Sobbing, VanLaningham, Ableson, Lindblad & Boston victorious during Super Mania Night #1

By Greg Soukup
Sunny skies and spring-like temperatures greeted the fans who came to Super Mania Night #1 presented by the Nebraska Lottery at Eagle Raceway as the 2012 season began. But as the clouds rolled in and the wind picked up, the temperatures turned downright chilly. But the hardy folks in the stands saw great racing from the 180+ cars who signed into the pits.

There were 2 minor incidents in the preliminary events that resulted in no significant injuries.

By the time the features rolled around, the track turned dry-slick but still had 2 lines. The majority of the racers preferred the low line, but for those who moved to the cushion found that they could be very quick.

The first A Feature of the night was for the NAPA IMCA Modifieds. Jesse Sobbing used his front row starting position to his advantage as he took the #999 to the lead on lap 1. He had Ken Eckhoff’s 5E, the 96 of Gary Saathoff and Joey Danley’s 14 close on his rear bumper. Saathoff passed Eckhoff on lap 7 for second. 6 laps later Eckhoff was also passed by Danley and Max Harder in the 34. The final pass of the race came when Harder overtook Danley on lap 16. At the checkers it was Sobbing, Saathoff, Harder and Danley.

“We had a nice track tonight with a lot of good cars” Sobbing said. “It’s always great to start 1st, and I just had to be sure to not make any mistakes” he continued. When asked if he would be back next weekend Sobbing related “We’ll see what next week brings, but after the last 2 weeks, and with these great track conditions, it’s AWFULLY persuasive”. Sobbing’s sponsors include Razor Chassis, Shocked by DSR, Karl Chevrolet and Protech Electric.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks rolled out next for their A Main. Josh Kennell’s 71k was out front after 1 circuit with Jesse Vanlaningham’s 72V, the 83 of Rob Hobus and Aaron Shearn in the 58 rounding out the top 4. Hobus spun in turns 3 & 4 the next time around, moving Lee Kracht’s 10K into fourth. Kracht took advantage of the restart to pass Shearn for third. Kennell and Kracht both spun in 3 & 4 on lap 3. That made the running order VanLaningham, the 44 of John Cain, Tim Kozak’s 29 and Shearn. Kozak spun on the restart, moving the 21 of Derick Noonan into fourth. Mike Hansen got his 94 past Noonan on the restart and then into third on the next lap. Roy Armstrong, who had come through the B Feature got his 6R into fourth on lap 8 and then advanced to third after 3 more circuits. 1 more lap saw Armstrong take 2nd with Hansen moving up to third. Shearn spun in turn 2 on lap 16. One lap after the restart Hansen passed Armstrong for second. The final top four were VanLaningham, Hansen, Armstrong and Dan Noonan’s 12 who had taken fourth in the last couple of laps.

Next up was the main event for the Nebraska Drive Shaft and Radiator IMCA Modifieds. The first four back to the flag stand were Chris Alcorn in the 3, the 4TW of Tim Ward, Shane Hiatt’s 21H and the 1X of Chris Ableson. Andrew Hille spun the 31 in turn 1 on lap 2. Ableson passed Hiatt on the restart. The next lap the 8C of Chad Anderson looped it in turns 3 & 4. Shane Hiatt took his racer to the pits during the yellow. That moved the 81 of Mike Densberger into fourth. Ableson moved up one position on each of the next 2 circuits to grab the lead. Densberger advanced to third on lap 8. Bob Zoubek moved into fourth on lap 9, then to third 2 laps later. Dylan Smith’s 95 and the 22J of Jace Wikoff came to a stop on lap 13. On lap 14 the 86 of Justin Wulf and Nathan Landauer’s 11N stopped in turns 3 & 4. Zoubek moved into second on the restart. The final change in the top 4 came on lap 16 as Johnny Saathoff got the 96J into fourth. The top four were Ableson, Zoubek, Alcorn and Saathoff.

Ableson stated “It seemed like everyone left the top alone, so I moved up there. After I got the lead I tried to slow down a little and be conservative, but then I saw Zoubek stick his nose under me and knew I had to pick it back up”. He concluded the interview by saying “When I got stuck behind that lapped car at the end I was afraid I’d get passed, but I managed to get around and hold on”. Ableson’s sponsors include Razor Chassis, Bilstein and the Klub Lisa Girls.

Next up was the finale for the Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compacts. Kevin Fearing’s 48 led lap 1 followed by the 4X of Chad Bassinger, Kyle Gannon in the 66G and the 29 of Matt Moyer. Nick Lindblad jumped up to fourth on lap 9, then passed Gannon for third on lap 12. He got around Bassinger and Fearing with 2 to go. The top four remained unchanged to the finish with Lindblad winning, Fearing second, Gannon third and Bassinger fourth.

“When I passed Fearing with 2 to go I knew I had a chance. The track was awesome and you could go anywhere on it that you wanted” he related. He continued by saying “I finally got this Ford going a lot better. It ran pretty good at the end of last season, but now it’s really going. This is going to be the season of the Ford”. He concluded the interview by stating “I want to thank this bunch of guys I race with. Chad Bassinger, Matt Moyer and Barry Kinnersley are always fun to compete with. I really need to say thanks to my sponsors too”. Lindblad’s sponsors include C & O Ford of Fairbury, Nebraska and Fairbury Livestock.

The last A Feature of the evening was for the Budweiser 360 Sprint Cars. Mike Boston’s 51, the 14G of Gene Acklund, Mitchell Moore in the 91 and Doug Lovegrove’s 44 led the field after the first circuit. Lovegrove got past Moore on lap 2. The yellow flag came out on lap 3 when Lee Bowes did a 360 in 3 & 4 with the pack closing on him quickly. Trevor Grossenbacher took the 4th position on the restart in the #35, then jumped to second the next time around. John Klabunde moved to fourth the next lap then to third 1 lap later. Lap 8 saw the 33 of Terry Cadwallader spin in turns 3 & 4. The same lap Kaley Gharst spun his 6X into the pit entrance. Cadwallader went to the pits but Gharst rejoined the battle. Moore retook fourth on lap 14 and got to third after 2 more circuits. From there to the finish there were 2 main contests. Boston had to use all of his skill to hold off Grossenbacher through the concluding laps. But the best contest was for third as Acklund, Klabunde and Moore fought tooth and nail for the spot. Ken Klabunde did a 360 in turn 4 on lap 17. Tyler Drueke got his #12 into fourth on lap 19. As the checkered flag flew it was Boston, Grossenbacher, Moore and Acklund in the top 4 positions.

Next Saturday is Junior Fan Club night at Eagle Raceway, presented by Colby Ridge. Sam’s Club and the Lincoln Saltdogs will be sponsoring a kid’s candy dash during intermission. The Budweiser 360 Sprints, Nebraska Drive Shaft and Radiator IMCA Modifieds, NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks and Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compacts will all be competing.
