Snyder, Hiatt, Ware, Nerud & Richards are victorious at Eagle Raceway’s Salute to Fathers

By Greg Soukup

Highs in the 90’s and a breeze usually leads to a dry and dusty track, but Roger Hadan and the rest of the track prep crew worked all day to be sure that didn’t happen. The large crowd that showed up for Salute to Fathers, presented by Duros Dent Works and Nebraska Lottery may not have been prepared for the fabulous three-wide racing they were treated to, but they got it.

There were no serious incidents in the preliminary action.

Nick Beckman led lap 1 of the A1 Iron Works IMCA tock Car Feature in his #22 with Matt Fralin’s 7P, the 68 of Damon Richards and the 3AM of Dan Jackson rounding out the top 4. Richards moved to second on lap 2. Tim Horsham looped the #3 in turn 4 on lap 3 to bring out the yellow flag. Richards grabbed the lead on the restart. Benji Legg put the 84 into fourth on lap 6 but lost the spot to the 22S of Shane Stutzman the following circuit. Stutzman moved up to third the next lap. Kyle Vanover cracked the top 4 on lap 10 in the #19. Lap 12 saw Legg’s engine go up in smoke and Stutzman moved to second. At the finish it was Richards, Stutzman, Vanover and Beckman.

Damon’s win came from outside of the third row and was his first at Eagle sinc3 2016 when he won in a hobby stock. He said “I think I got to the lead with 15 to go. Then we had a caution that set everything up really well for me. That track was a blast tonight! We always second guess Roger when he goes out there even though it was beautiful after the heat races. Then he goes out there ripping it up, but I trust him. Whatever he’s got figured out it seems crazy, but it works.” Damon’s sponsors include Charger Chassis, Demon Decals, JP Swine, Columbus Motor Company, QC Supply, FX Suspension, RC Pit Stop, Lassek Electric, Hartman Auto Repair, 10a Race Shrouds, Final Touch Detailing, DiStar Industries, Roth Racing, Betzen Lawn Care, Dynamic Drivelines, Swift Springs, ElevateHER, TRF, and Quick Performance!

Jeff Watts looped the #66 in turn 4 on the first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A, causing a caution. After a complete restart, the first official lap saw Adam Wasserman’s 41 in the lead followed by the 46 of Ryan Gilland, Brint Lemke’s 26L and Ben Becher in the B4. The yellow lights in the corners were lit on lap 2 for debris on the track. Becher moved up to third on lap 3. Jeff Ware took over the fourth spot in the 83 the next lap and passed Becher for third after another circuit. Ware advanced to second on lap 9 and took over the top spot the next time around but a caution for Tyler Jackson looped the 13T in turn four. Ware again grabbed the top spot on the restart. Mike Hansen temporarily moved his #94 to fourth the following lap but lost the spot back to Becher the next lap. The final top four were Ware, Wasserman, Gilland and Becher.

Mentioned to him that it took him a while to get the lead and Jeff related “I was in third on lap 14 and took the lead two laps later, so I didn’t think I took too long. It felt good. Wherever the car felt good, the bottom or the top I felt I could run well. I could put it anywhere on the track because it was fast either way”. Jeff’s sponsors include CPD Shocks, Cork and Barrel, BT’s Bar, Shane’s Repair, Hein Auto Body, T&R Auto Repair, Swift Springs, Quick Performance, Dynamic Drivelines, Charger Chassis and Demon Decals.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A Feature saw the 3A of Aaron Pella lead the first lap with Clint Homan’s 27, the 1Z of Norm Ziegenbein and Nate Thompson’s 3T close behind. Homan passed Pella for the lead on lap 2 as Shane Hiatt moved to fourth in the 21H. James Messenbrink spun the 33M in turn 4 the next time around for a caution. Hiatt jumped up to second a lap after the restart as Ryan Jenkins advanced the 6 to fourth. Jenkins moved up to third the next lap. Lap 9 saw Mike Densberger put the 81 into fourth. Brandon Verbeek spun the 4B in turn 4 the next time around for a caution. Hiatt moved to the lead on the restart. Jaxon Saathoff’s 96 spun in turn 2 with 6 to go and the yellow lights were lit in the corners again. Jenkins moved up to second with 4 to go. Dustin Andersen spun the 8A in turn 4 with 3 laps remaining for another caution. The final top 4 were Hiatt, Homan, Densberger and Chad Andersen’s 8C after Jenkins was disqualified in post-race tech for an illegal driveline.

Shane stated “We tried going everywhere. We ran around the bottom for a while, then we moved up top, just trying to pass as many cars as we could. Then I settled in on the bottom because the car was working really good there. I got a little scared there at the end with a lapped car and about lost it for us. But we were able to get enough traction there and ended up winning for which we’re really thankful. I thought the track was awesome tonight. When it’s slick through the middle like that with a good cushion and a good bottom groove that makes for really great racing. When you have multiple lanes to drive on that’s what makes it for at this place! Roger does a hell of a job, making it racey for us every week, so hats off to him. I want to say happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there. I have to thank my wife and kids, my brother and Mom and Dad for all of their help. I can’t thank them enough for all that they do for us. A big thank you also to my crew. They bust their butts every week to make sure I have a great car.” Shane’s sponsors include BSB Manufacturing, CPD Shocks, Moock Trucking, Dynamic Drivelines, Kevko Racing Oil Pans and Components, JGR, RC Pit Stop, BBR, Skytop Towers, J&K Motorsports, DSR, Big Red Towing, Jed’s Backstretch BBQ, Wetlands Bar and Grill, Spock, Cruz Hiatt Motorsports, Beyea Headers, Emma. Pody’s Bar and Eagle Performance Machine Inc.

Steffen Oaks’ 73 was first back to the flag stand to start the Modern Real Estate IMCA Sportmod A with Mike Scheinost’s 51, the 31S of Jacob Swanson and Brandon Spanjer’s 19XX rounding out the top 4. Spanjer moved up to third the next lap as Shawn Harker put the 40 into fourth. Harker advanced to third the next lap. At that time, it was Oaks, Swanson, Harker and Scheinost out front. Spanjer moved to second on the restart as Lance Borgman jumped to third in the 76. Spanjer moved to the lead the next lap. Trevor Baker vaulted the 25! Into third on lap 8. Tyler Nerud put the 5T into fourth with 9 to go and moved up to third with 5 circuits remaining. There were just 2 laps left when Baker made contact with Spanjer. That contact sent Baker to the rear for rough driving and unfortunately put Spanjer to the rear as he had stopped due to the incident. Nerud, Oaks, Swanson and the 18W of Cole Wayman were the top 4. 1 lap after the restart Swanson passed Oaks for second. The final top four were Nerud, Swanson, Oaks and Wayman. Oaks was disqualified in post-race tech for altered cylinder heads, moving Joe Feyen’s 25X to fourth.

He said “It’s never the way I want to get the lead. I didn’t see what happened exactly, but I was sure hoping that the 19XX was going to be in the lead on the restart because that’s my buddy. I would rather race him than get the lead like that. I’d rather finish second to him than what happened, but it’s out of your control. I loved the track tonight. It was wide; almost all of the way to the wall and down to the tires. It was nice and smooth. Roger is doing a really good job this year. The track’s the best I’ve ever seen it in my opinion. I need to thank my family and everyone else that helps on the car”. Tyler’s sponsors include Load Shop, Nerud Farms, Kovar Sales and Service, Grasshopper Mowers, Golden Harvest, Slider Chassis, LG Seed and East Side Bar and Grill.

Gene Ackland in the 14G, Neil Nickolite’s 12N, Gunnar Pike in the 25G and Dan Nekolite in the 22D led the initial circuit of the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car finale. Nekolite passed Pike for third the next lap before losing the spot to Stu Snyder in the 5 the next time around. Pike got the fourth spot back the following lap. Nickolite passed Ackland for the lead on lap 5. Jason Danley took over fourth in the 4X on lap 8. Trevor Grossenbacher got past Danley on lap 11 in the 35. Snyder took over the top spot on lap 12. There were just 5 circuits left when Grossenbacher moved to third, putting Ackland in fourth. Grossenbacher moved up to second the next lap as Jason Danley regained fourth. Danley advanced to third with 2 to go. At the checkers it was Snyder, Grossenbacher, Danley and Nickolite.

Stu related “I started seventh, and that’s probably the best we’ve started here all year, but that’s because we haven’t been running here too much. We’ve been kind of hitting and missing. We’ve been hitting other tracks and just having fun on the road. We figured we’d come back and go back to our notebook to try and find something that worked last year because what we’ve been doing this year hasn’t been working. We found it tonight. We changed things today at the shop and we unloaded it and it was really fast in hot laps. Then we rolled it out for the heat race with pretty much the same set up, then changed it a little bit by tightening it up for the feature. We were able to get up through there and get into clean air. Then when the rubber came in at the end it was just ‘don’t make a mistake’. When we unloaded I thought ‘Man, this thing might take rubber super early, but it didn’t. They did a good job on the track when they went out at intermission and reworked it. That made it really racey. Roger never gives up and neither do we. It did take rubber with about 13 to go, and I could feel it really lock down. I want to give a special thanks to KRL Motorsports. Roger, Ron Love and Kenny Love. They’ve continued to back me the last few years. It’s kind of been a dream of mine to drive for them because I’ve been growing up with them all of my life. Being over there at the shop with Ron having a good time. Also, my whole crew. These guys and gals bust their butts week in and week out. They keep us trucking down the highway, wherever we feel like going and we’re having fun doing it.” Stu’s sponsors include Meyers Racing Engines, Momentum Racing Suspensions, JR1 Chassis, KRL Motorsports, HoZby Power, Robin LePage, KED Trucking, Mister Yards and More, Keizer Wheels and Simpson Racing Products.

This coming weekend is Junior Fan Club Night, presented by Colby Ridge and Village Pointe Toyota. Kids 12 and under receive free front gate admission. There will be a $1000 kids money grab on the front stretch at intermission.

Front gates open at 5:00. Adult admission is $12.

Pit gates open at 3:30 with pit admission being $30.

Hot laps begin at 5:30 with racing kicking off at 6:30. All 5 classes will be in action, including the Duros Dent Works Sprint Cars, Nebraska Lottery Modifieds, A1 Iron/Sany Stock Cars, Modern Real Estate SportMods & Valentino’s Hobby Stocks.
