Noonan, Horton, Grabouski, Stutzman & Richards celebrate Freedom with wins at Eagle Raceway’s Freedom Fest

By Greg Soukup

If there is a better way to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend than coming out to Eagle Raceway for Freedom Fest, presented by A1 Iron and Twin Rivers I can’t imagine what it would be!!!! It just doesn’t get more American than that. Wait! Yes it DOES!! A HUGE fireworks show after the races are over.

144 Cars filled the pits as a huge crowd packed the stands, waiting for the action to begin, and the fans were NOT disappointed in the least.

A change in the running order had the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars take to the high banks for their A Main first. The initial attempt at a start had to be waved off as Alex Davenport spun his 25A in turn 2, collecting the 4W of Nate Weiler. Jason Danley’s 4X, the 14G of Gene Ackland, Cole Vanderheiden in the 15V and the 15 of Jack Potter were the initial 4 back to the flag stand on the restart. Brandon Horton moved his #1B up to fourth on lap 3 and advanced to third on lap 4. Lap 8 saw Toby Chapman’s 11 take over the fourth position. The next circuit saw Trevor Grossenbacher make contact with the turn 2 wall and come to a halt. Horton took over second on the restart and Mike Boston put the 51 into fourth. Lap 5 saw contact between the 14J of Josh Riggins and Chase Weiler’s 0 causing them both to spin in turn 4. Horton passed Danley for the lead on the restart with Boston moving up to third, putting Ackland into fourth. Boston got past Danley for second with 8 circuits remaining. There were 5 laps left when Clint Benson took over the fourth position in the 100. 2 laps later Adam Gullion passed Benson for fourth. The final top 4 were Horton, Boston, Danley and Gullion.

I told Brandon that he made a heck of a run to the front and he said “In 8 or 9 years now  I think we’ve finished in every single spot in the feature except winning it, so this feels really good finally. I liked the track tonight. I think that running the sprint cars first kind of set in a nice groove that everyone else ran as the night went on. It ended being nice and smooth with a nice cushion to run on and it was pretty fast”. Brandon’s sponsors include Dave’s Auto Body, Omaha Barbell, Duros Dent Works, Little Smoky Barbecue, West Omaha Jet Ski and Camping World.

Next was the feature for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars and the first start was halted when there was a 3-car pileup in turn 3 with the 5B of Matt Boucher, the 5ELI of Marty Steinbach and the 7 of Bob Ruisinger. Deven Schelm’s 51 led the first lap with the 1R of Cade Richards, Hunter Wergin in the 2X and Nick Beckman’s 22 rounding out the top 4. Richards passed Schelm for the lead on lap 2 as Shane Stutzman put the 22S into third with Beckman holding onto fourth, Stutzman advanced to second the following lap with Jordan Grabouski taking over 4th in the 30 the next time around. Lap 6 saw Stutzman grab the lead. 2 laps later Kyle Vanover joined the top4, putting the 19 into fourth. Richards and Stutzman swapped the top spot the next 2 times around before Grabouski got past Richards for second the following lap. Vanover also passed Richards to take over third place with 7 to go. 3 circuits later Grabouski snagged the lead but the pass was negated when Vanover spun in turn 4. That put Jeff Ware’s 53 in fourth with Richards holding down third. Ware got around Richards for third on the final circuit to make the top 4 Stutzman, Grabouski, Ware and Richards.

Shane related “It was a good run, especially between Jordan and me towards the end. We got into some lapped cars and Jordan slid me but I got back by him, then the caution came out. I was in the lead so I guess I never looked back. It’s not fair when Jordan double dips and wins 2 classes in a night anyway. I want to thank all the people who help me out, especially my sponsors”. Shane’s sponsors include Bob’s Service, Imperial Manufacturing, Jackson Fries Construction, ProCut Tires, Wergins Lawn Service, Lewis Performance Engines, SkyTop Towers, Goldfuss Racing and Fab, Union Bank and Trust, Nielsen Blasting and Troyer Concrete.

The Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods rolled out then for their main event. Rich Flock in the 88F, Shawn Davis’ 77, the 66 of Trevor Noonan and Roger Sluka’s 5S led the pack after 1 lap. Noonan and Sluka advanced to second and third on lap 2 as Noah Williams put the 27W into fourth. The next time around Derek Hall looped his #44D in turns 3 and 4 for a caution. Noonan got past Flock for the lead on the restart with Sluka following him into second the next lap as Tyler Nerud put the 5T into fourth. Nerud moved up to third the next time around. Lap 8 saw Adam Armstrong move the 6A into fourth place with Nerud getting past Sluka for second. The final change in the top 4 came with 6 to go as Armstrong got around Sluka to make the final top 4 Noonan, Nerud, Armstrong and Sluka.

This was Noonan’s first victory of the season at Eagle Raceway, but 4th overall. “The car ran great tonight! We had a lot of issues earlier in the week mechanically but thanks to my great crew and family we got it worked out and the car ran great. The track was good tonight. This kind of track really suits our car, slick in the middle with both a top and bottom lane. It was a little rough, but once you figure out how to avoid the holes it’s a good, fun track to race on” he stated. Trevor’s sponsors include Noonan Industries LLC, Suds and Scissors, Rod’s Small Engine Repair, B&D Refuse, Leiting Motorsports and the Load Shop.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Main was the third to have its first attempt at a start called back when the 7T of Tanner Dowty looped it in turn 3. Tyler Jackson’s 13T, the B4 of Ben Becher, Jeff Watt’s in the 66 and the 26L of Brint Lemke led the field after the restart. Watts took over second place on lap 2 with Lemke advancing to third on lap 3. Lemke passed Watts for second the following circuit as Dave Carter put the 2C into fourth. Dillon Richards moved past Carter to put the 24R into fourth with 13 to go and advanced to third with 10 to go. The next circuit saw Watts get back the fourth spot. Just 7 laps remained when Richards got past Lemke for second and then squeaked by Jackson for the win on the last lap. The top 4 were Richards, Jackson, Lemke and Kevin Betzen’s 42 who snagged fourth.

This made it 4 A Feature wins in a row, so I gave Dillon a hard time, telling him he was getting greedy, winning all of the time. He replied “I just try to do my best every night because we’re trying to win the national IMCA points, so I need every win I can get. I started sixth row inside, 11th and I wish we could have skipped that first caution because I was up to 5th in 1 lap, but those guys had other plans. They just made us work for it a little bit harder. There’s a lot more cars here tonight; a lot of really fast cars that could win so they didn’t just give us this one!” Dillon’s sponsors include Fester’s Bait & Tackle, Inline Healing, Jet Racing, Jordan Grabouski Racing, S&L Trenching, Hamilton Construction and Stinger Race Engines.

The final A Feature on the evening was for the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds. Dylan Sillman in the 35D, the X52 of Sean Manning, Cole Wayman’s 3W and the 1Z of Norm Ziegenbein led the first circuit. Wayman moved up to second on lap 2 with Chad Andersen putting the 8C into fourth. Clint Homan looped the 27 the next time around. The restart saw Wayman grab the lead and Andersen move up to third. There was 1 more lap in the books when Sillman and the 40 of Shawn Harker spun in turns 2 & 3, moving Ziegenbein to the lead, Andersen to second and Mike Densberger’s 81 into fourth. Harker looped it again in turn 4 with 9 to go, collecting the 3T of Nate Thompson. The restart was called back due to debris on the track. Manning spun out on the front stretch on the subsequent restart for another caution. Jordan Grabouski put the #30 into fourth on the restart. Ziegenbein advanced to second on the restart with Grabouski taking over the third position. Sillman and Ziegenbein spun in turn 2 the following lap, making the running order Wayman, Grabouski, Andersen and Densberger. Grabouski took over the top spot with 6 to go and held on for the win with Wayman, Andersen and Densberger rounding out the top 4.

I congratulated Jordan on yet another nice run and win. He said “Thanks man. That was a war!! Trying to get through traffic and everything, but the racing was awesome. It was great to see so many fans turn out tonight. That always helps, when you run in front of such a big crowd. I really owe a huge thanks to my crew and family, plus Twin Rivers. That’s where we work and it was really cool to win on Twin Rivers Night, here at Eagle. The track was awesome tonight, it was really racy. Really a good track for us”. Jordan’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Friesen Chevrolet, CBD Racing Shocks, Kaiser Manufacturing, GRT Race Cars, Mook Trucking, Wojo Painting, Sybesma Graphics, Stone Oilfield Service, Hergott Farms, Performance Bodies and Dirt Defender.

The annual fantastic fireworks show followed the final race and was even bigger and better than previous years.
