Smith, Borgman, Nichols, and Grossenbacher are Victorious at Ice Breaker Night #2

By Greg Soukup

After an overcast, breezy day the sun came out just as the first cars came onto the track for the second night of the Ice Breaker Challenge at Eagle Raceway Saturday night.

Chase Weiler’s 0 got spun coming out of turn 4 in the Racesaver IMCA Sprint car B Feature and ended up sideways. With nowhere to go Dan Satriano’s #95 hit him broadside. Luckily, neither driver was seriously hurt.

The first main event was for the IMCA Sport Modifieds and Jeff Brunssen led the field at the end of lap #1 in his 00X followed by the 17 of Mary Lenz, Lance Borgman’s 76 and the 2 of Chris Langdale. Shawn Harker move past Langdale on lap 2 to take his #40 into fourth as Borgman moved to second. Harker also passed Lenz on lap 3 and Gary Saathoff did likewise to grab fourth in the 96. Borgman snagged the lead the next time around. Trent Roth put the 14T into fourth 2 laps later. Harker moved to second next lap and Roth advanced to third 2 laps later. From there to the checkered flag Borgman was unchallenged. Having taken the win on night 1, Borgman got an additional $1000 for snagging the “Twice is nice” bonus. The top 4 were Borgman, Harker, Roth and Brunssen.

“I started 5th, but got lucky and moved to second really quickly. It was tough to pass tonight, but I got to first and just tried to be smooth. I want to thank my wife, kids, dad, mother-in-law and father-in-law for all of the effort that they put into my racing” related Borgman. Borgman’s sponsors include Coordsen Farms, Penner Insurance, Jet Racing, Hergott Farms and Hamilton Construction.

Next up was the A Feature for the IMCA Stock Cars. This was the first time for the class at Eagle Raceway in many, many years and they did not disappoint the fans. Ryan Harris’ 49H, the 16W of Jeff Whiting, Todd Gereau in the 94 and the 11 of Chad Bruns were the top 4 at the end of lap 1. Lap 2 saw Eric Bartels in the B25 pass Bruns for fourth. Mike Nichols got past Bartels on lap 6 and then jumped all the way up to second the next time around as Gereau moved back into fourth. It took Nichols just 2 more laps to grab the lead from Harris. One more circuit saw Whiting also pass Harris to take second. The first caution of the race came with 7 to go when Shane Stutzman’ 22 came to a stop at the top of turn 4. Bartels took advantage of the restart to get back into fourth. He then moved to third with 4 laps remaining and up to 2nd the next lap. Shawn Primrose cracked the top 4 after another circuit and then put the #1 into third on the last lap. That made the top 4 Nichols, Bartels, Primrose and Whiting.

This was 5-time National Stock Car Champion Nichols’ first time ever at Eagle Raceway, and he said “My wife drew the #12 for me for the feature, so I knew I had my work cut out for me. It’s always nice to get a win at a great place like Eagle, but if you can do it your first time there it’s even better! What an amazingly fun track to race at. I’m just overwhelmed by the track, the facility and the people. I truly appreciate Roger for having us here at the track, and hope that he has us back again real soon. I want to thank my wife Anita, Paul and Justin for all that they do”. Nichols’ sponsors include B & B Chassis, KS Engineering and Moser Engineering.

The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars then rolled out for their A Feature. Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35, the 14 of Joey Danley, Adam Gullion in the 91 and Clint Benson’s 100 were out front of the field at the end of the first circuit. Benson passed Gullion on lap 2. Two more circuits were in the books when Jason Danley moved his 4X past Gullion to crack the top 4. He relinquished the spot on lap 9 to the 7KX of Toby Chapman who moved up to third on lap 11. It took Chapman just 3 more laps to grab second. With 11 to go Benson again took over third and Jason Danley moved back to 4th the next lap and took over the third spot the next circuit. With 2 to go Nate Weiler spun the 4W in turn 2, erasing Grossenbacher’s half-lap advantage. Tyler Drueke used the restart to get past Benson and put the #12 into fourth. The final top 4 were Grossenbacher, Chapman, Jason Danley and Drueke.

“I got lucky and drew the pole tonight, and that always helps. The track tonight was different than any time I’ve seen it. The bottom was the place to be, and that’s not how it normally is” said Grossenbacher. Grossenbacher’s sponsors include Lincoln Winnelson, Stop & Shop, Home Reals Estate, WC’s South, Husker Diesel and Speedway Engines.

The finale for the evening was the A Main for the IMCA Modifieds. Kelly Shryock’s 3, Dylan Smith in the 95, Justin Wulf’s 86 and the 25C of Ricky Stephan were the top 4 the first lap. Stephan passed Wulf on lap 2 and Ryan Gaylord also moved past Wulf the next lap to snag 4th. Smith grabbed the point on lap 4 and went unchallenged until Anthony Roth looped his 60IV at the bottom of turn 4 with 2 laps left. Stephan got a jump on the restart and moved up to second with Jordan Grabouski taking over fourth on the final lap. That made the top 4 Smith, Stephan, Shryock and Grabouski.

Smith stated “I started in fourth, but got lucky when a couple of cars were loose and I moved up to second by the first corner. Then I was able to get a shot at the lead. Lucas and I talked about the set-up, and we decided to do something we never do; make it freer. We kept it free and it really rotated well on the bottom”. Smith’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Jerovetz Motorsports, Friesen Chevrolet, Afco, Wears Machine, Active Life Family Chiropractic and Nutelman Panels and Fencing.

Next weekend at Eagle Raceway is the Keep Calm and Race On 2016 season opener, presented by the Nebraska Lottery. Pit gates open at 4 P.M. with pit passes costing $25. Front gates will open at 5:15. Adult admission is $10, youths 6-12 are $5 and children 5 and under are free. Hot laps will begin at 5:30 and racing kicks off at 6:30.
