Saathoff, Borgman, Carter, Krichau & Pointer win at Summer Sizzle

Saathoff, Borgman, Carter, Krichau & Pointer win at Summer Sizzle

By Greg Soukup

Summer Sizzle, presented by Hormel, Budweiser and Wow FM at Eagle Raceway Saturday night saw 154 teams make the tow to present the large crowd with some great racing under sunny skies.

Unfortunately, the heats saw several nasty accidents.

Heat #3 for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks saw Rick Bradley’s 28P slide sideways into the implement tire guarding the entrance to the pits and end up on its side.

Heat 3 was also unlucky for Jan Korth in the Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds as his #42K slammed into the implement tire at the back pit entrance and then flipped destroying his racer.

Keith Dragoo’s 77D made contact with the 7KX of Toby Chapman in the second heat for the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars, started bouncing and hit the wall in turns 1 & 2, subsequently flipping. Heat 3 for the sprinters saw the 51 of Corey Kautz contact the Armco in turns 1 & 2 and end up flipping.

None of the drivers were seriously injured.

The first A Main was for the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds and saw Troy Sanford’s #12 at the point after the first lap with the 31R of James Hines and Mike Hansen in the 94 in hot pursuit. Trent Roth’s 14T stopped on the front stretch the next lap for a caution period. Lap 4 saw Scott Bivens crack the top 4 in his #56S and move up to third the next time around. Hines and Bivens both passed Sanford on lap 6 with Bivens taking the top spot after another circuit. Lance Borgman put the #76 into fourth with 10 to go and vaulted up to second the next time around, but had to go back to fourth as the 62 of Robert Draper spun in turn 2. That made the top 4 Bivens, Hines, Sanford and Borgman. Borgman again took second on the restart with Brian Osantowski’s 999 moving into third and Hines holding fourth. Jason Harms moved to fourth in the 6H with 6 to go as Borgman grabbed the lead. Draper looped his racer again with 4 laps remaining. Justin Addison spun the 26J in 1 & 2 on the restart. Jeremy Noonan looped the 33 in 1 & 2 on the restart. At that point the race was called on time. Borgman, Bivens, Osantowski and Harms were the top 4.

Borgman’s 4th victory of the year came after starting 17th on the starting grid. “I got going on the bottom, but ended up moving up and found it a lot had a lot more room to pass. I got to the front and just held on to the end. Thanks to my father-in-law Lawrence, my Dad Brad and of course my wife and kids” said Borgman. Borgman’s sponsors include Coordsen Farms, Penner Insurance, Jet Racing and Hergott Farms.

Brint Lemke’s 26L, the 37A of Tyler Albracht, the 18 of Tim LaPointe and Cody Leifeld in the 24X led the pack after the first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A. Lap 4 saw Dave Carter take over the fourth spot and move to second the next lap. 1 more lap saw Leifeld advance to third with Jeff Watts putting the 66 into fourth. Albracht spun out in turns 1 & 2 on lap 9. Carter took the lead on the restart with Leifeld grabbing second.  Watts grabbed third the next lap as Damon Richards moved up to fourth. Richards took over the third spot the next time around and 1 more circuit saw Roy Armstrong took over fourth. Richards moved up to second with 5 to go and Armstong grabbed third 2 laps later, making the top 4 Carter, Richards, Armstrong and Leifeld.

This was Carter’s first win at Eagle Raceway in 2016, coming from 7th. “The track was nice and smooth tonight, with plenty of room to race on the top and bottom. I started running the inside because it had a good bite, but when I got the lead I moved to the top” related Carter. Carter’s sponsors include Village Point Toyota Scion, Big Daddy Chassis, Low Budget Customs and Demon Decals.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modified’s feature saw Jeff Schroyer’s 007, the 3A of Aaron Pella, Bob Ruisinger in the 7 and the 25! of Trevor Baker out front. Baker moved to third on lap 2. Justin Wulf took over fourth in his #86 the next time around with Baker grabbing second on lap 4. 2 laps later Wulf advanced to third. The next circuit saw Chad Andersen’s 8C and Scott Smith’s 50 spin in turn 2. Johnny Saathoff put the 96J into fourth on the restart and moved up to third the next lap. Saathoff grabbed second on lap 9. Rik Gropp took over fourth the next time around. Roger “Chevy” Hadan took the fourth spot with 7 laps remaining as Saathoff grabbed the lead. Baker grabbed second the next lap; lost the spot to Schroyer and retook it after another circuit. Gropp also passed Schroyer also. Schroyer stopped in turn 4 with 1 to go with front end damage. Hadan took over third on the restart, only to fall behind the 8A of Dustin Andersen and Bob Zoubek in the 33Z. The final top 4 were Saathoff, Baker, Dustin Andersen and Zoubek.

Saathoff’s first victory of the season was special to him. “My son Jaxon won his first feature tonight in the B Feature. I gave Jaxon the car I’ve been driving all year, and made a couple of changes. I‘m using a new car with an open motor. This is my 37th year racing. Jaxon won at 14! At 14 I was cleaning up and fixing the bleachers here at Eagle and he’s racing here at the same age. The track’s been good all year, and seems to be getting better. It’s always a good show here at Eagle” stated Saathoff. Saathoff’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Independent Equipment, Schmidt’s Inc., I-70 Auto Auction, Penner Insurance and Karl’s Performance.

The Mountain Dew Kick Start IMCA Sport Compact A saw Nick Morris’ 11H, the 51 of Amanda Rhiley, Sarah Cronin in the 8 and Justin Callender’s 13BS lead lap 1. Larry Cronin’s 70SS and Callender both passed Sarah Cronin on lap 3. Larry Cronin moved to third the next time around as Kyle Owen put the 3B into fourth. Larry Cronin advanced to second the next lap and Owen followed him into third after another lap while Cole Krichau put the 30K into fourth. Larry Cronin took the lead with 8 to go. Krichau moved up to second the next lap. Jeremy Bohlen cracked the top 4 after another lap. 1 more circuit saw Bohlen move up to third and Krichau take the lead. The next lap saw Larry Cronin head to the infield. The final top 4 were Krichau, Bohlen, Dillon Richards and Kyle Owen.

Krichau’s 4th 2016 win came from 10th “Tonight was an adventure getting to the front. Everybody was all sideways without wrecking. This was probably my funnest race here ever. Everybody ran hard tonight: he said. Krichau’s sponsors include Moonlight Ranch and Larry’s Auto Salvage.

Chase Weiler in the 0, Shon Pointer’s 20P, the 4W of Nate Weiler and Mike Boston in the 51 led the initial circuit of the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car finale. Toby Chapman’s 7KX passed Boston on lap 2 for fourth but lost the spot to the 23S of Stu Snyder the next lap and Pointer passed Chase Weiler for first. Clint Benson flipped his #100 the next time around for a red flag. Benson was not seriously hurt. Snyder moved up to third on the restart and moved up to second after another lap while Nate Weiler took third. Another lap saw Boston move into fourth again. Chase Weiler advanced to second after another lap and took the lead after 2 more circuits using the low line. Chase Weiler flipped his sprinter with 10 to go but was not seriously hurt. Trevor Grossenbacher grabbed fourth on the restart in the 35. Pointer and Snyder ran the cushion while Nate Weiler hugged the inside with Weiler holding the lead until 6 to go when Pointer got around him for the lead. Weiler regained the lead the next lap only to lose the point for good with 3 laps left as Pointer rode the cushion. The final change in the top 4 came on the next lap as Snyder also passed Weiler. The top 4 were Pointer, Snyder, Nate Weiler and Jason Martin’s 5X who passed Grossenbacher in the last circuits.

This was Pointer’s first victory in the Racesaver Sprint class. Pointer said “We’ve worked our butts off getting here. This win was a long time coming, and it sure tops my losing the points by 1 point last year! I want to thank my parents who are my biggest sponsors and supporters”. Pointer’s sponsors include Speedway Motors, Consolidated Concrete, Ken’s Auto Repair and Service, TerJak Construction, Mike Hieb and B G & S Transmission.
