Grabouski, Kral, Deeke, Saathoff, Jackson, Benson, Arbogast & Richards are victorious at Eagle Raceway’s Healthcare Hero Salute w/ Double Features

By Greg Soukup

Saturday’s Healthcare Hero Salute held at Eagle Raceway and presented by Hotsy saw mid-80’s temperatures and a slight breeze cool off to a beautiful night. Several friends asked “How are you doing?” and all I could say was “I’m at the races, the weather is beautiful, the track is in great shape and there’s 131 cars in the pits PLUS we’re getting double features!! What could be better than that????”.

Since lightning in the area last week cancelled the action before the features could be run, they were held before the evening’s regular racing could be held.

First up was the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars. Nick Beckman in the 22, Nate Thompson’s 3T, the 6 of Jeremy Down and Jordan Grabouski’s 30 were the top 4 after lap 1. Down passed Thompson on lap 3 with Grabouski moving to third and Kyle Vanover putting the 19 into fourth. There were just 7 laps left when Grabouski got past Down for second but lost the spot back to him the following lap. The next time around Jeff Ware looped the #83 after contact with Thompson advancing Vanover to third. There were 2 circuits left when Grabouski took over the lead. The final change in he top 4 came when Cade Richards put the 1R into fourth place on the final lap. Grabouski won with Beckman second, Vanover third and Richards fourth.

Next saw Amber Cook put her #9 out front with the 82 of Mike Leonard, Dana Deeke in the 36 and Ryan Arbogast’s 2 the first four back to the flag stand for the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod A. Arbogast jumped up to third on lap 3. Arbogast took over second the next circuit as Cade Richards put the 1R into third place with Deeke falling to fourth. Richards moved up to third with 9 to go. Arbogast advanced to the lead the following lap. Deeke spun the next time around, moving Gary Saathoff’s 96 to fourth. Richards headed to the pits the next lap making the top 4 Arbogast, Saathoff, Arie Schouten in the 99RE and the 22 of Matt Andrews. Schouten looped it in turns 1 & 2 with 4 to go, moving Andrews to third and Adam Vrbka’s 7V to fourth. Adam Armstrong passed Vrbka on the last lap in the 6A making the top 4 Arbogast, Andrews, Saathoff and Armstrong.

He said “That was a lot of fun! I was able to get to the lead fairly quickly and was able to hold on to it the rest of the way. Cautions kept coming out and that had me a little worried, but it really a lot of fun. The track was pretty heavy and hammer down for the first feature, but as the night went on it ended up getting slick through the middle, gave us a cushion up high and a little bit of grip down low. That made it really racy towards the end of the night. I thought that Roger did an excellent job on the track tonight, especially with all of the races we ran, A big thanks to my Mom and Dad, my girlfriend and everyone else that has helped me out. I can’t thank them enough”. Ryan’s sponsors include Jeremy Leiting with Leiting Motorsports, Mark Leiting with the Load Shop, Lewis Automotive, Sweet Things, Kearney Aarron’s Rent to Own and Fanatics Sports Bar.

Trenton Dowty led lap 1 of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock feature in the 53T with Khrysta Stransky’s 39, the 17T of Troy Dowty and Don Hall Jr.’s 92 close behind. Troy Dowty moved to second on lap 2 with Dan Markham putting the #6 into fourth. Dillon Richards put the 24R into fourth place the next time around and moved up to third the following lap as Trenton Dowty held down second with Troy Dowty grabbing the lead. Markham regained fourth the next lap but lost the spot to Dave Carter’s 2C. Richards vaulted up to first the next lap and Carter moved up to third. Tanner Dowty spun the 7T in turn 4with 8 to go. Carter grabbed second on the restart as Ryan Gilland put the 46 into fourth. Jeff Watts suffered a flat right rear with 4 circuits remaining, causing a pileup in turn 4. On the restart Gilland took over third  and Mike Hansen moved to fourth the next time around in the 94. The final top 4 were Richards, Carter, Gilland and Hansen.

Dillon stated “I just knew that if I got up on the top, into moisture that I could get the others. I just went where I had to go to pass. The track was really good for not having any hot laps. Kudos to Roger for giving us a great track:. Dillon’s sponsors include Fester’s Bait & Tackle, Inline Healing, Jet Racing, Jordan Grabouski Racing, S&L Trenching, Hamilton Construction and Stinger Race Engines.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds rolled out next. Norm Ziegenbein in the 1Z, Jared Deterding’s 13J, Rik Gropp in the V45 and the 3T of Nate Thompson led lap 1. Gropp advanced to second on lap 2 with Bob Zoubek putting the 5S into third as Thompson held onto fourth. Zoubek passed Gropp the next time around. Jordan Grabouski also passed Gropp the next lap to put the 30 into fourth and moved to third after another circuit. Zoubek grabbed the lead with 5 to go. -Grabouski continued his charge, moving to second with 4 to go and taking the lead the following lap. That made the final top 4 Grabouski,

The final make-up feature was for the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Jake Galusha looped the 8B at the bottom of turns 1 & 2 on the start, causing a caution. The first official lap saw Andrew Jackson’s 5A, the 3G of Bill Garrow, Cole Vanderheiden’s 15F and Jacob Dye in the 20D out front. Dye passed Vanderheiden for third on lap 3 but lost the spot back to Vanderheiden the next time around as Garrow snagged the lead. The next circuit saw Vanderheiden move up to second. A debris caution on laap 7 slowed the action. Clint Benson used the restart to put the 100 into fourth and leaped up to second after another lap. Jackson dove into the infield but came back onto the racing surface the next time around, allowing Joey Danley to move to fourth in the 14. Danley advanced to third with 6 to go. Stu Snyder passed Danley for third the next lap and took the second spot on the final lap. The top 4 were Benson, Snyder, Danley and Vanderheiden.

I told Clint that it was about time that he was in the winner’s circle, to which he replied “Yeah I’ll go along with that. I think that the last time I won here was 2016. That’s the last time that I can pull to memory. We’ll take it though. We started outside of row 5. The whole trick to getting the win was to move up through the pack quickly. You have to make your moves fast or you get left at the back and that’s the end of the story for you. At this point, we’ll take what we can get”. Clint’s sponsors include Clint Benson Motorsports, Sundown Homes, Green Beans Coffee, Acme Auto and Fistful Of Bourbon.

The regular weekly show then began. There were 2 major incidents in the preliminary racing, both in the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprints. In their first heat the 4U of Dwight Carter got loose, another car contacted him and Joey Danley’s #14 got caught up and went flipping. He got the damaged repaired well enough to come back for the C Feature, but in the B Feature Joey’s motor started a fire and he came to a halt at the pit entrance. The fire was extinguished but he was unable to continue. He was not seriously injured in either incident.

The A1 IMCA Stock Car Main Event was first and saw Cade Richards spin in turns 1 & 2 and have to be taken to the pits on the hook. Matt Boucher’s 5B, the 7 of Bob Ruisinger, Nick Beckman in the 22 and Dylan Haney’s 12X were first back to the flag stand on the restart. Tim Horsham’s #3 spun out in 3 & 4 on lap 2 for another caution. Beckman moved up to second on the restart. Jordan Grabouski took third place the next lap in the #30 with Haney staying in fourth. Haney got past Grabouski the following circuit but Grabouski jumped past both Haney and Beckman after another lap was in the books, taking over second. Haney also passed Beckman for third the next circuit as Kyle Vanover also got past Beckman for fourth. Horsham’s mount went up in a cloud of steam with 7 to go and the yellow lights were again lit in the corners. Vanover moved up to third on the restart with Shane Stutzman putting the 22S into fourth with Grabouski moving to the lead. The final top 4 were Grabouski,  Boucher, Vanover and Stutzman.

I joked with Jordan that he had to do 3 interviews. He said “No way I’m doing 3 interviews!! I will say that it’s always cool to win here, especially when you can win both features in your class and 1 in the Stock Cars. We gave the fans a great show and had a great racetrack for all of us drivers. I have to say hats of to my guys for working their butts off all night with both cars, 2 heats and 4 features. I want to thank my wife and kids at home too. It’s always great to win at Eagle”. Jordan’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Friesen Chevrolet, CBD Racing Shocks, Kaiser Manufacturing, GRT Race Cars, Mook Trucking, Wojo Painting, Sybesma Graphics, Stone Oilfield Service, Hergott Farms, Performance Bodies and Dirt Defender.

Michael Towle’s D38 and the 77 of Shawn Davis got together on the first circuit of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod A. The first lap that went into the books saw Dana Deeke lead in the 36, Derek Hall’s 44D second, Jacob Swanson in the 31S third and Ryan Arbogast’s 2 rounding out the top 4. Arbogast jumped up to third on lap 4 with the 1R of Cade Richards taking fourth. Swanson slowed and headed to the pits with 10 to go. Matt Andrews took over fourth place with 7 laps left with Arbogast moving up to second. Andrews advanced to second with 5 to go. Adam Armstrong took the fourth spot making the top 4 Deeke, Arbogast, Andrews and Armstrong.

I asked Dana if this was his first win at Eagle and he replied “No, but it’s been a few years now. We’ve come close but it took until tonight to get another one. It was a really good race! I know Arbogast was right on me throughout the race and if I would have made a mistake that he’d be right there. We were lucky and held on for the win”. Dana’s sponsors include Wiestar Towing, The Load Shop, Jet Racing and Watts Electric.

The initial circuit of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Main saw Don Hall Jr.’s 92 leading with the 13T of Tyler Jackson, Kyle Schamp’s 2K and Neil Pella in the 3A in hot pursuit. Pella past Schamp for third on lap 2. Jackson moved past Hall Jr. for the lead the next time around as Jeff Watts pout the 66 into fourth. Pella moved up to second with 9 to go, putting Hall Jr. third and Watts fourth. Hall’s car slowed 3 laps later as Dillon Richards jumped into third with the #41 of Adam Wasserman taking over fourth. The final change in the top 4 came with 2 to go as Richards advanced to second. The final top 4 were Jackson, Richards, Pella and Wasserman.

I complemented Tyler on his run and he said “Thank you. The car was pretty much perfect all night. I got a flat tire in the make-up feature earlier tonight I started towards the front of this one, second row outside and the car was perfect. The track was perfect tonight; a little character as always but I don’t mind that. Tyler’s sponsors include Ace Electric, Capital City Storage as well as others.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A saw Aaron Pella in the 3A, Terry Hurt’s 24A, Jaxxon Saathoff’s 95 and the 4B of Brandon Vanderbeek out front on lap 1. Vanderbeek passed Saathoff for third on lap 2 before losing the spot back to him 2 laps later. Saathoff took the second spot after another 2 circuits and grabbed the lead with Vanderbeek second, Norm Ziegenbein third and John Saathoff’s 96J fourth. Saathoff passed Ziegenbein with 8 to go. Jordan Grabouski got up to second with 6 circuits remaining and moved up to second the following lap. Grabouski spun with 3 to go after contact with the 3T of Nate Thompson. That moved John Saathoff to second, Ziegenbein to third and Mike Densberger’s 81 to fourth. Jaxxon held on for the win, John Saathoff was second, Ziegenbein third and Densberger fourth.

I congratulated him on his run in the feature and he replied  “Yes. I started third row inside and tried the bottom groove right away. It was good and I was keeping up but  I saw someone get up above me in the top groove,  so I figured I’d slide up there and see what I could do. I got up there, took the lead right away and apparently I ran away from the field. My Dad said that when I was taking the white flag as he was going down the back stretch and he said he looked over and saw me coming out of turn 4. He knew that I was aways out there because he was in second. That’s good for him. I used to say that he was washed up, but he’s starting to run me down more often lately so that kind of scares me. I have to thank him first and foremost because I wouldn’t have any of this if it wasn’t for him”. Jaxon wanted to thank including Clauson and Sons Dirt Works, Lineweber Dirt Works, Ricky Thornton Junior, Penner Insurance, Speedway Engines, Kyle Vanover at Speedways who does my shocks, Brad Thorson, Northeast Auto, Capital Signs and Taylon Center who gives me tips if Jaxon calls him, even at 1 o’clock in the morning.

Finally, the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars came to the high banks for their A Feature. Jake Galusha spun the 8B out in turns 1 & 2 on the first attempt at a start. Derek Kral put the 85 out front of lap 1 with  the 91 of Adam Gullion, Alex Davenport’s 25A and Jacob Dye in the 20D close on his tail tank. Gunnar Pike passed Dye on lap 3 to put the 25G into fourth. Mike Houseman Jr. got past Pike for fourth in the 4L the next circuit. Davenport spun out in turns 1 & 2 with 6 to go and Houseman headed to the pits with a flat right rear tire. At that time it was Kral, Gullion, Shon Pointer and the 35 of Trevor Grossenbacher. Grossenbacher passed Pointer on the restart with Stu Snyder also getting past Pointer to put the 5 into fourth. Snyder moved up to third the next lap and advanced to second with 4 to go. Gullion took second place back from Snyder on the final circuit. The top 4 were Kral, Gullion, Snyder and Grossenbacher.

I mentioned that it was Derek’s first sprint car win at Eagle and he corrected me saying “Yeah, first sprint car win ever. I started racing micros about 6 years ago, took a year and a half off. We bought a sprint car, so here we are!. The cushion was treacherous but I knew that starting on the pole I had to get up there or I was going to get freight trained. So, we made it work I guess. I need to thank my fiancé because she helps a ton and all of my crew guys”. Derek’s sponsors include Speedway Shocks, Marcus Kennedy, Lost Creek Motorsports and Adam Gullion Racing.

Next weekend is Driver Appreciation Night at Eagle Raceway, presented by Pepsi and Demon Decals. Drivers will receive a free pit pass to use at any remaining regular event when they visit the payout window at the end of the night.

Also, after the races the famous Hillbilly Slip ‘n Slide will be held after the races.

All 5 classes will be in competition including the Twin Rivers Sprint Cars, Nebraska Lottery Modifieds, Avid Realty SportMods, Valentino’s Hobby Stocks & A1 Iron Stock Cars.
