Armstrong, Richards, Chapman, Vanover & Jenkins are BadFast at Eagle Raceway’s Grassroots Shootout

By Greg Soukup

A beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the high ‘80s and a slight breeze greeted the large crowd that showed up for Grass Roots Shootout, presented by Platte Valley Equipment and High Noon Sun Sips Saturday at Eagle Raceway. By Feature time it was down to the mid-70s; perfect for watching the action on the high banks.

129 teams put on a fabulous show with 3 and even 4-wide racing throughout the night.

There were 2 serious incidents in the preliminary racing, both occurring in the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint B main. On the initial start Derek Kral had the rear end break on his #85 in turn 3, causing him to spin and collect the 25D of Jacob Dye who flipped. On the restart, Gunnar Pike’s 25G bicycled in turn 1 after contact with the 15V of Cole Vanderheiden, causing him to flip. No drivers were seriously injured.

At intermission, the kids were brought to the infield for a Color Run around Mini E Speedway.

The Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprints were up first for their A Main. Cody Ledger in the 35L, the 97 of Nate Johnson, Chase Weiler in the 0 and Toby Chapman’s 11 were the top 4 on lap 1. Lap 3 saw contact between Stu Snyder’s 5 and the 14J of Josh Riggins, ending with Snyder flipping in turns 3 & 4. Johnson took over the top spot on lap 6 passing Ledger. Chapman moved up to third the next time around and advanced to second on lap 12 as Mike Boston took over fourth in the 51. Jason Danley jumped up to third in the 4Xthe following lap with Boston holding down fourth. Boston passed Danley for third with 10 to go. There were just 6 circuits remaining when Boston and Danley both moved up a spot to second and third. The following lap Joey Danley took over fourth place in the 14. Jason Danley passed Boston to snag the second spot the next time around. The battle continued, but the top 4 remained unchanged with Chapman winning, Jason Danley second Boston third and Joey Danley fourth.

Chapman started seventh for the feature. Toby said “We’ve been kind of stinking here lately, but tonight we kind of figured something out so hopefully we can continue that. I definitely want to thank Jeff Stefonick for giving me the chance to race for him. Also, Rich Miller, Bill Wosnik and my son Cody for their help”. Toby’s sponsors include Lincoln Auto Body, Buda Concrete and J & K Trucking.

Next up on the high banks were the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars. Deven Schelm put the 51 out front of lap 1 followed by Tim Horsham’s 3, the 22S of Shane Stutzman and Nick Beckman’s 22. Stutzman and Beckman passed Horsham on lap 2 with Kyle Vanover putting the #19 into fourth. There was a 3-car pileup in turn 2 the next lap with Dylan Haney’s 12X, the 84 of Benji Legg and Horsham all coming to a halt. Stutzman grabbed the lead on the restart with Schelm second, Vanover third and Cade Richards in the 1R moving up to fourth. Vanover made a huge move the next time around, jumping up 2 positions for the lead. Richards advanced to third the following circuit and moved to second the next lap. Stutzman got back up to third on lap 9. 9 laps remained when Jordan Grabouski cracked the top 4 in the 30. 1 lap later saw Horsham loop it in turns 1 and 2 for yet another caution. The top 4 remained unchanged, despite fierce battles for each spot. The checkered flag saw Vanover, Richards, Stutzman and Grabouski the top 4.

I mentioned to Kyle that it had been a while since I had the honor of interviewing him and he stated “It has been a while! They haven’t had any qualifiers for the bus races lately (laughing). We got lucky tonight. In the beginning nobody wanted to go all the way up to the top. I went up there and felt like that was the winning combination; just keep the thing wound up around the top! I want to thank Jordan Grabouski; we’re always bouncing things off of each other. If I need something he’s always there. Also, Zach Woods. I couldn’t win if it wasn’t for the horsepower he gives me” Kyle’s sponsors include Cadillac Chassis, Green’s Heating and Plumbing, , Speedway Race Engines, Speedway Shocks, Jordan Grabouski Racing, Salon Nouveau, Anden Bruns Construction and Schlake Farms.

The Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod A Feature’s first lap saw Ty Weidner’s Z28 out front with Cade Richards in the 1R, the D38 of Michael Towle and Mary Hahn in the 17 close behind. Adam Armstrong leaped up to third on lap 2 in the 6A with Hahn retaining fourth. Richards passed Weidner for the lead on lap 3 with Armstrong following him into second and Tyler Nerud putting the 5T into third. Armstrong took over the point on lap 5. Arie Schouten made the final change in the top 4 with 7 to go as he grabbed fourth in the 99RE. The first four back to the flag stand were Armstrong, Richards, Nerud and Schouten. Nerud was disqualified in post-race tech for illegal valve springs, moving Schouten to third and Dion Kovar’s 18 to fourth.

“That was a lot of fun!! Normally you start sixth row and you look at all of those fast cars in front of you and you just hope that you can get going and get through it and maybe get a top 5. But the middle opened up and I just kind of went through the middle. It was some really tight racing and I think we were even 4-wide at times, but I got clear of it and             got around Cade for the lead and we didn’t get any yellows. So, It was a real clean night for us. I want to thank Todd Deke, my aunt Bonnie Armstrong, Five Two Customs, Vickie and Laurie and my dad Roy with Armstrong Racing Engines” he related. Adams’s sponsors include Avid Realty, Renee Bartlett Insurance, Brooklyn’s Hair and Replacement, Classis Wood, Bart’s Bar and Grill, Jet Racing, Stone Cold Restorations, Todd Deke, Nick and Laurie Nanfito, SCAT Crankshafts, Icon Pistons and Jomar Performance Products.”

Brad Schreiner’s 10 led the first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Main with Tanner Dowty in the 7T, the 41 of Adam Wasserman and Ryan Gilland’s 46 right on his rear bumper. Lap 2 saw Gilland pass Wasserman for second. There was a caution the next time around and Gilland took advantage of the restart to move up to second with Dillon Richards putting the 24R into fourth. Richards advanced to third the following lap. Kenny Roberts took over fourth place with 10 to go in the 69. Richards continued his advance to the front, grabbing second the next lap. Dave Carter put the 2C into fourth the next circuit. Dowty stopped on the front stretch the following lap and Roberts looped it on the back stretch also. Richards used the restart to snag the lead. Gilland moved up to second with 4 to go but Schreiner retook the spot before they got back to the flag stand. The final top 4 were Richards, Schreiner, Gilland and Carter.

Dillon left before being interviewed.

The finale saw Ryan Jenkins put the 6 out front of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A. Rounding out the top 4 were Aaron Pella’s 3A, the 3T of Nate Thompson and Clint Homan in the 27. Homan jumped up to second on lap 2. Jordan Grabouski put the #30 into fourth on lap 7. Pella looped his mount in turn 2 on lap 10 for a caution, moving Grabouski to third and Thompson to fourth. Grabouski advanced to second with 9 to go. John Saathoff put the 96J into fourth with 6 circuits remaining and moved up to third the next time around. The final top 4 were Jenkins, Grabouski, Saathoff and Homan.

This was Ryan’s first victory at Eagle Raceway. He stated “Luckily we started outside pole tonight and were able to get it done. I didn’t really know how far ahead I was so I just tried to keep the car straight, keep getting through traffic clean and hoped to get to the checkers with no cautions. I’ve had a lot of seconds here, a lot of thirds, but tonight was my first win”. Ryan’s sponsors include PSC Construction, C & H Construction, Goslar Farms, Logemann Farms, Precision Performance, Witt Cattle Company and Auto Tech.
