Story and last weeks Race Results

By Greg Soukup

An earlier threat of rain never materialized, so the large crowd that showed up for Dad’s Rock ‘N Roll Classic, presented by Pepsi and Hormel at Eagle Raceway Saturday saw a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the mid-80’s at race time.

The only serious incident of the night occurred during hot laps for the Duros Dent Works Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars. The #47 of Cody Ledger got up and over in turns 3 and 4. He was not seriously injured and returned in the B Feature, only to be caught in a pile-up that ended his night.

The A Feature for the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Modifieds saw Nick Morris’ 11H, the 18 of Dion Kovar, Cole Wayman in the 18W and the 88F of Rick Flock lead lap #1. Kovar passed Morris for the lead on lap 2 as Joe Feyen put the 25X into fourth. Matt Andrews’ 22 and the 5S of Roger Sluka spun to the infield on lap 5 and the yellow flag flew. Wayman moved to second on the restart and Feyen followed him into third the next time around. Shawn Harker put his #40 into fourth the next lap. Morris spun in turns 1 and 2 with 10 to go as the action slowed again. At that time, it was Kovar, Harker, Wayman and the 17 of Mary Lenz. Derek Hall looped the 44D in turn 4 with 8 to go, for another caution period. Adam Vrbka used the restart to move up to the fourth spot and advanced to third the next lap. Jeremy Baker looped the 3J in turn 2 slowing the action. From there to the finish the top 4 remained unchanged with Kovar winning, Harker second, Vrbka third and Wayman rounding out the top 4.

This was Kovar’s first Eagle Raceway win. He said “It’s my first one here and first one anywhere. It feels so good to finally get it and get the monkey off our backs! My guys work to hard to not get a win. And to get it here, at Eagle specifically! I started out for a year in a hobby stock, but have been running a sport mod for the last 8 or 9 years. It’s obviously a benefit starting up front, especially on a track like tonight where it’s a little rougher. I knew Harker was right there and he was coming because he’s fast every week. We held him off for the last 10 or 12 laps, so we’re really pleased. Eagle has become our home track, and we come out every week. The atmosphere and the party afterwards are just great. There’s just no other track quite like it”. Kovar’s sponsors include Nice Cars, RC’s Pit Stop, Rick Brown, Jeff Martens, SRC Builders and The Wetlands.

Brint Lemke’s 26L, the 66 of Jeff Watts, Kenny Roberts in the 69 and the 85 of Albert Kiihne were the first four back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Main. Roy Armstrong jumped to third in his 6R on lap 3 and moved to second 2 laps later. Watts got back past Armstrong the next time around but lost the spot back to him after 2 more circuits. Jeff Ware advanced to fourth the next time around in the 83. Armstrong snagged the lead the next circuit. Ware moved up to second with 6 laps to go and wrenched the lead away from Armstrong on the final lap when Armstrong went high in turns 1 and 2. The final top 4 were Ware, Armstrong, Lemke and Watts.

This was Ware’s 5 consecutive victory at Eagle Raceway. “I just took my time, picking them off 1 by 1. I knew the lapped cars were going to come into play. I just waited my turn and going into 1 and 2 on the last lap he slowed up way too much. He kind of pushed a little bit and I ducked below him. I think I might have grazed his bumper a little bit, but I held him off for the win” he stated. Ware’s sponsors include Roth Racing, Shane’s Repair, Demon Decals, Charger Chassis, T & R Repair, Integra Shocks and Avenue Bar.

The Hoosier Tire IMCA Modified finale’s first lap was led by Clint Homan in the 27 with Aaron Pella’s 3A, the 96J of Johnny Saathoff and the 25! of Trevor Baker close behind. Saathoff moved to second on lap 2. Mike Densberger passed Baker on lap 6, putting the 81 in fourth and took over third 2 laps later. Saathoff slipped into the infield on lap 11 and headed to the pits to have a flat tire changed before returning to the fight. That put the 86 of Justin Wulf into fourth. 1 lap after the restart the 15 of Rodney Stopak spun in turn 4. Ryan Jenkins looped it in turns 3 & 4 with 9 to go, slowing the action yet again. Densberger moved to third on the restart but lost the spot to Wulf the next time around. Rik Gropp got past Densberger the next lap, putting the V45 into fourth as Wulf moved to second. Homan dropped to the infield with 5 laps remaining. At that time the top 4 were Wulf, Gropp, Densberger and the 5S of Bob Zoubek. Chad Andersen put the 8C into fourth with 2 to go making the top 4 Wulf, Gropp, Densberger and Andersen.

Wulf’s victory came from the 9th spot on the starting grid. I mentioned that it had been quite some time since Wulf had visited the winner’s circle. He related “Yes, it’s been awhile! It was probably the end of 2014. I ran high for the first half of the race, then I finally figured out the fast part of the track. I had set the car up loose

enough that I could run the bottom and stay in the tack, right close to the bottom by the tires. I hit my marks and held on for the win. I want to thank Tim Wulf, Todd Wulf, Nick and Justin Hale, Ethan Geisler and Dylan Haney”. Wulf’s sponsors include Universal Steering, Wulf Enterprises, Courtney Jo Photography, One Horse Saloon, 4G Ranch Saloon, Wulf and Sons Farms, One Four Cut Tires and Volnek Welding.

The ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact A Feature’s first circuit was led by Tim Horsham’s 3, the 35 of Brian Cronin, Devin Bruce in the 52D and the 13J of Josh Young. Nathan Wahlstrom put the 32X into fourth on lap 2. Bruce and Cronin both passed Horsham the next time around. RJ Maas put the 17X into third on lap 8 as Young held onto fourth. Maas moved to second with 6 to go and snagged the lead 2 laps later. Young advanced to second the next circuit. Terry Tritt spun the 5X with 1 to go to set up a green, white checkered finish. The top 4 remained unchanged with Maas winning, Bruce second, Young third and Cronin fourth.

Maas started eighth on his way to victory in a car borrowed from Steffen Oaks. “After awhile I worked my way up to the top 4. With 8 or 10 laps to go I ran down first and second after them being half a straightaway ahead. We had some door to door battles with them before I got to the lead. Everybody told me I ran away with it then, but I couldn’t tell. I’ve got to thank Steffen Oaks, his Dad and Josh. They gave me the opportunity to drive their spare car because my car is out of commission. I was going to throw in the towel, but Steffen came up and offered his car to me. So, all in all it ended up being a good night” he stated. The car’s sponsors include Adam’s K9 Waste Removal, Oaks Auto Repair and Larry’s Auto Repair.

The last race of the evening was for the Duros Dent Repair Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars. Tim Hilfiker spun the #20 to the infield on the start, slowing the racing before it could get started. The first official lap saw Mark Vanderheiden’s 15V, the 5JR of Chad Koch, Mike Boston’s 51 and the 14G of Gene Ackland out front. Boston passed Koch for second on lap 2 and then moved to the lead the following circuit as Trevor Grossenbacher put the 95 into fourth. Grossenbacher advanced to third the next lap and took over second on lap 7. Ackland passed Koch for third the following circuit. Koch then began his move, taking third back the next lap and moving to second after another circuit. Boston was pounding the cushion and

Koch was hugging the bottom. Koch kept hounding Boston and finally got past him with 10 to go. Joey Danley cracked the top 4 with 6 laps left and moved to second 3 laps later. The final top 4 were Koch, Danley, Boston and Grossenbacher.

Koch had just recently moved to Nebraska from Texas and I kidded him that he had moved here just to take home some Nebraska money. He replied “No; I decided to get out of Texas because there’s a lot more winged sprint car racing going on up here. I’ve always called the guys from Pennsylvania ‘Porch Sitters’ and I wanted to be one. I wanted to be able to come to the IMCA Sprint Car Racesaver Nationals and be a top 10 car. I wanted to have a better shot at it. I have known Kevin Ramey and raced against him forever. He came up here last year and cleaned everybody’s clock. I just felt like it was time for me to get out of north Texas because it really wasn’t offering me much anymore. I just wanted to go sprint car racing. In the race, once the 15V missed the bottom coming off of 4 one time I took my shot. I figured it was my only shot because he was running a great race. It was just one of those things where I told myself ‘I’ve got to do this!’. After we cleared him, I felt that we had a pretty good race car. I usually don’t run the bottom, but since this isn’t my car and it’s my first time in the car, I didn’t want to tear it up because I’ve already got a torn-up race car of my own. So, it was hard for me to get up against the fence. It paid off though, because we had it working on the bottom and sometimes the bottom is the place to be”.

The car’s sponsors include KRL Motorsports, Central Body Shop, Helping Hanah and SLS Motorsports.

Next weekend is the Junior Fan Club Cash Bash, presented by Colby Ridge. All 5 classes will be competing including the Duros Dent Works Racesaver IMCA Sprints, Hoosier Tire IMCA Modifieds, Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Modifieds, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks and ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compacts.
