Stutzman, Watts, Baker, Hiatt & Drueke finish first at Freedom Fest

By Greg Soukups

The stands were full of fans, and the pit was full of teams Saturday night as A1 Iron and Pepsi Cola of Lincoln presented Freedom Fest. Everyone was anxious to see some great racing action on the high bans of America’s Home Track and to watch the fabulous fireworks show after the features were completed.

The only serious event in the preliminary action came in the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver B main when Bill Garrow’s 3G suffered a broken spindle which set his car rolling. He wasn’t badly hurt, but his car was damaged too severely to continue.

The A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car feature’s first lap saw the 2X of Hunter Wergin, John Meyer in the 29, Marty Steinbach in the 5ELI and Bob Ruisinger’s 7 the first four back to the flag stand. Kyle Vanover jumped up to third in the 19 with Ruisinger holding onto fourth. Steinbach grabbed second the next time around with Shane Stutzman grabbing third in the 22S. Lap 3 saw Dylan Haney’s 12X and the 55JR of Greg Taylor spin out to slow the action. Vanover went to the pits with a flat right rear and came back to join the action after having it changed. At that time it was Wergin, Steinbach, Stutzman and the 1R of Cade Richards. Stutzman passed Steinbach on the restart to snag second. Stutzman wasted no time in grabbing the lead the next lap. Lap 8 saw Stutzman spinning in turn 4 before regaining control and rejoining the action in second place. That made the top 4 Steinbach, Stutzman, Wergin and the 49 of Ryan Harris. Stutzman passed Steinbach for the lead as Harris advanced to third with 6 to go and Richards moved up to fourth the next time around. The final top 4 were Stutzman, Steinbach, Harris and Richards.

Stutzman’s victory came after having to ready a new racecar after destroying his primary on in a horrendous barrel roll in turn 4 last week. “It was really good to be back at Eagle tonight. It’s just unbelievable. I spun out towards the end of the race, but a lapped car caught the front of my car and turned me back straight. I got going and never looked back again. I had Steinbach get past me, but I ran him down and passed him back. Luckily everything worked out right tonight”. Shane’s sponsors include Imperial Manufacturing, Jackson Friesen Construction, Excel Floor Covering, Ready Set Snow, Goldfuss Racing and Fab, Jet Racing, Nielson Blasting, Bob’s Service, Troyer Concrete, Union Bank and Trust, Pro Cut Tires, Wergin’s Lawn Service and Schaefer’s Oil.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature’s first lap was led by Cole Krichau in the 30K with Kyle Schamp’s 2K, the 66 of Jeff Watts and Tim Lapointe in the 18 rounding out the top 4. Schamp grabbed the lead on lap 2. Watts moved up to second the next time around. The 46 of Ryan Gilland and Travis Landauer in the 45 stopped in turn 1 for a caution. Dave Carter advanced to fourth in the 2C on lap 5. Schamp had a tire pop the next time around, moving Watts, Krichau and Carter up with LaPointe regaining fourth. Lap 9 saw Brad Schreiner pass LaPointe for fourth. The yellow lights were lit in the corners again when debris was spotted in turns 3 and 4. Jeff Ware put the 83 into fourth on the restart and moved up to third the next lap with Dillon Richards grabbing fourth in the 24R. Ware vaulted up to second with 4 to go, making the top 4 Watts, Ware, Krichau and Richards.

This was Watts’ second victory at Eagle Raceway this year and came from the second row outside. “It was a pretty good track up top as long as you held your line and didn’t get too aggressive. It was all kinds of fun tonight. It makes up for all the bad nights”. Watts’ sponsors include Charger Chassis, Demon Decals, Husker Health and Rehab, Sonic, Weyer Repair, Barnard Mower and Repair, Eliker Motorsports, Goldfuss Motorsports, Schmidt Machine, Kotchulookin Grafix, Maxons, Browns Shoe Fit, VanWinkle Masonry, John’s Muscle Cars, Sardeson Racing, Escape Band, Julie’s Hot Dogs, Garrison Law, Van’s Waterproofing, La Herradura Mexican Grill and Slezac Racing.

Next on the track was the A Main for the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds. Terry Hurt led the initial circuit in the 24T with Nate Thompson’s 3T, Johnny Saathoff in the 96J and the 6 of Ryan Jenkins in hot pursuit. Saathoff passed Thompson on lap 2 and Jenkins moved up to third the next circuit. Bob Zoubek put the 5S into fourth after another lap was in the books. Dustin Andersen’s 8A and another car came to a halt on the back stretch on lap 6. Jesse Sobbing looped the 99 in turn 4 on lap 8 and headed to the pits with a flat tire. On the restart Shane Hiatt grabbed fourth in the 21H. Jenkins advanced to second the next time around. Hiatt took over third on lap 10 and moved to the lead 2 laps later as Mike Densberger took over the fourth position in the 81. Densberger got past Jenkins after another circuit but slipped up the track with 3 to go, giving the spot back to Jenkins. The final top 4 were Hiatt, Jenkins, Densberger and Zoubek.

“We worked hard, put in a lot of work in at the shop and came back on top; so that’s great for us. I couldn’t believe it! The track had a lot of character in it, but that’s what happens sometimes. We were able to find the right spot on the track and luck was on our side tonight. It was just finding the right groove tonight, so we kind of bided our time to make everything was square so we didn’t get into another incident. It just worked out for us. I want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with Neil Nickolite and Stu Snyder. They’re both friends of our and I know they both got into accidents tonight. I hope they’re doing well and we are sending prayers to them and their families. I have to thank my Mom and Dad, my brother, my wife Kylie and my kids and everyone who helps out all week long”. Shane’s sponsors include BSB Manufacturing, CPD Shocks, Moock Trucking, Dynamic Drivelines, Kevko Racing Oil Pans and Components, JGR, RC Pit Stop, BBR, Skytop Towers, J&K Motorsports, DSR, Big Red Towing, Jed’s Backstretch BBQ, Wetlands Bar and Grill, Spock, Cruz Hiatt Motorsports, Beyea Headers, Emma. Pody’s Bar and Eagle Performance Machine Inc.

The Modern Real Estate IMCA Sportmods rolled out next. Steffen Oaks in the 73, the 9 of Amber Cook, Gary Saathoff’s 96 and Trevor Baker’s 25! Led lap 1. Lap 2 saw Derek Hall’s 44D move to fourth and Baker move up to second. Cole Wayman in the 18W, Joe Feyen’s 25X, Saathoff and the Z28 of Ty Weidner stopped in 1 and 2 on lap 5. Adam Armstrong took advantage of the restart to put the 6A into fourth. Baker took over the lead the next lap as Armstrong moved to third. Oaks grabbed the lead back the following circuit. Scott Bivens cracked the top 4 after another lap in the S56. Matt Andrews in the 22 and Feyen spun out in turns 1 and 2 with 9 to go. Armstrong advanced to second on the restart and Hall again took over fourth. Hall moved up to third the next time around at Tyler Nerud put the 5T into fourth. At the checkered flag it was Baker, Armstrong, Hall and Nerud.

“It took me awhile to get up front. We had that late caution and then Steffen broke so that helped. I was trying the top line, but it was too rough. So I went to the bottom and had to be patient through 1 and 2 to make it work and it worked well. Roger worked the track at intermission and it held up well for awhile, so good for him. My cousin Easton has cystic fibrosis, so we’re racing for him this year; trying to raise awareness of CF”. Baker’s sponsors include BBR, Shaw Race Cars, PM Manufacturing, The National Guard Museum in Seward, Pro Cut Tires and BSB Manufacturing.

Lastly the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprints had their finale. Dwight Carter’s 4U, the 14G of Gene Ackland, Chase Weiler in the 0 and the 12N of Neil Nickolite led the field on lap 1. Nickolite went flipping in turn 4 on lap 2. He was extracted, placed on a backboard and transported by ambulance to the hospital. As of this time we have received no word on his condition. Doug Lovegrove’s 55 moved into fourth. Clint Benson used the restart to put the 100 into fourth. Tyler Drueke vaulted up to third in the 12 on lap 6 and Benson followed him into second the next lap. There were 8 laps in the book when Danley moved up to third and Lovegrove retook the fourth spot. Lovegrove passed Danley for third with 8 to go but lost the spot back to him 2 laps later. Danley advanced to second the next time around and Lovegrove moved up to third. Jason Danley took over fourth with 2 to go making the top 4 Drueke, Joey Danley, Lovegrove and Jason Danley.

This was Tyler’s first win at Eagle in 2021. As Tyler walked up to me he said “It’s been so long since I won I didn’t think you remembered where I park!”. He continued by saying “We’ve been struggling. Stuff that worked last year isn’t working this year for whatever reason, and then we’ve been searching. But, I think we may have hit on something. Hopefully we’ll have some consistency and contend for more wins in the future. It’s a good time of the year to start getting good. There’s big races we’d like to have a chance of winning. Maybe start up front and try to win the Racesaver Nationals! I need to thank all of my crew. Matt Zoz has been working really hard, trying to get me more comfortable, my brother is working on the shocks, Dustin Gerdes does anything and everything for us. I need to thank Mom and Dad, my wife Brandy”. Tyler’s sponsors include Vahlco Wheels, Drueke Trucking and Ranch, Zoz Farms, Jeffres Trucking, Picadilly Ranch, Angel Energy Service, Johnson Farms, 402 Massage, King’s Auto Supply, TD Signs and Graphics, Agri Builders, True Trucking, Sardeson Racing, J&J Auto Racing, CSI Shocks, Speedway Racing Engines, Double Z Express and Gordon Electric.
