Grabouski, Brunssen, Vanover & Peterson reap victory at Friday's Portion of the Ice Breaker Challenge

Ice Breaker Challenge Day 1 'A' Feature wins went to Jordan Grabouski, Kyle Vanover, Devyn Peterson and Kalyb Brunssen.

By Greg Soukup
What a fantastic way to kick off my 29th year of being associated with Eagle Raceway!!! For most of us this was our first look at the facility’s upgrade which included a new racing surface, widened corners and the brand-new concrete walls surrounding the track.

The Friday portion of the 2026 Icebreaker Challenge, presented by Auto Trans Matic kicked the season under cloudy skies, cool temperatures and a north wind. On the card were the S&L Trenching Modifieds, Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods, AM Contracting IMCA Stock Cars as well as the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. With a total of 153 teams in the pits, everyone knew they were in for some great racing action. 19 heats, 4 C Mains, 4 B Mains and 4 A Features the fans in the stands and the ones at home watching on IMCA TV or Advantage Racing TV got much more than their money’s worth.

On the line as a bonus for the Modified and Sportmod drivers there is a $1000 bonus if they could win both Friday and Saturday’s A Features!

The first A feature was for the AM Contracting Concrete Construction IMCA Stock Cars. Lance Borgman in the 76, Kyle Vanover’s 19, the 18 of Terry Richards and Jordan Grabouski in the 30 were the top 4 after lap 1. Grabouski passed Richards on lap 2 for third. Vanover took the lead on the following lap and Dillon Richards put the 24R into fourth. Lap 5 saw Grabouski move past Borgman for second with Dillon Richards following him into second the next time around. Dillon made slight contact Grabouski going into turn 1 the next time around and Grabouski spun to a halt at the pit entrance. That allowed the 35JW of Casey Woken to move up to fourth. The Delaware restart order after the Choose Cone made its 2026 debut was Vanover, Dillon Richards, Borgman and Terry Richards. Woken passed Borgman for third on lap 9. A caution for debris in turn 4 came out with 10 to go. The Choose Cone was again brought out onto the front stretch making your top 4 Vanover, Woken, Dillon Richards and Terry Richards. A lap after the restart Adam Vrbka passed Terry Richards to put the 7V into fourth. The top 4 remained unchanged until the checkers with Vanover first, Dillon Richards second, Woken third and Vrbka fourth.

He stated “I started second row outside and was able to get to the lead fairly early. Then it was just trying to survive. Roger and Racine do an incredible job here, always making improvements and bringing big things in here. They did a great job with the wind and the new dirt. There was a ton of character in turns 3 and 4 but Roger tried to keep a little moisture in it despite the wind. It’s not fair for him, but he does such a great job making sure that we have a place to race. It’s just a great atmosphere. Kyle’s sponsors include Anden Bruns Construction, Green’s Furnace and Plumbing, Cadillac Chassis by Big Johnson, Mel, Theron Ahlman with Avid Realty, Brandon Johnson at United Rentals, Speedway shocks and engines, Itzens and Elite Signs.

The Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod feature saw the 5D of Devyn Peterson out front of lap 1 followed by Tyler Nerud’s 5T, the V18W of Cole Wayman and McLain Reed’s 44. Adam Armstrong got into turn 3 a little hot on lap 3 and made contact with Nerud, causing them both to come to a halt in turn 4. The Choose Cone restart saw the top 4 Peterson, Wayman, the 01 of Brayton Carter and Willy Kirk in the 86W. Joe Feyen hit the front stretch wall hard coming out of turn 4 on the restart and the yellow flag flew again. Carter got around Wayman for second on the restart as Lee Horky moved past Kirk to put the #7 into fourth. Wayman retook the second spot on the following lap. Carter again passed Wayman for second on lap 8 but lost the position back to him with 8 to go. The next time around Caleb Woodard moved the 131 past Kirk for fourth. 3 laps remained when Woodard advanced to third. A piece of debris coming out of turn 2d lit the yellow lights in the corners setting up a green/white/checkered finish. No changes in the top 4 saw Peterson, Wayman, Woodard and Carter your top 4.

Devyn said “It’s good starting out front, always beneficial. I had to hold off Cole and some other big dogs behind us but it’s good to come out on top. The track was pretty rough with the new dirt but I’ve been here before and it was better. Roger is trying, but this time of year it’s kind of ‘it is what it is’.” Devyn’s sponsors include SpeeDeeMart, Comforttechs, Hope Group LLC, Smart Chicken, Levrack, Krieser Drywall & Insulation, Middle Creek Ranch, Kirby Roth Insurance, Aqua Systems of Nebraska, Earnest Well Drilling Inc., Potter Repair Inc., Roth and Mullet Foundations, Ackerman Rock and Gravel, Briggs Cattle Company, Underdog Design & Drawing, VanderBuilt Race Cars, Dynamic Drivelines, Tire Demon by Love-Tap Fabrication, Eibach, My Race Pass, Wergin's Lawn Service, Super Spray Car Wash, Fee HP, Performance Bodies and Noonan Industries LLC.

Your Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Main’s first lap went to the 2C of Dave Carter with Anthony Davis’ 5D, the 56 of Nate Buck and the 2R of Ryan Roschewski rounding out the top 4. Buck bobbled coming out of turn 4 on lap 2 allowing the 00k of Kaylb Brunssen to move into fourth place. Roschewski passed Davis on lap 4 for second. Roschewski got past Carter for the lead on lap 8. Brunnsen got under and past Davis with 9 circuits remaining to move up to third. Brunnsen continued his move to the front with 7 to go, passing Carter for second. Tyler Lambertus’ 24T came to a halt in turn 4 with 5 to go, bringing out the caution. The Choose Cone Delaware restart order was Roschewski, Brunnsen, Carter and the 53T of Trenton Dowty. Neil Pella put the 3N into fourth position with 5 to go then passed Carter for third the next circuit. Dillon Thompson moved past Carter to put the 11T into fourth with 3 to go. Brunnsen and Pella both went under and past Roschewski when he went high on the final lap to make your top 4 Brunnsen, Pella, Roschewski and Thompson.

Kalyb said “It’s a struggle with this new car that I, my Dad and Steve built last year. It’s a copy of our old car and we’ve been struggling with it but I think we’re on the right track now. The track was rough tonight but I love coming here, especially for the Icebreaker. My Dad won one in 2014 and I’ve been chasing it ever since. I’ll be back every year for sure! The track will take a couple of nights to work in, but we’re here to run laps and put on a show for the fans.” Kaylb’s sponsors include Lee Huedepohl, Siouxland Glass, AWS, Elite Industrial, Simmons Trucking, Marsh Automotive, Tri-State Tint, Landauer Motorsports, Nitro Express, Bubba’s Bucks and 2 Forks Livestock.

The finale for the evening was the A Feature for the S&L Trenching IMCA Modifieds. Out front on the first lap was the #1 of Josh Most with Brandon Verbeek’s 4B second, the 2T of Chevy Hadan third and the 30 of Jordan Grabouski. Grabouski jumped up to second on lap 2. Lap 3 saw the 127 of Drew Janssen pass Hadan fourth and then pass Verbeek for third the next time around. Lap 5 saw Most jump the cushion in turns 1 and 2 and nearly flip before coming to a halt on all 4 tires. The Choose Cone restart had Grabouski, Janssen, Verbeek and Hadan your top 4. Mike Densberger got past Hadan on the restart to put the 81 into fourth place before pulling into the infield the following circuit, allowing Jaxon Saathoff’s 96 to move up to fourth. Cody Laney moved around Saathoff the next lap, putting the 5L into fourth. Saathoff got back past Verbeek the next lap when Verbeek got loose and Laney moved to third. Dustin Andersen passed Saathoff with 13 circuits left to put the 8A into fourth. Just 10 laps were left when Izac Malicoat moved around Andersen to put the 11 into the fourth spot. From there to the finish, it was just a matter of how big Grabouski’s lead would be. He won by a straightaway with Janssen second, Laney third and Malicoat fourth.

I kidded Jordan asking if he didn’t get tired of coming to Eagle Raceway and taking our money. He replied “Not at all!! It’s always fun coming here, it’s just a little colder tonight than usual. The track definitely had a little character. We have a new car and it helps to start up front. I had a good car and had to make good choices and good decisions. I can’t complain.” Jordan’s sponsors include Brand X Race Cars, Stone Oilfield Service, Speedway Racing Engines, Twin Rivers, Wehr’s Machine, Sybesma, CPD Racing Shocks, Heartland VP, Hergott Farms and Friesen Performance.
