, Wayman second, Reed third and Floyd fourth. This race also went green/white/checkered so the drivers will receive complimentary pit passes next week.
Noah stated, “I didn’t know if you were still doing interviews or not.” To which I replied, “It’s been a year since you won” and he said “It’s been over a year; a long while since I’ve been in victory lane, so this feels really good! We came in second a lot. It was fun tonight. The car felt really, really good and the track was fun. It was racy top and bottom so I ran the top in 1 and 2 and the bottom in 3 and 4 and that worked well for a while. I started second, got the lead and tried to run away with it as best as I could. We stayed green which I was hoping for the whole time and we pulled it off.” Noah’s sponsors include Exclusive Concrete Coatings, - Amberly Dental, No Limits Tree Service LLC, Siemers Body Shop, Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 129, Leiting Motorsports, Slider Chassis, Precision Race Products Engines & Dyno, Mom & Dad and Luke Williams.
Your Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds then took to the track for their A Main. The first lap went to the 41 of Adam Wasserman with Tyler Harr’s 21T, the #1 of Josh Most and Jaxon Saathoff in the 96 rounding out your top 4. Most jumped up to the lead on lap 2 with Saathoff advancing to third. Chad Andersen passed Harr on lap 3 to put the 8C into fourth. 9 Laps were in the books when Jordan Grabouski passed Andersen to take over fourth place in the 12 as Saathoff moved up to second. Most regained the position the next time around. Wasserman managed to stretch his lead to a full straightaway with 9 to go. 2 laps later Saathoff again took over the second spot from Most. Grabouski moved around Most with 6 laps left to move up to third and passed Saathoff for second the following circuit. Andersen managed to get past Most in the final 2 corners for fourth place. The top 4 were Wasserman, Grabouski, Saathoff and Andersen. This was the third straight A that went caution free, allowing all drivers in it to get their pit pass free next week. The results are not final as in post-race tech it was determined with a new Rope-A-Doper Tech tool that 2 of the top 4 driver's tires should have samples sent in to be tested to see if they conform to benchmark in a professional lab.
This was Adam’s first ever Modified win after moving up from the hobby stock class briefly last season. He told me “This was fun! I moved up to a modified last year and kind of got our feet underneath us. This year we’re finding more speed so it’s fun running up front. The track was technical tonight, but I like a technical track because it brings the driver and the setup back into the equation. Everybody can hold the pedal down to the wood and turn, but a technical racetrack makes it fun for a guy.” Adam’s sponsors include BA Wasserman Trucking, Hamilton Construction, Black Diamond Exteriors, Miller Seed, Schmidt Machine, J&N Outdoors, Kreiner’s Corner Bar and Grill, Jet Racing and Midwest Trailer Depot.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks came out onto the track next for their final race of the night. There was a huge 5-car pile-up in turns 3 and 4 at the initial attempt at a start when Ryan Roschewski’s 2R tapped the right rear of the 6 of Dan Markham and spun collecting Dave Carter’s 2C, the 24T of Tylan Lambertus, Brayden Hurley’s 38 and Tyler Ramsey’s 72T. Only Lambertus and Hurley were able to return to the racing. On the restart Lambertus spun in turns 1 and 2 for another caution. When a lap was finally official, Markham was out front with Neil Pella’s 3N second, Trenton Dowty third in the 53T and the 76H of Jason Hansen in fourth. Hurley passed Hansen for fourth on lap 2. Lap 4 saw Pella take the lead from Markham as Colin Hein put the 19H into fourth. Hurley moved up to second on lap 7 with Hein following him into third as Markham fell back to fourth. Hein advanced to second place with 9 circuits remaining but lost the spot back to Hurley 3 laps later when Hein got above the cushion in turn 4. Dowty regained the fourth position the next lap and Markam moved up to third when Hein suffered a flat right rear tire. A caution was called again the next time around for debris in turn 3. The last change in the top 4 came with 3 to go when Eric Chab passed Dowty to put his #11 into fourth place. Your top 4 were Pella, Hurley, Markam and Chab.
Neil was all smiles and said “We looked at lineups and it had me starting in 11th but before we went out for the feature I asked Lee who helps Cash Beckman to check and be sure so I knew who to start behind. It showed me starting in fourth so that made life a little bit easier. The track looked like a sheet of glass out there and it made it a little bit finicky to get around the track well, but I figured it out and held my own. I didn’t over drive it but I didn’t under drive it either so it worked out for me in the long run.” Neil’s sponsors include Salberg Machine, Fosler Family Trucking, The Beverage Connection, Stone Cold Restorations, Gilland Electric, Gilland Builders, JTO Logistics, FiveTwo Customs, HP Automotive, Laughlin Automotive, Schowenweis Trucking, Premier Mower and Power Supplies, Skytop Towers and BBR Racing Suspensions.
Stu Snyder put the #5 in first on lap 1 of the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature with Brandon Horton’s 1B, the 63 of Jack Thomas and Cameron Thompson’s 2T close behind. Adam Gullion passed Thompson on lap 2 to put the 91 into fourth. Thomas got under and past Horton on lap 11 to move up to second. Lap 12 saw Cole Wayman’s 18W suffer a flat right rear tire and come to a halt just before the track exit. He would get the tire changed and rejoin the field. That brought out the Eastep Wheels Choose Cone, setting the top 4 as follows, Snyder, Thomas, Horton and Gullion and for the Delaware restart. Trevor Grossenbacher jumped from fifth place up to third on the restart, moving Thomas back to fourth with Horton retaking second place. Gullion made a slide job stick with 2 to go, advancing past Thomas for fourth. The top four remained unchanged with ‘Superman’ Stu Snyder winning, Horton second, Grossenbacher third and Gullion fourth.
This made2m in a row for Snyder, who won the Saturday night portion of the Icebreaker Challenge, I kidded Stu, saying “I would say nice run, but you started out front” to which he replied “It always helps to start out front. You just have to run like a chicken with your head cut off and make sure that nobody gets back around you. You have to be consistent to stay up front. You have to have speed pretty much all night long. We had to change gears for the feature. As soon as the rubber showed up I knew that I had to just hit my marks, don’t get too tight and dispose of the lapped cars as quick as I could. I have to send a huge shout out to Leiting Motorsports for their help. Also, MRSNY Automotive came on board with us this year as did Steven Alcorn out of Oklahoma. We’re going to put his name on all of our cars, including the kids’ cars. Thanks to all of my sponsors we’ll just keep clicking away and hopefully win every other week if not every week.” Stu’s other sponsors include KRL Racing, SLS Motorsports, Stephenson’s Truck and RV Repair, Mr. Yards and More, Tailored Computers, Swirlfire Apparel, Simpson Racing Products, Harris Decals, Bully Brands, BR Motorsports and Speedway Engines.
Next week Moms Rule Night at Eagle Raceway, presented by Empire Fence, AM Contracting and Rotella’s. Grandstands open at 5:15 with hot laps at 5:45.
Adult front gate admission is $15, youths 6-12 are just $5 and children 5 and under are free.
