Gullion, Pella, Vanover, Wayman & Harker pick up feature wins at Eagle Raceway's Championship Night presented by Nebraska Septic, Avid Realty, Empire
By Greg Soukup
CURTAIN CALL! Championship Night, presented by Empire Fence, Avid Realty, Nebraska Septic and S&L Trenching was held this past Saturday under beautiful blue skies with almost fall like temperatures greeting the large crowd that filled the grandstands at Eagle Raceway.
With the points championships in the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars, the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds and the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars still up for grabs, you knew it would be an evening filled with furious competition on the high banked 1/3 mile of America’s Home Track. Besides the top spots, many chances were there to move up a position or two in the rankings.
As is usual the week before the IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car Nationals, we had drivers come from near and far to get a quick refresher on how to run the world’s fastest 1/3 mile. Usually, they are competing in the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprints, but this week we had a visitor that hails from Healesville, Victoria Australia show up to race his A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car!! A total of 139 cars packed the pits.
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary action.
Jeremy Down put the #6 out front on lap 1 of the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car Feature followed by the 44X of Cash Beckman, Matt Boucher’s 5B and the 71JJ of Jerod Bussen. Boucher moved up to second on lap 2 as John Meyer passed Bussen to put the 29 into fourth. Benji Legg moved past Meyer on lap 4 in the #84 for fourth place. His place in the top 4 came to a quick halt the next lap as Kyle Vanover’s #19 passed Legg. Vanover maintained his march to the front, passing Beckman the next lap to grab third. Dan Jackson took over the fourth spot on lap 6 in the #30. Lap 10 saw Chad Andersen’s engine and chance for the points championship in the 8C go up in smoke. He pulled to the infield as he left a long trail of fluid through turns 1 and 2, resulting in a caution. The Eastepwheels.com Choose Cone was placed on the front stretch. The restart lineup was Down, Boucher, Vanover and Jackson. Bussen spun in turn 4 with 10 to go, bringing out the yellow flag and the Choose Cone. The restart lineup was the same as before. Vanover took advantage of the restart to pass Boucher for second. Mason Richard’s night ended the next lap when he stopped on the front stretch. His #18M was towed to the pits, missing the right front wheel and tire. This resulted in a tie for the points championship between he and Andersen. Andersen gets the victory in the points race for having more wins than Richards. One lap after the single file restart Vanover took over the lead from Down. Jackson looped his racer in turns 1 and 2 the next time around for yet another caution, moving Beckman back to fourth. Legg took fourth place back from Beckman with 7 to go. From there to the checkers the top 4 remained the same with Vanover winning by a straightaway, with Down second, Boucher third and Legg fourth.
This was Kyle’s fourth victory of the season, with the last one coming way back on June 7th. I told Kyle that it was nice to see him back at Eagle, to which he replied with a typical but simple “Yup!”. I congratulated him on tonight’s run and he said “Thank you. I wasn’t very good on the bottom tonight even though I got to the front on the bottom. I just wasn’t very good down there but Boucher showed me the top and once I got there it was really good. Luckily, we didn’t get tangled up in the championship battle between those 2 as those 2 eliminated themselves sort of with malfunctions. That was a wild deal; just crazy. It’s fun showing back up here at Eagle after missing most of the year, being able to just have fun and not be tangled up in points battles or anything. Plus, it’s nice to win on a night that’s sponsored by Avid Realty since they’re one of my sponsors.” Kyle’s sponsors include Green’s Furnace and Plumbing, Bigg Johnson Chassis and Avid Realty.
Austin Schmelzle was first back to the flag stand in the 45A on the first circuit of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod A followed by the 413 of Beau Riffel, Shawn Davis in the #77 and the 5S of Roger Sluka. Davis moved up to second on lap 2 as Drake Bohlmeyer passed Sluka to grab fourth in the 24. Lap 3 saw Cole Wayman leap all the way to the lead in his V18W after starting 12th. Bohlmeyer moved up to second, Schmelzle third and Davis fourth. Riffel jumped back up to third the next lap, moving Schmelzle back to fourth. Schmelzle spun out in turn 4 the next circuit, collecting Davis, the 75 of Luke Williams and Michael Sherwood’s 0. The Choose Cone lineup was Wayman, Bohlmeyer, Riffel and the 15 of Tyler Deeke. Adam Vrbka’s 7V and the 44D of Derek Hall both spun out in turn 4 on the restart. The Choose Cone lineup was Wayman, Bohlmeyer, Riffel and the 22 of Matt Andrews. Andrews passed Riffel for third on the restart. Gary Saathoff also got past Riffel the next time around to put the #96 into fourth. The top 4 went unchanged until the white flag lap when Vrbka passed Saathoff for fourth place after starting at the rear of the field earlier in the race. Your top 4 were Wayman, Bohlmeyer, Andrews and Vrbka.
Tonight, marked Cole’s third points victory and win #5 of the season seemed to come easily to the racer that they call ‘Kid Lightning’. He stated “The car was awesome tonight. I think that’s the fastest that I’ve ever gotten through traffic in my career at Eagle. I got to the lead in like 3 laps. They were leaving the middle wide open. We tightened the car up a bunch from last week and it was just on a rail.” I mentioned that along with his Sportmod Championship he finished second in the quest for the top spot in the Sprint Cars. He said “Before I can get myself a sprint car championship I have to get a sprint car win. We’ve been close a lot of times and got 6th tonight and the car was the fastest that it’s been all year. I was happy about that since we have the Nationals next week.” Cole’s sponsors include: Vermeer High Plains, Fox Automotive, Leiting Motorsports, Hertz Car Rental, Zoz Farms, Cherney Enterprises, Kings Auto Supply, Larson Construction, Uribe Refuse, Noonan Industries LLC and Mom & Dad.
Cameron Thompson’s 3TT, the 21T of Tyler Harr, Mike Densberger in the 81 and Adam Armstrong’s 60 were the top 4 after 1 circuit of the Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modified finale. Armstrong passed Densberger the following lap to take over third. The next lap saw Densberger spin out on the back stretch after contact with the 5S of Bob Zoubek. The lineup at the Choose Cone was Thompson, Harr, Armstrong and Zoubek. Harr moved up to second on the restart. Dustin Andersen hit the spin cycle on lap 5 in his 8A. The Choose Cone lineup remained the same as the previous one. Zoubek moved up to third on lap 6 as Shawn Harker also got around Armstrong to put the #40 into fourth place. Your B Feature winner Hunter Weber in the 99W passed Harker on lap 7 and moved up to third the next circuit. Zoubek jumped up to second on the next lap, moving Harr back to third as Harker regained the fourth spot. Armstrong spun out on the back stretch on lap 10 after Harr went extremely high in turns 1 and 2 after Harr came down into Weber who was forced down into Armstrong. Both Harr and Armstrong were sent to the rear of the field. The single file restart showed Thompson, Zoubek, Harker and Weber your top 4. Zoubek put a slide job on Thompson in turns 1 and 2 with 5 to go to temporarily take the lead but Thompson rammed him from behind going into turn 3. Zoubek slammed the wall but got going again. Both Zoubek and Thompson were sent to the rear of the field. That moved Harker to the front with Weber second, John Saathoff third in the 96J and Clint Homan’s #27 fourth. Weber slid high in turns 3 and 4 on the restart, moving Saathoff and Homan up one position with Chad Andersen putting the 8C into fourth. Andersen passed Homan the next lap as Weber also got past Homan to retake fourth. With 1 to go Thompson got into Zoubek again going into turn 3, sending Zoubek spinning and eventually jumping the wall as Thompson also spun to a halt. The tow crew managed to get the 5S off the grassy area and back to his pit as Thompson drove to his pit. The incident set up a Green/White/Checkered finish. Ricky Stephen passed Weber on the restart to move up to fourth in the #25. From there to the finish Harker held on for the win. Saathoff was second, Andersen third and Stephan fourth.
This win, which was #5 in a row, not only secured the points championship but also garnered him the top spot in the combined points battle of Beatrice Speedway and Eagle Raceway, paying him an extra $2,000! I asked Shawn what had gotten into him the past few weeks, resulting in 5 wins in a row, to which he said “Almost 6. We should have won 6 weeks ago but had a little trouble. We’ve just been working on the car; trying to adjust to the track here and we kind of have it figured out so that we can run anywhere we want on the track. Some of the cars in front of me had self-inflicted wounds, taking each other out. I wasn’t content with just riding around so when they were up top I was going to the bottom and if they were running the bottom I went to the top. We just had another good night. I think we had 12 or 13 top 5’s out of 16 nights this year. We were very consistent this year and had success all year.” Shawn’s sponsors include Rage Chassis, Speedway Shocks, Jet Racing, Patriot Crane and Rigging, Shark Bait Candy, “R” Cart Services, Noonan Industries, King Equipment, Patriot Heavy Haul, Tex Cattle. Speedway Racing Engines and Final Grade.
Jordan Ball spun the #1 coming out of turn 2 on the first attempt at a start for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. The restart was called back for debris in turn 2.When a lap was officially in the books Matt Rotschafer led in his 14R with Dan Markham’s 6 second, the Z00M of Cody Muth third and Nick Jensen fourth in the 48J. Brandon Fisher’s 25 made contact with Muth in turns 3 and 4 the next circuit, sending Muth and the 10 of Brad Schreiner for a spin. The Choose Cone lineup was Markham, Rotschafer, Fisher and Jensen. Neil Pella jumped up to third on the restart in the 3N with Ian Roschewski putting the 2 into fourth. The next time around saw Jefry Thompson spin the 2T out in turn 4. The Choose Cone lineup was Markham, Rotschafer, Pella and Roschewski. Roschewski advanced up to second on the restart with Trenton Dowty taking over fourth place in the 53T. Roschewski and Pella both moved up one position the following lap to take over first and second. Fischer got loose the next time around, spun and center punched Brad Schreiner’s #10. Both cars headed pit side. The single file restart saw Pella pass Roschewski for the lead with Markham following him into second. Dowty advanced to third the next circuit. Tanner Dowty put the 7T into fourth place with 10 to go and Trenton Dowty moved up to second the next time around. Rotschafer spun out in turn 2 the next lap but kept going. Debris was spotted in turn 2 though and the yellow flag flew. There was another debris caution with 7 to go for something on the front stretch. Lee Kracht went around in turn 4 with 3 laps remaining for the final slowing of action in the race. The final change in the top 4 came on the restart when Dave Carter took over fourth place in his 2C. Your final top 4 were Pella, Trenton Dowty, Markham and Carter.
Neil became just the fourth driver to win an A Feature at Eagle this season, due to the dominant performances put on by Dillon Richards that had won him the class points championship. I told Neil I liked the wrap on his car and he said “This is my second car; I have 2 cars. 1 for Beatrice and one for here at Eagle. We ran this car tonight; this one is supposed to be for Beatrice but we decided to pull the motor out of it and put a back-up motor in it. After all of that hard work, we decided to run this one for the last 2 weeks. We got second with it last week, ran it at Beatrice last night and with Dillon up in Minnesota we got the win tonight after finishing behind him last week.” Neill’s sponsors include Fossler Family Trucking, Gilland Builders/ Gilland Electric, Premiere Mower and Motorsports, HP Automotive, Salberg Machine, BBR Suspension, JTR Logistics, The Beverage Connection, Stone Cold Restorations, Jet Racing, Schoneweise Trucking and Laffman Hot Rod Garage.
The final race of the night was for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Gunnar Pike’s 25, the 2T of Cameron Thompsln, Adam Gullion in the 91 and Gene Ackland’s 14G were the top 4 after lap #1. The red lights were lit in the corners on lap 2 when the B2 of Carson Bolden hit the wall in turn 2 and went for a wild ride. He was not seriously hurt, but his car was too badly damaged for a quick repair. The Choose Cone lineup was Thompson, Pike, Ackland and Gullion. Gullion passed Ackland for third on the restart and Gaige Weldon in the 35W also got past Ackland to move up to fourth. Pike grabbed the lead on lap 8. Gullion got around Thompson on lap 12 to take over second. The leaders began to catch heavy lapped traffic the next lap. Weldon also passed Thompson, this time on lap 14 to move up to third. Weldon passed Gullion with 9 to go for second place and got around Pike for the lead 2 laps later. Gullion made a huge move with 4 circuits remaining as he dove under both Pike and Weldon in turn 1 to take the lead with Pike moving back up to second. Trefer Waller did a 360-degree spin in turns 3 and 4 the next lap, bringing out the caution. That removed the lapped cars from the equation and gave clean air to Gullion who moved out to a nearly 2 second advantage at the checkers with Weldon second, Pike third and Thompson fourth.
Gullion, much like Shawn Harker has been on a tear of his own the past few weeks and I asked him about it. Adam stated “We’ve been exceptional. That’s the best description that I can give. Our results haven’t really shown our speed. We’ve had lots of little hiccups. We’ve taken the lead with 8 to go and then dropped a magneto. We’ve had other motor issues where we’ve been running through it. When the car is like that anybody can get in it and just stand on the gas. It was a really good night tonight. Sixth to first in the heat, winning by over a straightaway. Then, after they reworked the track everybody was fast and just mile-per-houred it around the top, trying to not get up into the crumbles and not kill your momentum. I was kind of set on trying to get into second at least and stick with Gunnar because I figured that once we got into lapped traffic I was going to take chances that he probably wasn’t going to. I kind of messed up and Weldon drove around me and then drove around Gunnar also. Then, we spent a couple of laps just making speed. There was a lapped car that went up top in front of them and left the bottom open. I just sent it through there and came out in the lead. I made a couple of good, clean laps and then we had that restart with 3 to go and it was just ‘Don’t mess up!’ and I think that was as close to perfect as those 3 laps could go. I don’t think we made even 1 mistake and won by almost 1.8 seconds. All in all, a good night, definitely a good confidence builder going into the Nationals weekend. Right now, the car is exceptionally comfortable. It’s repeatable because I know what to expect and I have a wonderful group of people around me and there’s some great partners we have with us, making my job really, really easy.” Adam’s sponsors include Midwest Petroleum Equipment, Midwest Construction Solutions, Steve O, Ultrashield, Blood Performance Products, Maxim Chassis, Pro Shocks by MK, Brenning Painting, Big Pickle Trucking, Precise Roofing, Kansas Trophy Outfitters, Elevate Stand Co., Tornado Race Engines, Swirlfire Screen Printing, BK Motorsports and King Racing Products.
Well, the bad news is that the regular season at America’s Home Track is over. The great news is that this coming Labor Day weekend is the 13th annual IMCA Racesaver Nationals. Cars from all over the country haul into Eagle Raceway in hopes of not only competing with the best of the best Racesaver teams anywhere but taking home the $13,000 top prize on Sunday. Everything begins on Thursday with each and every car and motor going through the toughest pre-race inspection in the business. Then, after nearly 3 hours of practice, the RaceJugs Race of Champion qualifying tops off the evening’s festivities. After that, there will be a pit party with a DJ and Karaoke. The Melon Bar will be open until 1 A.M.
Front gates open at 3 P.M. and admission is just $3 for adults 13 and up and children 12 and under are free. Pit gates open at 5. Pit passes are only $20.
