Grabouski, Wayman, Snyder, Steiner, & Laney are victorious at the IceBreaker Challenge Finale

Jordan Grabouski, Cole Wayman, Stuart Snyder, Zander Steiner, & Cody Laney are victorious at the IceBreaker Challenge Finale.

Story by Greg Soukup

It was chilly again Saturday night at Eagle Raceway as AutoTransmatic presented night 2m of the 2026 Icebreaker Challenge. Thankfully, the wind had died down and the action on the track was just as hot as Friday night’s was.
160 teams were in the pits, raring to go and ready to challenge the new racing surface of the high-banked 1/3 mile. I personally was amazed by how many teams showed up. There were 16 cars in the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car C Feature; and I haven’t seen that (outside of the Racesaver Nationals) since back in the 70’s and 80’s!!!

There was just one serious incident in the preliminary racing action, coming in the C Feature for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Cameron Thompson’s 2T wheel-hopped the right rear tire of John Klabunde’s 77X coming out of turn 3 and went for a wild ride ending up on all 4 tires against the turns 3 and 4 wall. Thankfully, he was not seriously injured but his mount was badly damaged in the barrel rolls.

Your first A Feature was for the AM Contracting Stock Cars. The first four back to the flag stand were the 15 of Jacob Slough, Kyle Vanover in the 19, Jordan Grabouski’s 30 and Dillon Richards in the 24R. Grabouski moved up to second on lap 2 and took over the top spot on lap 3. Lap 4 saw Richards get under and past Vanover for third. Beckman spun out in turn 2 on lap 5 for a caution. The Choose Cone restart top 4 were Grabouski, Slough, Richards and Vanover. Richards took advantage of the restart to advance to second place with Vanover also passing Slough to take over the third spot as Mike Lineberry put the 72 into fourth. Benji Legg cracked the top 4 on lap 7, passing Lineberry to put the 84 in fourth while Vanover advanced to second place. 9 to go saw Legg pass Richards to take over the third position with Chad Andersen putting the 8C into fourth the next time around. Casey Woken looped the 35JW in turn 2 with 6 circuits remaining, coming to a halt at the bottom of the track and bringing out the yellow flag. The Choose Cone had Grabouski out front of the Delaware restart with Vanover, Andersen and Legg right behind him. Legg regained the third spot on the restart. Legg got loose coming out of turn 4 with 5 laps left, allowing Andersen and Slough to both pass him for third and fourth. Slough got past Andersen the next time around when Andersen suffered a flat right rear tire. That also allowed Richards to move back into fourth. Grabouski came home first by nearly a straightaway over Vanover with Slough third and Richards fourth.

He said “Starting up front helps, but the crew gave me another fantastic race car again tonight. The track is really coming around nicely. It was still a little technical, but I can’t wait to come back again and see how great it will become. Thanks to my crew and all of my sponsors; they make it possible for me to do what I love.” Jordan’s sponsors include Brand X Race Cars, Stone Oilfield Service, Speedway Racing Engines, Twin Rivers, Wehr’s Machine, Sybesma, CPD Racing Shocks, Heartland VP, Hergott Farms and Friesen Performance.

Next up was the finale for the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. Mary Hahn led lap 1 in her #17 followed by the 76 of Lance Borgman, Noah Williams’ 27W and the 131 of Cash Woodward. Williams moved up to second on lap 3 while Cole Wayman vaulted the V18W into fourth after starting in ninth. Wayman got past Williams for second the next time around, Caleb Woodard in the 131 passed Borgman into fourth the following lap. Nick Morris spun the 111H out in turn 2 with 9 to go and the yellow lights were lit in the corners. The restart saw the top 4 remain unchanged. Wayman got past Hahn on the restart. Brayton Carter advanced the 01 into fourth with 8 circuits remaining as Williams moved past Hahn for second place but lost the position back to her the following lap and regained it the next time around. Wayman won by a straightaway with Williams second, Hahn third and Carter fourth.

I asked Cole that since he was racing not only the Sportmod, but also a Stock Car and a Sprint if next year he would be adding a Hobby Stock or a full Modified, to which he replied “I would run all 5 classes if I had the chance to! Just kidding. We didn’t run the stock car tonight, and racing 3 classes is really tough. It’s hard enough just running the sportmod and sprint. I had a great car tonight and jumped up front really early. Mary had a great car too and is such a good racer that it was hard to get past her. Once I got the lead I just tried to stay smooth and hit my marks. Roger is doing a great job of getting the track worked in and that made it easier for me to be fast.” Cole’s sponsors include Vermeer High Plains,Fox automotive Timmy J Fox at Fox Automotive, Mom & Dad, Slider chassis by Leiting Motorsports, Dan Jackson Racing, Noonan Industries LLC and Baker Boys Racing.

Lap 1 of the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car main event was led by the 5S of Stu Snyder with Shayle Bade’s 03, Lee Goos in the 17X and the 76 of Jay Russell hot on his push bumper. Lap 2 Tyler Drueke passed Russell on lap 3 to move the 12 into fourth. Billy Alley’s 11 made contact with the 18W of Cole Wayman on the back stretch on lap 5, resulting in Wayman spinning with a flat left rear tire. The Choose Cone had Bade, Snyder, Drueke and Goos your top 4 for the restart. Goos got too high in turns 1 and 2 on lap 9, making contact with the wall and allowing Joey Danley to put the 14 into the fourth spot. Drueke moved under and around Bade for second on lap 12. There were 7 laps left when Danley passed Bade for the third spot. Goos made it past Bade on the final lap to make your top 4 Snyder, Drueke, Danley and Goos.

“I was unsure with the new dirt on the track and with everything else Roger had done over the winter, but after hot laps I knew it was fine and it was right back in our wheelhouse. That’s how I like to get around that place. It was a little rough in a couple of places but it was really, really good. Track wise, it played in our favor. I knew that having a front row car, I loved the redraw. You still have to put yourself in that position, take care of yourself in the early racing. You have to put yourself in that position. I had to set my own pace, take care of myself throughout the race. When I got to lapped traffic, I got past the lapped cars as quickly as I could and put them in my rear-view mirror as they say. I ran the hardest 25 laps that I’ve run. It’s tough when you start out front because you’re not sure of the pace, where the other drivers are running or if someone is catching you. We looked at the lap times afterwards and we were really good in clean air. I guess I made the right maneuvers in lapped traffic so I could keep up my pace. We busted our butts over the winter. Rick decided to switch over to a Maxim Chassis right at the time of the Nationals. We put in the work and built 2 of them. We’re actually heading over to Stewart, Iowa right now with a brand-new car with a 360 in it. The other car with the Racesaver engine let us pick up a win down in Cameron, Missouri earlier. We’re going to see where this season takes us because you know as well as I do that you can go from a hero to a zero in about 8 laps. We’ll just keep digging, put in the hours in the shop and hopefully keep the 5S car out front all season.” Stu’s sponsors include KRL Racing, SLS Motorsports, Stephenson’s Truck and RV Repair, Mr. Yards and More, Tailored Computers, Swirlfire Apparel, Simpson Racing Products, Harris Decals, Bully Brands, BR Motorsports and Speedway Engines.

Kaden Murray in the 9K led the first circuit of the Sport Compact A Feature with Tobey VanLaningham second in the 52, Zander Steiner’s 5 third and the 91K of Eli Kalambokidis fourth. Konner Moore took over the fourth spot in the 25K on lap 2. The next lap saw Jamie Hohenafield lose the right front tire from his #25H and stop on the front stretch, causing a caution. The restart top 4 were Murray, VanLaningham, Steiner and Moore. Steiner got past VanLaningham on the restart to move to second. Steiner grabbed the lead from Murray with 9 circuits left and held off the field for the win. Murray, VanLaningham and Moore rounded out the top 4.

“I felt pretty good tonight. A buddy of mine let me run his car this week and I ran it on practice night. He told me, ‘You’re still running it, so go out and do the best you can’ so I said, ‘Sounds good to me!.’ The car was really fast! That was fun. I didn’t expect to be as fast as I was with the new dirt. I mean, it had some character but it was fun.” The car’s sponsors include Larry’s Auto Salvage, Stouder Plumbing, Diamond Design and Graphics, El Porton and Topper’s Construction.

The last race of the evening was for the S&L Trenching IMCA Modifieds. Josh Most put the #1 out front of lap 1 with Jared Eckrich second in the 58, the 26J of Jace Whitt was third and Cody Laney rounded out the top 4 in his 5L. Laney passed Whitt for third on lap 2. Lap 4 saw Laney move around Eckrich on the high side to take over the second spot. Tyler Fudge’s 37 stopped at the top of turns 1 and 2 on lap 6 for a caution. Eckrich and Laney switched positions on the restart. Jaxon Saathoff made a huge jump up to third on the restart in the 96 to put Eckrich back to fourth. Saathoff passed Laney for second the following lap and Jordan Grabouski put the #30 into fourth. Laney regained second the next time around but Saathoff got back by him 1 lap later. Grabouski passed Laney for third with 10 circuits left. Hunter Weber’s 99W stopped at the top of turns 1 and 2 the following lap with damage to the left front. The Choose Cone was placed on the front stretch again, setting up the top 4 of Most, Saathoff, Laney and Grabouski. Laney passed Saathoff for second on the restart and grabbed the lead with just 8 laps to go. Shawn Harker passed Grabouski 2 laps later, putting the 40 into fourth but Grabouski got the spot back the next lap. Laney held on for the victory with Most second, Saathoff third and Grabouski fourth.

Laney hails from Torrence, California and is a former Super Nationals winner. “This is a pretty awesome racetrack. I was a little worried after not being super great in the heat race. I watched the sprint cars and knew that the track was still going to be great for our feature. I didn’t really know what to do, so I kind of went off of my gut. Josh was really, really good but he kind of messed up and I could get to him. I just tried to keep my momentum up on the top. I ran so many laps up there that I knew it was where I had to be. I got pretty lucky being able to stay ahead of Jordan right before that caution. Being able to line up outside was crucial to winning the race. It was just an awesome race! This was my first time at Eagle Raceway. They always told me to come because it was right up my alley. I watched a lot of videos. It was a little cowboy up and it was black from top to bottom and we don’t race that well when it’s like that anymore. When it’s like this, slick with some grip you have to get up on the wheel a little bit and stand on it.” Cody’s sponsors include Mom & Dad, Corey Dripps, Rage Chassis, Eibach, CPD Racing Shocks, Integra Racing Shocks, Pearsons Recycling, Circle 8 Services, Integrity Trucking, Bartels Harley Davidson, Needles Auto Wrecking, Elite Signs, Winning Edge Carburetion, Rookies Sports Bar, Quickcar Racing Products, Wehrs Machine, Speedway Illustrated, Schoenfeld Headers, Keyser Manufacturing, Bulldog Rear Ends, Superior Fuel Cells, Aero Wheels, Empire Income Tax, Dynamic Drivelines, AT21, Drew Janssen, Dave and Stephanie Boles, Dirt Stars Racing Products, Mike Effler, Dirt Defender, Toby K’s Hideaway and PEM Racing Gears & Drivetrain.
