Nerud, Drueke, Zoubek & Vanover conquer Day 2 of the IceBreaker Challenge

By Greg Soukup
As exciting as Night 1 of the 2025 Icebreaker Challenge, presented by Auto Trans Matic and Stop ‘N Shop was, Night 2 promised to be even more thrilling for both the fans and drivers. The crowd at Eagle Raceway was bigger and the car count was up from just 120 to 131.
Three drivers were looking at a REALLY big payday. In addition to the regular purse, there was a $1000 bonus on the line if any of the three could repeat their Friday night wins with a victory Saturday. Jordan Grabouski in the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars, Izak Mallicoat in the Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modifieds and Tyler Nerud in the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods were chomping at the bit to get out onto the high banked 1/3 of America’s Home Track and fight their way to the front of their main events and show that their Friday wins were no fluke.
There were 2 serious incidents in the preliminary racing. In Heat 3 for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars Brian Seibold’s 4A spun after contact with the 5ELI of Marty Steinbach in turn 3. His right side tires dug in and his racecar rolled onto its right side.
In the B Feature for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprints Matt Johnson’s #30 got up into the marbles in turn 3, sending him high up into the Armco barrier where it climbed the barrier and came to a halt in the grassy area above the track in turn 4.
Neither driver was seriously injured.
The first A Feature was for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars. Jordan Grabouski started outside of the third row in his quest to go back to back and grab the bonus cash. The original start was called back when Cash Beckman’s 44X spun coming out of turn 4, collecting the 18M of Mason Richards. When a lap was finally in the books Kyle Vanover put the #19 out front with Dan Jackson’s 3, the 66 of Jeff Watts and Jordan Grabouski’s 30 in hot pursuit. Grabouski jumped past Watts and Jackson on lap 5 for second. Benji Legg passed Jackson on lap 7 to put the 84 in fourth place. Lap 10 saw Legg pass Watts for third. Shane Stutzman put his #22S into fourth place the next time around, moving Watts back to fifth. Vanover caught the tail end of the field on lap 9 and began lapping cars. Grabouski kept cutting into Vanover’s lead, catching up to him with 5 to go. They ran nose to tail and at times door handle to door handle, fighting desperately for the lead. With just 2 laps remaining Grabouski attempted to pass under Vanover in turn 1 but ended up contacting the 19 and cutting down his right front tire and dashing his hopes for the victory. That moved Legg to second, Stutzman to third and Watts back into fourth. The top 4 remained unchanged to the finish with Vanover winning, Legg second, Stutzman third and Watts fourth.
Kyle ran a throwback wrap on his car in tribute to his father, a former track champion. “It’s wild! You have a lot of great cars here. Last night we were on the struggle bus but made it to third and tonight we came home with the W. Jeremy at Green’s Furnace and Plumbing had the idea and concept for this special wrap. Four years ago, my Dad won his first track championship. I figured ‘Well, he’s not dying, so let’s not do anything drastic’. So, after 4 years it’s really cool to do it now. Jordan showed me his nose in 3 and 4 the previous lap. With the lapped traffic I dropped down over there. I hadn’t seen him, so I dropped down in 1 and 2 and I felt him in my left rear. I’m sure I woahed up more than he expected and got into me. It sucks for him, but that’s how it goes”. Kyle’s sponsors include Green’s Furnace and Plumbing, Bigg Johnson Chassis and Avid Realty.
Brandon Horton led lap 1 of the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car feature with the 25 of Gunnar Pike second, Jay Russell’s 7 and Tyler Drueke in the 12 close behind. Russell passed Pike for second on lap 2. Drueke passed Pike on lap 3 for third and got past Russell for second on lap 7. Drueke then took over the top spot from Horton on lap 9. Lee 6Goos Jr. got around Russell on lap 15 to put the 17X into fourth then advanced to third with 8 to go. Pike passed Russell for fourth with 9 laps remaining. Goos Jr. got under and past Horton for second with 7 to go. Pike picked off Horton 3 laps later. Jason Danley spun his 4X to a stop along the wall coming out of turn 4 with 2 to go and the yellow flag was displayed, setting up a green/white/checkered finish. The top 4 went unchanged with Drueke first, Goos Jr. second, Pike third and Horton fourth.
“They made us earn that one! Coming out of 4 there, Brandon and I got sideways; there must have been some grease down there that we didn’t see. We both were back to fourth or fifth there, had to regroup and get our momentum going again. The track was slick up to the curb at the top. You really had to hustle. Luckily, our car was just good enough that we got into the corners in the slick and could pass cars that way. That made all the difference”. I mentioned the nice payout, to which he replied “I made a few decisions about racing all because of the money before and it never turned out well, so tonight was clearly all about where we wanted to go and it turned out good for us. I think Roger did a really nice job with the track tonight. The way it’s shaped and banked, it’s flat on the bottom and banks up from there. I think that once the summer months come around and the cushion dries out a little bit it will keep moving up and just organically bring the bottom back late in the night. I think our strong suit tonight was getting into the middle in the slick and then getting back to the cushion. That will just keep getting better in the summer months once the cushion keeps moving up the racetrack. Tonight, it was like 2 car widths from the wall and then just stopped there. I think it’s going to race really nice this year”. I then asked Tyler the question on the minds of so many, did he plan on returning to Eagle Raceway this year? He stated “Man! There must have been a hundred people who asked me that tonight!! We’ll be here; not every week but a good amount, probably 8 or 10 times”. Tyler’s sponsors include Forbes Motorsports, Cherney Enterprises, LLC, American Trailer Co. , Drueke Trucking & Ranch, Zoz Farms, Jeffres Trucking LLC, Angels Energy Service, Johnson Farms, Kings Auto Supply, Jimbell, Double Z Express, Gordon Electric Inc., Midwest Racing Performance, J&J Auto Racing, Speedway Motors Racing Engines, Victory Fuel.
The Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods rolled out next. Tyler Nerud had his work cut out for him if he hoped to double up and grab the extra $1000 offered if he could duplicate his Friday night victory because he was starting deeper into the field from inside the 6th row. Lap 1’s start was called back when the 73Z of Zane Woodman looped it in turns 3 and 4. The first official lap saw Adam Vrbka’s 7V out front with Derek Hall’s 44D, Mason Richards in the 18M and Lance Borgman’s 76L rounding out the top 4. Borgman passed Richards on lap 5 to grab the 3rd spot. Jacob Swanson jumped past Richards and Borgman the next time around to leap up to third in his 31S. The following circuit saw Drake Bohlmeyer pass Borgman for fourth as Tyler Nerud used the high side to jump all of the way up to third. Nerud advanced to second on lap 11 and V18W both passed Borgman to move up to third and fourth, respectively. Nerud closed the gap steadily until he flew high and wide through turns 3 and 4 on the final lap and passed Vrbka just before the flag stand. Nerud won, Vrbka was second, Wayman finished third with Bohlmeyer fourth.
The win, coupled with last night’s victory brought Tyler both the $800 payouts for each night as well as the $1000 bonus for sweeping the event. I kiddingly asked Tyler if I could have a loan and he said “I spent that money a long time ago!! I got into second decently, but Adam was checked out! I think they said he had an almost 5 second lead. The track is shaped way differently from the way it used to be. You have to try and learn every time you’re out there. I felt like I was clicking them off towards the end, maybe 2 or 3 tenths every lap and reeling Adam in but it took a lot of laps to catch him. The lapped cars held him up a bunch and that’s when I really reeled him in. I said to myself ‘We’re either going to win or I’m going to stuff it into the wall’. We went into turn 3 on that last lap and he turned thank God or we would have hit the wall. I want to thank my wife and kids first”. Tyler’s sponsors include Beck’s, Roehr’s Machinery, Kovar Sales and Service, Precision Performance, Hogemeyer Seeds, Blue River Ag, Best Hybrids, Noonan Industries and Golden Harvest.
The finale was the A Feature for the Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modifieds. Izak Mallicoat was up for a $1000 bonus if he could back up his Friday night win, but he too had a large hill to climb after starting in 11th. Nate Thompson’s 3T was first back to the flag stand on lap 1 with Sean Barragan second in the 88, Shawn Harker’s 40 third and Bob Zoubek’s 5S fourth. Zoubek vaulted up to second on lap 3 with Jordan Grabouski following him into third in his #30. Grabouski passed Zoubek for second on lap 5 but lost the spot back to him the next time around. Izak Mallicoat passed Harker on lap 12 to put the #11 into fourth. Zoubek grabbed the lead away from Thompson on lap 13 and Grabouski also got past Thompson the next circuit to take over second. Cameron Thompson brought out the yellow flag on lap 15 when he spun out at the bottom of turn 4. Mallicoat used the restart to advance to third. Mallicoat got under and past Grabouski with just 6 to go but the pass was negated due to a pileup in turn 3involving Brandon Verbeek’s 4B, the 88 of Barragan, Austin Svoboda’s 16 and Ricky Stephan in the 25. Mallicoat passed Grabouski for second place on the restart. Mallicoat went extremely high in turns 3 and 4 with 3 laps left, allowing Grabouski to pass him at the flag stand but Mallicoat got back to second the next time around when Grabouski bobbled. Zoubek had checked out and held on for the victory. Mallicoat was second, Grabouski third and Harker fourth.
He said “I wouldn’t have bet on myself. I started on the front row, but I pushed on the start and Nate Thompson went by me and had the lead for a while. He ended up hooking a rut and letting me by and I never looked back. I knew that Jordan and Mallicoat were coming but I guess my stuff was good enough to hold them off tonight”. I asked him about the last caution, to which he replied “I didn’t see them, and I had a pretty good rhythm going but then the caution came out. Actually, I thought it was the white flag until I saw the yellow light in the corner. I thought “Damn!”. It is what it is. I’ve lost them that way and won them that way. Today it worked out. One more in the win column. It’s a great way to start off the year after winning the championship last year. So, I’m really happy”. Bob’s sponsors include Mahloch Motorsports, Baker Boys Suspensions, Behrens Family Sweet Corn, City Slickers Bar and Grill, Noonan Industries. Klein Construction, Crist Auto Body, Kohmetscher Roofing, Pracheil Farms and Schweitzer Farms.
