Snyder, Leiting, Andersen, Spellmeier & Armstrong Conquer Fan Appreciation Night

By Greg Soukup

Sunny skies, mild temperatures and a great crowd set the stage for a great night of racing Saturday night at Eagle Raceway as a large crowd showed up for Fan Appreciation Night, sponsored by Kaplan University and Miller Light.

All of the heats and B Features were run without serious incident.

Robert Draper’s #62 led the field at the end of the first lap of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature with Troy Sanford’s 12, the 33 of Jeremy Noonan and Arie Schouten in the 99RE rounding out the top 4. Noonan grabbed the lead on lap 3 with Sanford moving up to second and Draper falling to fourth. Anthony Kobus passed Draper the next lap and Schouten moved to second the next time around. Lap 6 saw Kobus move to second and Mark Leiting put the #20M into fourth. The shuffling of the top 4 continued the next lap as Kobus took the lead. Leiting moved to third after another circuit. Trent Roth put the 14T into fourth with 7 to go. Leiting vaulted all of the way into the lead with just 3 laps left. The final change in the top 4 came on the last lap as Roth moved to third. The final top 4 were Leiting, Kobus, Roth and Schouten.

“The track was really good tonight. It was fun watching all of the races. Plenty of good clean racing all of the way through. I was really worried after I got the lead, with Kobus right behind me” said Leiting. Leiting’s sponsors include MPI Custom Homes, Traditions Pub, KVC Foster Care, Ben Bleicher Home Realty, Roca Tavern, K2L Graphics, Goldfuss Racing and Fabrication, Williams Welding, Terry’s Electric, People’s Mortgage, Big Johnson Race Cars, Home and Farm Insurance, Hill’s Pest Control and Midtown Plumbing.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock main event’s first lap was led by the 37A of Tyler Albracht with Cody Leifeld’s 24X, the 69 of Kenny Roberts and Jeff Watts’ 66 close behind. Roberts passed Leifeld on lap 2 then grabbed the lead on lap 3. Watts moved up to third the next lap. Roy Armstrong in the 6R and the 67 of Damon Richards made huge moves the next circuit, taking the second and third spots with Leifeld holding onto fourth. Armstrong overtook Roberts on lap 8 with Richards following him into second the next lap. There were 7 to go when Watts moved up to third and Roberts holding fourth. Tyler Saathoff cracked the top 4 with 5 to go and put the 16T into third the next time around. The final top 4 were Armstrong, Richards, Saathoff and Watts.

Armstrong’s victory came from the 11th starting spot. “I told Roger what a nice track he gave us tonight. This is why we love racing here; a great track and great racing. My sister came out tonight the first time tonight, and I think she was good luck for us. It also helped that we brought out our sister car with Jacob Harms in it” stated Armstrong. Armstrong’s sponsors include Hummer Contracting, NEAPCO, BA Motorsports and Schmidt Machine.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modified A Main saw Jeff Schroyer’s 007, the 25! of Trevor Baker, Justin Wulf’s 86 and the 1Z of Norm Ziegenbein out front on lap #1. Baker snagged the lead on lap 4, but gave the spot back 2 laps later. Ziegenbein stopped at the bottom of turn 4 the next lap. 1 lap after the restart Dustin Andersen jumped up to third in the 8A. Wulf spun at the top of 3 and 4 the next lap, putting the 33Z of Bob Zoubek into fourth. Schroyer took the lead on the restart. Anthony Roth moved to fourth in the 60IV with 10 to go and took second 4 laps later. There were just 4 laps remaining when Andersen grabbed the lead and Roth advanced to third. Schroyer again moved to the point the next lap and Roth also passed Andersen. Schroyer’s lead was short-lived though, as he hit the wall hard in 3 and 4 and headed to the pits. That set up a green, white, checkered run with Andersen, Roth, Zoubek and Baker the top 4. Roth spun in turn 2 with 1 lap remaining, setting up another 2 lap shoot out, with Shane Hiatt moving up to fourth. Hiatt passed Baker the last lap making the final top 4 Andersen, Zoubek, Hiatt and Baker.

Andersen related “I wasn’t sure on those restarts whether to take the top or bottom. I had been running the bottom, but finally moved up and that was working good. I have to give a shout-out to Roger for an AWESOME surface to run on tonight. I want to dedicate tonight’s win to the owner of one of our most important sponsors, Lawnsmith. Bryan Smith passed away this week, and we won tonight for him”. Andersen’s sponsors include Lawnsmith, Nebraska’s Best, Flat Foot Trucking, Southern Transport and the D-Sign Shop.

The Mountain Dew Kick Start IMCA Sport Compact A saw Justin Callender’s 13BS the first back to the flag stand on lap 1 with Nick Lindblad’s 26, the 14 of Ryan Smith and RJ Maas in the 88K close behind. Lindblad and Smith both passed Callender on lap 2. Scott Spellmeier put the 88S into fourth the next lap and took third after another lap. Matt Moyer cracked the top 4 with 10 to go in his #29. Spellmeier moved up to second the next lap. Moyer moved to third with 5 to go and Cole Krichau put the 30K into fourth the same circuit. Krichau passed Moyer the next time around for third. Tom Powell’s 18R stopped at the bottom of turn 3 with 3 to go. That made the running order Lindblad, Spellmeier, Krichau and Moyer. Krichau moved up to second on the restart. The run for the checkers saw Lindblad in a sandwich with Spellmeier running high and Krichau taking the low groove as the 3 battled door handle to door handle. Spellmeier managed to make the pass for the lead on the last lap as Dillon Richards put the 24R into fourth. The final top four were Spellmeier, Krichau, Lindblad and Richards.

This was Spellmeier’s second victory of the 2016 season at Eagle Raceway and came from the 10th starting spot. “I loved the track tonight; slick and smooth all over” said Spellmeier. Spellmeier’s sponsors include Twin Rivers Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Jo’s Cakes and Larry’s Tire and Service.

Brandon Horton’s 1B led the first circuit for the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars and Ryan King’s 93, the 03 of Shayle Bade and Joey Danley in the 14 were not far behind. Bade passed King on lap 2 and Danley followed suit the next lap, taking third. Toby Chapman got past King the next time around, moving up to fourth. Danley started moving forward on lap 9, overtaking Bade for second and then moving to the lead after another lap as Stu Snyder put the 23S into fourth. Snyder moved up to third the next circuit and grabbed second after 1 more lap. Bade moved back into third with 12 to go and Chapman moved back to fourth after another circuit. Chapman passed Bade with 7 to go. The final position change in the top 4 came when Snyder passed Danley with 4 to go, making the top 4 Snyder, Danley, Chapman and Bade.

“This was FUN!! Finally getting my first Racesaver win ever. A great old-school track; flat-out around the top with a good bottom and slick through the middle. I really have to thank my crew. John, Steve, Jeff, Botz, Uncle Todd, Kendal and Chelsea make it possible for me to come out and race” stated Snyder. Snyder’s sponsors include Precise Roofing, Simpson Racing Products, Hozby Power, Walker Performance Filters, Keizer Wheels and Meyers Racing Engines.

Next weekend is the annual Kid’s Night. There will be a huge bike giveaway at intermission. Front gates open at 5:15. Adult admission (13 and up) is just $10 with all kids 12 and under free. Hot laps start at 5:30 and racing kicking off at 6:30.
