Schidler, Kaspar, Nelson, Fugett & Johnson conquer Kid’s Night

Schidler, Kaspar, Nelson, Fugett & Johnson conquer Kid’s Night

by Greg Soukup

For the third week in a row a very large crowd filled the stands at Eagle Raceway Saturday as Colby Ridge and Casey’s General Store presented Kid’s Night-Black Jack Bike Bonanza. The weather was great and the smiles on the younger fans as they grabbed their share of the 180 bicycles to be given away were even better!

The only major incident in the early action came in the fourth heat for the Valentino’s ICMA Hobby Stocks as a car got into the #85 of Albert Kiihne, forcing it to turn sideways on the front stretch and end up barrel-rolling several times. Troy Dowty in the 17T ended up using Kiihne’s car for a ramp and launched straight up and over it. Neither driver was seriously injured, but both cars were too badly damaged to return to racing the rest of the night.

Rich Flock put the 88F out front of the Hoosier Racing Tire IMCA Sportmod feature with Joe Schidler’s K00, Cole Wayman in the 18T and Gunnar Pike’s 25 rounding out the top 4. Lap 2 saw Schidler take over the lead as Wayman also passed Flock for second place. Pike got past Flock on lap 4 for third and Shawn Harker took the fourth spot 2 laps later. Pike moved to second with 9 to go and Harker advanced to third 2 laps after that. The final change in the top 4 came the next lap as Matthew Andrews took fourth. The final top 4 were Schidler, Pike, Harker and Andrews.

This was Schidler’s first win at Eagle Raceway in this, his eighth year in a Sportmod and came from the second row outside on the starting grid. “I couldn’t see what was going on behind me, but I was hoping that it was the case that I was pulling away from the field. The track was pretty good tonight, smooth in spots and tacky in other spots; that suits my driving style. I want to thank my wife and my children first of all, and all of my sponsors” said Schidler. Schidler’s sponsors include Jantzen Law Office, Holland’s Garage, Mark Goldfuss Racing and Fab and Larry Peters.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A saw Ryan Roschewski put the 2R in the lead after lap 1 followed by Brooke Fluckiger’s 2B, the 39C of Colby Kaspar and Casey Moyer’s 38C. Fluckiger spun in turn 4 after contact with another car sending her and Nick Beckman’s 22 to the pits on the hook. Roy Armstrong’s 6R also headed pit side under its own power for repairs. That moved Moyer to third and the 46 of Ryan Gilland to fourth. Lap 3 saw Kaspar move up to first. The next lap Armstrong made hard contact with the implement tire that guards the back pit entrance and he had to be towed back to the pits with significant damage. Gilland passed Moyer on lap 6 but the pass was called back when Dave Carter looped the 2C in turns 1 and 2. There was a big pile-up in turn 3 as Don Hall Jr.’s 92, the 2C of Dave Carter and Brandon Nelson’s 23EN all spun. Gilland took third for good with 8 to go. The next time around Jeff Watts put the 66 into fourth. Moyer stopped at the top of turn 1 with 3 to go. The final top 4 were Kaspar, Roschewski, Gilland and Watts.

This was Kaspar’s first victory also but came in just his second year racing. “I’m enjoying racing the hobby stock a lot! I love racing at Eagle; it’s my favorite track. I started out running the bottom because everyone was pushing up until that caution. Then I saw a car on my outside and found out that was a lot faster lane. I need to thank my Dad and my Mom, the fans and everyone else who supports me” he stated. 10A Fan Shrouds and Charger Chassis are among Kaspar’s sponsors.

The Runner Freight IMCA Modified main event’s first lap saw Bob Zoubek’s 5S pushed into the infield and the caution lights lit. Nate Thompson’s 3T, the 1Z of Norm Ziegenbein, Trevor Baker in the 25 and Justin Wulf’s 86 led the pack on the first official lap. Johnny Saathoff passed Wulf on lap 3 putting the 96J into fourth. A caution for debris came out the next time around. Baker moved up to second on the restart. Jordan Grabouski jumped all of the way up to second in his #30 two laps later with Baker third and Ziegenbein fourth. Lap 8 saw Baker get passed by both Saathoff and Ziegenbein. Dan Nelson passed Ziegenbein for fourth the next time around. Chad Andersen’s 8C slowed on the front stretch the next circuit for another caution. Grabouski took over the lead on the restart, but both Thompson and Saathoff passed him after another lap. Grabouski got past Saathoff with 9 laps remaining but Jaxon Saathoff looped the 96 to push the action back 1 lap. Johnny Saathoff made contact with Grabouski on the restart, spinning Grabouski out in turns 1 and 2. Saathoff was sent to the pits and Grabouski rejoined the field at the rear. That made the top 4 Thompson, Nelson, Ziegenbein and Zoubek. Nelson got past Thompson on the restart. The next lap saw Mike Densberger put the #81 into fourth. The final circuit saw Zoubek advance to second making the final top 4 Nelson, Zoubek, Thompson and Densberger.

The victory was Nelson’s second in a row at Eagle. He related “It all played out in my favor at the end. I thought for awhile there that I was going to be a fourth-place car. But a couple cars got together, the caution flag came out and I used that to my advantage. I was lucky and was able to pull off the win”. Nelson’s sponsors include Nebraska Hydroseeding, Scott Pope, Goldfuss Repair, Nelson Tree Service, Popeye Racing Engines, Curtis Construction, Grand Avenue Bar and Grill, Jordan Grabouski Racing, VP Heartland Racing Fuels and Fastenal.

Jeremy Shell’s 17S, the 98 of Jared Jackson, Trenten Fugett in the 3T and Noah Boller’s 26B were the top 4 after the first circuit for the ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact A Feature. Fugett moved to second on lap 2 and Boller took over third. The next lap saw Fugett grab the lead, Boller move to second, Shell third with the 27W of Daniel Morris hold fourth. Morris and the 88K of RJ Maas both passed Shell and Morris the next time around. Shawn Hein jumped to third with 9 to go as Ramsey Meyer put the 21R into fourth. Hein advanced to second the next time around and Boller regained fourth. Josh Young got past Boller with 2 to go, putting the 13J into fourth. The top 4 were Fugett, Hein, Morris and Young.

Fugett also recorded his second consecutive victory at Eagle Raceway and said “That’s pretty great! I started 7th and got to the lead. I couldn’t see behind me, so I just ran as hard as I could and hoped that nobody got around me”. Fugett’s sponsors include Fester’s Bait and Tackle and Hamilton Construction.

The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car Feature saw Nate Weiler’s 4W lead the initial circuit followed by Brandon Horton’s 1B, the 93 of Ryan King and Josh Riggins in the 14J. King took over second momentarily on lap 2 but lost the spot to Riggins after another circuit. Lap 6 saw Kaleb Johnson put the #22 into fourth and move to third on lap 9 as Adam Gullion advanced the #91 into fourth. King looped it in turn 1 on lap 11. Johnson took the lead on the restart and Gullion followed him into second the next time around. Shon Pointer spun the 20P in turn 4 with 11 to go, collecting Toby Chapman’s #7 sending it flipping into the front stretch. Chapman was not seriously injured. Shayle Bade’s 03 was also involved and all 3 were towed to the pits. Jason Danley jumped up to third on the restart in the 4X. Tyler Drueke made the final change in the top 4 with 9 to go when he put the 12 into fourth. The top 4 remained unchanged to the checkers with Johnson first, Gullion second, Danley third and Drueke fourth.

Johnson has been visiting America’s Home Track this season regularly and finally notched his first W there in just his second full season in the Racesaver class. He stated “We’ve been coming here quite a bit this year. We’ve been struggling a lot here, but we threw a couple of different things at the car throughout our times here this year and luckily got to start closer to the front. These guys gave me a really, fast race car tonight and I was just able to drive the thing. I was a little worried under that yellow. I knew there are a lot of good cars here, and that’s the reason that we come here. The competition level is second to none! I looked at the board and saw Adam was behind me and I heard it over the Raceceiver. I kind of figured that he was going to try and throw a slider on me. I tried to just power around the top and keep my momentum up and lead the rest of the way”. Johnson’s sponsors include Medical Machining Specialists, Mastell Brothers Trailer Service Inc., Hochstein Farms, GRP Motorsports, Big Al’s Die Cast Racing, Merle Johnson Farm Toys, Kat’s Hog Heaven, Hegg Realtors, Dave’s Lawn Care and Landscaping and Snyder Logging and Tree Service.
