Corey Day races to Victory at "1 Badass Racetrack" on a Tuesday

By Greg Soukup
Tuesday saw the first visit to Eagle Raceway by the Interstate Batteries High Limit Racing Series for the Spring Jackpot, presented by Speedway Motors. As always, there was a very large crowd in the stands to watch the Roto-Rooter Midweek Series hit the high banks of the newly renovated surface of One Badass Racetrack in their fire breathing, ground pounding 410 Sprint Cars.
A total of 39 teams hauled into the fastest 1/3-mile dirt track in the world. Kicking off the racing action was the Capitol Renegade Qualifying. Corey Day set fast time with a lap of 11.375 seconds. Heat races were next with victories going to Ryan Timms in the #10, the 41 of Carson Macedo, Brad Sweet; in the 94 and the 24 of Rico Abreu. In the 7 lap dash, the win and pole position for the A Feature went to the #87 of Aaron Reutzel.
The preliminary action saw 4 serious incidents. In hot laps, Danny Samms III bounced going into turns 1 and 2 and ended up barrel rolling. The other 3 all came in the 19 car B Feature. Jason Martin’s 36 got too high in turns 1 and 2 on lap 3 and went up and over. Then, on lap 4 Cameron Martin’s #4 ended up catching the wall in turn 3 and ended going up and over the wall in turns 3 and 4. As the red flag flew and the field slowed quickly to a stop, Kaleb Johnson in the 22K caught the left rear wheel of Danny Samm’s car and ended up flipping on the front stretch. None of the drivers were seriously injured, but their nights were over.
The Main Event, the 30 lap, $12,000 to win A Feature saw Carson Macedo lead the first circuit in the 41 with the 94 of Brad Sweet second, Aaron Reutzel’s 87 third and Kerry Madsen in the 55 fourth. Sweet snagged the lead on lap 2 as Corey Day passed Madsen to put the 14 into fourth. Lap 5 saw the yellow lights in the corners come on when Gage Pulkrabek’s G5 spun and Tanner Holmes’ 13 spun to avoid Pulkrabek as both stopped in turns 3 & 4. Day moved up to fourth on the restart as Ryan Timms took over fourth in the #10. Chris Martin’s 44 spun to a halt at the top of turn 4 on lap 7 to slow the action once again. Macedo made contact with the wall in turn 2 on the restart, falling back to sixth with Day moving up to second, Timms to third and Rico Abreu’s 24 advanced to fourth. Logan Seavey’s 87X slowed dramatically the next time around and the caution flag was displayed. Day passed Sweet for the lead on the restart as Tanner Thorson jumped all the way up to third in the 88, moving Timms back to fourth. Macedo rejoined the top 4 the next time around as he regained the fourth spot. Lap 13 saw both Holmes’ 13 and the 9 of Daison Pursley flip in turn 1 when Joe Meyers Jr.’s 19JR made contact with Pursley, sending him sliding up into Holmes. One lap after the restart Day got under and past Sweet for the lead. Kerry Madsen looped the 55 in turn 3 with a flat left front tire after contact with another racer on lap 15. Abreu passed Thorson on lap 18 for fourth. Garet Williamson’s 23 flipped in turns 1 and 2 on lap 20. Madsen again spun on the restart after making contact with Sye Lynch’s 42 after Lynch and Chase Randall’s 9R got together in front of Madsen. Thorson jumped all of the way up to third on lap 21. Pulkrabek spun to the infield the next lap, and a caution resulted. Reutzel spun to a stop at the top of turn 4 after contact with the right rear of Hank Davis’ 17GP, collecting Chris Martin who flipped into Reutzel while trying to avoid him with 1 to go and the yellow lights were lit in the corners again. The green/white/ checkered finish saw Day hold on for the win and head to Whiskey Meyers victory lane. Sweet, Thorson and Macedo rounded out the top 4.
I congratulated Corey on a great run and he said “Thanks! It was a good run. I have to thank my crew guys for a really cool car tonight. It took me like 16 laps to get out front but we had a really good car and that made my job easy. This is a really cool track and I love coming here. Run high in 1 and 2 with lots of options in 3 and 4.” Corey’s sponsors include Trex, Weyerhauser, Four CCCC’s Construction, Cencal Services, Interstate Oil, Meyers Construction, FK Rod Ends ND Maxwell Lubricants.
You can catch Corey this Sunday running the Hendricks Motorsports #17 at the Jack Link’s 500 at Talledega Motor Speedway.
The Interstate Batteries High Limit Series will be back at Eagle Raceway on June 9th for the fourth annual $50,000 to win FK Rod Ends Eagle Nationals. Be sure to get your tickets early because it’s most likely be a near capacity crowd!!!
