This is how we Rock! night wins to Leiting, Armstrong, Hiatt, Powell and Grossenbacher

By Greg Soukup

143 cars checked into the pits of Eagle Raceway Saturday night and began prepping to put on a show for the large crowd who showed up for “This is how we Rock” night, presented by Colby Ridge. Sunny skies and lots of racing made for a great show.

In the B Feature for the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds, Sean Manning’s X52 came to a stop at the top of turn 3. Josh Kennell in the 71K was also running the high side and slid into Manning’s racer hard enough that it turned over and came to rest on its top. Both drivers were not hurt badly, but had their nights end too early.

When the Sport Modifieds attempted to start their A Main, Gary Saathoff’s 96 stopped at the top of turn 3. Dion Kovar led the first lap after a restart, putting the 18 out front with Joe Schidler’s K00, the 2R of Don Rinke and Shawn Harker’s 40 close behind. Harker passed Rinke on lap 2 and took over second the next time around as Mark Leiting put the 20M into fourth. Leiting advanced to third on lap 6. Trent Roth cracked the top 4 on lap 8 in his 14T. Harker grabbed the lead and Leiting took over second on lap 10. Roth moved up to third 2 laps later. Lance Borgman moved to fourth with 4 to go. Harker slowed with 3 to go and Borgman also fell back. The shuffle at the end saw Leiting win, Roth second, Kovar third and the 7V of Adam Vrbka in fourth.

This was Leiting’s first Eagle Raceway win in a sport modified. “The end of that race was kind of crazy. I cut a left rear with 2 to go and spent the rest of the time trying to not spin out and hold on. Thanks to the guys who help with the car; Jeff Jochum, Jesse Jewel and David Kaltenberg” related Leiting. Leiting’s sponsors include MRI Home Builders, Traditions Pub, Roca Tavern, People’s Mortgage, Terry Electric, Goldfuss Shocks, Williams Welding and K2M Graphics.

Rick Bradley’s 88P, the 38C of Casey Moyer, Allen Shiveley’s 01 and the 64 of John Bruegan were the first four back to the flag stand in the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A. Adam Armstrong put the 6a into fourth on lap 2 then moved past Shiveley on lap 5, took second on lap 9 and moved to the lead on lap 12. Moyer slowed and ended up pulling off with a flat right rear on lap 15. That made the top 4 Adam Armstrong, Bradley, Shiveley and Roy Armstrong’s 6R. Roy Armstrong moved up to third on the restart as Chad Fegley moved to fourth in the 13F. Fegley advanced 1 spot on each of the final 2 laps making the final top 4 Adam Armstrong, Fegley, Bradley and Roy Armstrong.

Adam’s win came from the 6th row. “The track was tough tonight. I tried to just keep it straight and keep my speed up. With the weather we keep getting, I’m just happy we could get the race in. And I’m really happy with the turn around after last week” said Armstrong. Armstrong’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Hummer Contracting, Ron Fox and Sons Motorsports, Scat Cranks and Icon Pistons.

The A Feature for the Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds saw Mike Lineberry lead lap 1 in the 72 with Roger Hadan’s 4, the 4X of Kevin Larkins and Dustin Andersen’s 8A rounding out the top 4. Andersen passed Larkins on lap 2 and moved up to second the next time around as Nathan Landauer put the 11N into fourth. Trevor Baker’s 25! Stopped at the top of 3 & 4 the next lap for a yellow flag. Shane Hiatt put the 21H into fourth on the restart. Andersen took over the lead the next lap with Hiatt advancing to third on lap 5. Lap 6 saw Phillip Byfield’s 10 stop in turn 2. Chad Andersen cracked the top 4 on lap 7 in his 8C. Hiatt took second on lap 12 with Chad Andersen moving to third on lap 13. Dustin Andersen’s engine went up in smoke as he came to get the white flag. That made the running order Hiatt, Chad Andersen, Landauer and Rik Gropp in the V45. That ended up being the final top 4.

Hiatt related “I and the guys busted our tails this week to get here tonight. Heck, last night we still had problems with the brakes and power steering. We’ve had a lot of adversity this year; we really got torn up last week. The car still wasn’t perfect tonight, but I will say that my crew deserves this win. Thanks to them, and to my wife Kylie for putting up with me being one so much to race or get ready to race.  Thanks to Roger too for getting the track ready to go tonight. With the rain we’ve been getting, it wasn’t easy. We all race on the same track, so it’s completely fair”. Hiatt’s sponsors include Jono’s Racing Engines, CPD Racing Tools, Razor Chassis, Shelby Hotel, Knuth Farms, X-Factor Bushings, J & K Motorsports, 3E Electric, BBR, Moock Trucking, Benes Service, Rerucha Ag and Auto, Over the Edge Motorsports, Pump ‘N Munch, DSR, Ian’s Wish and Frank Soukup.

The Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact A Feature saw Erica Cronin’s 30 lead the first circuit with Tom Powell’s 18J, the 3J of Jeremy Baker and Larry Cronin’s 5 in hot pursuit. Larry Cronin passed Baker on lap 3. Lap 7 saw Baker’s car lose the right rear wheel. That put the 33 of Steven Rol in fourth. Rol moved up to third the next lap. The following circuit Erica Cronin suffered a flat tire and dropped out. That put the 5M of Melissa Cronin into the fourth spot. Melissa moved up to second on lap 9. Lap 10 saw Kevin Fearing’s 48 take over third. The final change in the top 4 came with 5 to go as Spencer Pavey III put the 32 into fourth.

This was Powell’s first win at Eagle Raceway and came after starting in the second spot. Powell said “Thanks to all of the fans for coming out every week, and to Roger for the good track. I need to thank Ryan, Josh, George and Jim for their help with my car”. Powell’s sponsors include Moose Mountain Construction, Brenning Painting, King Ranch Customs and Fine Line Auto Body.

The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Feature saw the 18 of Terry Richards flip down the front stretch at the start of the race and come to rest on top of the wall just past the flag stand. Richards walked back to his pit. Shayle Bade’s 03 got sideways in turns 3 & 4 on the restart, getting sideways and collecting the 0 of Chase Weiler. They both ended up in the infield. Bade went to the pits but Weiler was able to continue. When a lap was finally in the books Ryan King’s 13, the 13 of Eric Reichwaldt, Clint Benson’s 100 and the 35 of Trevor Grossenbacher were the top 4. Grossenbacher moved to third on lap 3. Reichwaldt took the lead the next time around as Adam Gullion put the 91 into fourth. Grossenbacher advanced to second on lap 5. Lap 6 saw Reichwaldt loop it in turn 4, collecting King. Both racers went to the pits. That made the top 4 Grossenbacher, Gullion, Shon Pointer in the 20P and Benson. Benson passed Pointer on lap 10. Gene Ackland’s 14G went up an over with 5 to go. He also walked back to his pit. The final top 4 were Grossenbacher, Gullion, Benson and Pointer.

This was Grossenbacher’s 3rd Eagle win this year. “This Speedway Racing Engine and Eagle chassis have really been working great this year. I want to thank Mom and Dad, my fiancé Lydia and my crew for all of their help. And a big thanks to Roger for giving us a track to race on, despite the weather problems” he stated. Grossenbacher’s sponsors include Stop ‘N Shop, Lincoln WinNelson, WC’s South, Husker Diesel and Mark Schmidt Enterprises.

Next week is “Jailhouse Rock Night”, presented by Great Clips. It’s also Dad’s Tribute evening, with an Elvis look-alike contest at intermission. Front gates open at 5:15 with hot laps at 5:30 and racing at 6:30. Adult front gate admission is $10, youths 6-12 are just $5 and children 5 and under are free.

Pit gates open at 4 with pit passes costing $25.
