We Will Rock You Night victories taken by Legg, Armstrong, Zoubek, Olsen and Boston

By Greg Soukup

We Will Rock You night, presented by Colby Ridge at Eagle Raceway Saturday night saw fantastic racing before a great crowd under sunny skies that turned to a cool night perfect for watching the action on the high banks.

All heats and preliminary features were run without significant occurrences.

The first main event was for the Kaplan University IMCA Sport Modifieds. Nick Beckman’s 22, the 94 of Mike Hansen, Scott Bivens in the S56 and the 18 of Dion Kovar were out front at the end of lap 1. Lap 2 saw Jeremy Noonan put the 33 into fourth. Beckman dropped back before Steve Osmon looped the 4J in turn 4 on lap 3 for a yellow. That made the top 4 Hansen, Bivens, Kovar and Noonan. Bivens got past Hansen on the restart to grab the lead. Noonan passed Kovar on lap 7 for third. Brandon Spanjer spun the 19XX in turn 4 that lap and Kovar headed to the pits, putting the 25B of Benji Legg into fourth. Noonan moved to second on lap 8. The next time around Legg advanced to third and Gary Saathoff put the 96 into fourth. Legg moved up to second with 8 left and Jason Harms moved the 6H past Saathoff for fourth. Kovar and James Hopkins in the 81 got together in turn 4 with just 7 laps left for another caution period. That made the top 4 Bivens, Legg, Noonan and Harms. Legg got the lead with 4 to go. Spanjer and the 96H of James Hines stopped going into turn 3 with 2 laps remaining. Noonan took over second from Bivens on the restart as Mark Leiting’s 20M snagged fourth from Saathoff. Bivens got into Noonan on the last lap spinning Noonan. Bivens was penalized 1 spot for the contact, making the final top 4 Legg, Leiting, Harms and Saathoff.

Legg said “We’ve been on a really bad streak for a while. We lost a lot of points, but we were second or third the last 2 weeks, so that was better. We haven’t done anything different, but our luck finally changed around. Now that the points are really close, I’m kind of pumped up. I like it when I have to get up on the wheel like this”. Legg’s sponsors include Jet Racing and Toobie’s Lumber.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A lap #1 was led by Brett Saathoff’s 11B followed by Casey Moyer’s 38C, the 01 of Allyn Shively and the 23 of Mark McKinney. Moyer got very loose on lap 2, moving Shively to second, McKinney into third and the 26L of Brint Lemke into fourth. Lap 4 saw Shively passed by McKinney as Roy Armstrong put the 6R into fourth. Roy Armstrong jumped up to second on lap 6 as Adam Armstrong took over fourth in his 6A, but the yellow flag was brought out for debris in turn 2. Both Armstrongs regained the positions they had snagged the lap before on the restart. Roy Armstrong moved to the point on lap 9. Adam Armstrong got loose with 9 to go, allowing Chad Fegley to take over fourth. Armstrong got back past Fegley with 6 to go. The top 4 at the checkers were Roy Armstrong, McKinney, Saathoff and Adam Armstrong.

This was Roy’s second victory of the 2015 season, coming from a 10th place starting position. “The track was a little different tonight. Smooth in most places, but rough in a couple of spots. You just had to choose where you wanted to run. Thanks to my Sister Bonnie and my girlfriend Jo. A big thank you to Racine Hadan; I know how hard she works and how much she does for all of us and doesn’t get the thanks she deserves” related Armstrong. Armstrong’s sponsors include Hummer Contracting and NEAPCO.

The Kaplan University feature saw Mike Lineberry’s 72 the first back to the flag stand on lap 1 with Bob Zoubek’s 33A, the 5 of Dana Dankert and Nathan Landauer’s 11N rounding out the top 4. Zoubek and Landauer both got past Lineberry for the lead on lap 2 with Dankert holding onto fourth. Justin Wulf jumped up to third on lap 3. Chad Andersen put the 8C into fourth on lap 5. 2 laps later Lineberry spun in turn 3 and the 00 of Tim Pickens stopped on the front stretch. Andersen moved up to third on the restart and Shane Hiatt’s 21H cracked the top 4 the next time around. Hiatt passed Andersen with 4 to go, but Andersen retook third the next circuit. Andersen and Hiatt battled back and forth to the finish with Hiatt coming out on top. At the end the top 4 were Zoubek, Landauer, Hiatt and Andersen.

This was Zoubek’s first win of the year and came from the outside spot in row 2 at the start. Zoubek stated “I’m finally getting used to this new car. We’ve had a bunch of trouble lately. After the heat we found broken shock mounts, fuel line problems…a bunch of things. But we got them fixed. I went out and when I finally got the lead I just ran the top of 3 & 4 and the bottom of 1 and 2 and held on for the win. I saw Landauer a few times, so I knew I had to stand on it”. Zoubek’s sponsors include Neil Zank, Ron Dake who handles the maintenance, Gary and Tim West, Roger Klein and Andrew Hille.

Next was the finale for the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts. Erica Cronin led the field at the end of the first lap in the #30, RJ Maas’ 88K was second, Melissa Cronin’s 5M third and Spencer Pavey III’s 32 fourth. Melissa Cronin moved up to second on lap 2. Pavey advanced to third the next time around and took over second after another lap as Justin Olsen put the 14J into third and Jeremy Baker’s 3J snagged fourth. Olsen moved up to second with 8 to go and Matt Moyer cracked the top 4 with 7 left. The yellow lights were lit in the corners with 4 to go. Olsen moved to the lead on the restart. The final change in the top 4 came on the final circuit as Moyer moved up to second. The top 4 ended up Olsen, Moyer, Erica Cronin and Pavey III.

Olsen’s race started in the 10 spot and ended with his first win of the year. “I came kind of late in the year, and this is our second car already. I want to thank my Dad for his support”. Olsen’s sponsors include Weistar Towing, Central Body Shop, Waverly Glass and Custom FX.

The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars then rolled out for their A Feature. Chase Weiler in the 0, the 74 of Lee Bowes, Mike Boston’s 51 and the 14J of Mike Johnson were the top 4 of lap 1. Joey Danley put the 14 into fourth on lap 2. Boston moved up to second the next lap but Ron Love’s 5 and the 03 of Shayle Bade made contact and Love spun his mount 360 degrees, bringing out the yellow flag. Brandon Horton looped his 1Z at the entrance to the pits on the restart. When they got going again Boston moved up to second and then passes Weiler the next circuit as Danley also got around Weiler for second. Danley passed Boston shortly after that. Lap 16 saw Toby Chapman move to fourth in his 7KX. Ben Woods spun the 11B at the bottom of turns 1 and 2 with 8 to go. Chapman moved up to third on the restart as Jason Danley moved to fourth in the 4X. Bowes flipped in turn 1 with 4 laps left and made contact with Bade. Boston got a huge run around the top on the restart and Joey Danley did a 360 degree spin at the bottom of turn 4. Danley was moved to the rear of the field for having brought out the caution. That moved Doug Lovegrove’s #1 into the fourth position. Gene Ackland’s 14G spun in turn 4 with 1 lap remaining, collecting the 77D of Keith Dragoo. Jason Danley’s 4X stopped at the top of turns 3 & 4 during the caution and was towed back to the pits. The finish saw Boston, Chapman, Lovegrove and the 18 of Terry Richards the top 4.

This was not only Boston’s second W, but his second in a row; coming from the 7th position on the starting grid. “Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. I hate to see that happen to Joey. We had a good car, but I’d rather race to the finish” said Boston. Boston’s sponsors include Zach Woods, Ron Sardeson and MTO Clean.

Next weekend is Party Like A Rock Star night, sponsored by Kaplan University and the Nebraska Lottery. The Racesaver IMCA Sprints, Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds, NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks and Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts will all be in action.
