Grabouski, Snyder, Richards & Andrews are Victorious at Eagle Raceway’s Jr Fan Club Night

Grabouski, Snyder, Richards & Andrews are Victorious at Eagle Raceway’s Jr Fan Club Night

By Greg Soukup

A sunny afternoon greeted the large crowd who came to Eagle Raceway Saturday for Junior Fan Club Night, presented by Great Clips and Village Pointe Toyota. A full field of cars showed up to take on the competition under sunny conditions with temperatures in the mid-80s, cooling off to the low 70’s by feature time.

There were no serious incidents in the preliminary action.

During the intermission there was a free money grab for the kids on the front stretch. Typically, the total would be $1000 to be had but, thanks to One Shot Auto Repair and Village Pointe Toyota the total soared to $1600!!!

The A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars were up first. Lap1 saw the #3 of Tim Horsham spin out in turns 1 & 2 for a complete restart. The first official lap saw the 9 of Gary Laflin, Nate Thompson in the 3T, Shane Stutzman’s 22s and the 51 of Deven Schelm out front. Laflin spun on lap 2 in turn 4 and went to the pits putting Thompson first, Stutzman second, Schelm third and Jeff Ware moving the 53 into fourth. Lap 3 Mike Nichols jumped up to third in the 63, putting Schelm back to fourth. Stutzman passed Thompson for the lead the next time around as Cade Richards put the 1R into fourth. Jeremy Bohlen spun the 10J in turns 3 and 4 the following lap for a caution. Nichols took second place on the restart. There were 12 circuits remaining when Matt Boucher spun the 5B out in turn 4. Richards used the restart to advance to third as Nichols took over the top spot the next lap. Richards advanced to second with 8 to go. The red lights were lit in the corners the following circuit when Thompson ran head on into the turn 1 guard rail, collecting the 53R of Larry Robinson Jr. and sending Schelm barrel rolling through turn 1. Schelm was not seriously injured but was unable to continue. Jordan Grabouski vaulted up to third on the restart as Stutzman took over the 4th spot. Dylan Haney spun out in turn 2 with 7 to go. Grabouski passed Richards for second on the restart and set his sights on Nichols. Nichols was running the low side of the track while Grabouski ran the high line. Grabouski caught and passed Nichols with 5 to go as Kyle Vanover joined the top 4 in the 19. The next lap saw Boucher loop it in turns 1 & 2, setting up a green/white/checkered run to the finish. Grabouski managed to pass Nichols on the final circuit to make the top 4 Grabouski, Nichols, Richards and Vanover.

Jordan was a man of few words as usual. “The race was really cool. It was a great race with Mike Nichols. I managed to pass him out of 4 on the last lap so that made it even better. The track was real good tonight, great for the stock cars and I had lots of fun racing. Hats off to all the guys on my team and  everyone else who helps me do this”. Jordan’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Friesen Chevrolet, CBD Racing Shocks, Kaiser Manufacturing, GRT Race Cars, Mook Trucking, Wojo Painting, Sybesma Graphics, Stone Oilfield Service, Hergott Farms, Performance Bodies and Dirt Defender.

The Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod A was next. McLain Reed led lap 1 in the 44 with Dion Kovar’s 18, the 36 of Dana Deeke and Ryan Arbogast’s  2 close behind. Deeke advanced to second on lap 2 as Kovar fell to fourth when Matt Andrews jumped up to third in the 22. Andrews moved to second the following circuit with Reed holding onto third but Arbogast moved back up to third after another lap. Andrews snagged the lead with 13 to go. Gary Saathoff put the 96 in fourth 2 laps later. Adam Vrbka passed Saathoff the next time around, putting the 7V into fourth. Arbogast took over the second spot with 6 to go and Tyler Nerud  put the 5T into fourth 2 laps later making the final top 4 Andrews, Arbogast, Deeke and Vrbka.

Andrews started in 10th on the starting grid. I asked Matt if he’d just had a run of bad luck or what and Andrews said “When you have to start in the back because of the points deal it’s pretty tough to get to the front. A lot of these guys are really good, and that’s the reason they’re out here. We’ve struggled getting through them, but tonight was our night. I think we were in second four laps in and I know I looked up at the scoreboard and there were 12 to go when I took the lead. From there it was smooth sailing, thank God! I want to thank my wife and kids; they’re always behind me and ready to go”. Matt’s sponsors include Skytop Towers, ArCut Fabrication and Machine, RDM Landscapes, Bonta Medical, All Pro Heating and Air, Big Red Lawnscapes and Raymond Contracting.

Jeff Watts’ 66 was first back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock main event with the 11 of Claton Peters, Tim Lapointe’s 18 and the 3N of Neil Pella rounding out the top 4. Pella passed Lapointe for third on lap 2 and Dillon Richards followed him to put the 24R into fourth. Richards got past Pella the next circuit for third and moved to second with 13 circuits remaining putting Pella in third with Peters holding fourth. Richards passed Watts for the lead with 10 to go. Pella moved to second 2 laps later. Brint Lemke advanced to fourth with 5 to go. Tyler Jackson looped the 13T in turn 1 the following lap for a caution. Don Hall spun the 92 out in turn 3 on the restart and headed to the pits with a flat right rear tire. Lemke used the restart to advance to third, making the top 4 Richards, Pella, Lemke and Watts.

This was 3 in a row for Richards. He related “It’s going pretty good right now. I couldn’t do this without all of my sponsors, my family and my crew chief. Mostly, thanks to Roger and Eagle Raceway. It might be a little rough at times, but we like it like that! I like Cowboy Up tracks”. Dillon’s sponsors include Fester’s Bait & Tackle, Inline Healing, Jet Racing, Jordan Grabouski Racing, S&L Trenching, Hamilton Construction and Stinger Race Engines.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds then came onto the track for their finale. Lap 1 saw a complete restart due to a faulty start. On the second try there was a 4-car pileup I turns 1 & 2 with the V45 of Rik Gropp, Clint Homan’s 27, the 81 of Mike Densberger and the 6S of Terry Richards all coming to a halt. Dustin Andersen’s 8C was in the lead when a lap was finally in the books, followed by Nate Thompson’s 3T, the 3D of Troy Duensing and Shane Hiatt in the 21H. Thompson grabbed the lead the next lap. Jordan Grabouski put the #30 into fourth with 11 to go and moved to third 3 laps later with Hiatt holding onto fourth. 2 laps following that Grabouski passed Thompson for second and moved to the top position after another pair of circuits with Hiatt following him into second. Thompson got back by Hiatt the next time around but lost the spot back the next lap. That made the top 4 Grabouski, Hiatt, Thompson and Andersen.

When I interviewed Jordan following his stock car win I asked if he wanted to be interviewed as the stock car feature winner or the modified winner. He told me “Both! I really can’t thank my crew and my sponsors for helping me do what I love to do. It’s so much fun racing here at Eagle”. I then joked with him that he should let someone else win once in a while, and he smiled and said “Nope! That’s no fun”. Jordan’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Friesen Chevrolet, CBD Racing Shocks, Kaiser Manufacturing, GRT Race Cars, Mook Trucking, Wojo Painting, Sybesma Graphics, Stone Oilfield Service, Hergott Farms, Performance Bodies and Dirt Defender.

Lap 1 of the big dance for the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars saw Doug Lovegrove’s 55 in first, Shon Pointers 20P second, the 4X of Jason Danley third and Alex Davenport’s 25A in fourth. Dan Nickolite vaulted up to third on lap 2 in the 22D as Stu Snyder moved to fourth in the #5. Snyder passed Nickolite for third the following lap. Pointer got past Lovegrove the next time around for the lead. Tyler Drueke took over the fourth position the next lap in the #12. Snyder snared the lead with 17 to go. Points leader Joey Danley suffered a popped tire with 3 to go and headed to the pits to have his right rear replaced so he could rejoin the action. The 5A of Andrew Jackson spun on the front stretch on the restart. A circuit following the restart Shayle Bade looped the 03 in turn 2. From there to the checkers the top 4 remained unchanged with Snyder taking home the win, Lovegrove second, Pointer third and Drueke fourth.

Stu told me “We won here earlier this year, then we got a second and a second, and then it rained. We just haven’t been good the last couple of weeks. We didn’t do good last week, or last night. We went to Speedway today and got some new torsion bars. We got our new shocks and got our motor back from Meyers, so we put them all in and swapped the motor for the loaner we had been using. We still had a little issue with this engine, but it hit on all 8! It was really fun to drive. It got a little bit expensive tonight; the rear tires are bald but it happens. It’s almost July, it’s hot and windy. Hopefully, we can keep this thing rolling because we’ve got a busy week next week! It was kind of a worrisome night. We had a stumble in the engine, so we changed mags, but it still did it about halfway through the feature but hopefully we’ll figure it out. I want to thank KRL Motorsports for giving me the opportunity to race their car”. Stu’s sponsors include Meyers Racing Engines, Harris Decals, Momentum Racing Components, Simpson Racing Products, JR1 Chassis, Mr. Yards and More, Tailored Computers, Hozby Power,  Ultraline Hobbies, Smith Repair, KED Trucking and KP Designs.

Next Saturday is Freedom Fest. Presented by A1 Iron and Twin Rivers. Following the racing there will be a huge fireworks display.
