Saathoff, Andrews, Riggins, Gilland, & Richards win at Armed Forces Night

Saathoff, Andrews, Riggins, Gilland, & Richards win at Armed Forces Night

By Greg Soukup

Another gorgeous day was on tap as Twin Rivers presented Memorial Day Extravaganza at Eagle Raceway Saturday.

There was one serious incident in the preliminary racing when Dustin Andersen and Bob Zoubek made contact coming down the front stretch with Andersen ending up on his roof. He was not seriously injured and made sufficient repairs to take the green flag in his preliminary feature but pulled to the infield at the start.

Gary Laflin put the #9 out front of the initial lap for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car Feature with the 5ELI of Marty Steinbach, Nate Thompson’s 3T and the 55X of Tim Drake rounding out the top 4. Lap 2 saw Nick Beckman pass Drake to take over fourth in the 22. The following lap saw Dillon Richards put the #30 into fourth place. Dillon was running Jordan Grabouski’s car after blowing up the engine in his 24R last Saturday. Thompson moved up to second place on lap 5, then snagged the lead 2 laps later with Richards moving up to third that lap. Both passes were negated when a 3-car pileup occurred in turns 3 and 4 involving Max Harder in the 34, Jeremy Down’s 6 and David Carter in the 2C. Steinbach took advantage of the restart to take over second place as Thompson again advanced to first and Richards moved up to third. The following lap saw Tim Drake in the 55X take fourth place. Steinbach passed Thompson the next time around for the lead with Richards moving up to second. Richards got past Steinbach with 7 to go for the lead. The action slowed the next lap as Matt Boucher in the 5B and Dylan Haney’s 12X stopped in turns 3 & 4. Drake moved up to third with 5 to go and advanced to second with 3 to go. Steinbach crawled back to fourth the next time around making the top 4 Richards, Drake, Thompson and Steinbach.

Dillon left before being interviewed. His sponsors include JGR, CPD Shocks, S&L Trenching and Fester’s Bait and Tackle.

Next up was the A Feature for the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. Richard Flock in the 88F, Mike Scheinost’s 51, the 15 of Tyler Deeke and the 8X of Justin Bell were the top 4 on lap 1. Bell moved up to third on lap 2. Matt Andrews passed Deeke the next lap to put the 22 into fourth. Andrews moved up to third the next time around as Adam Armstrong took over fourth in the 6A. Andrews continued his march to the front, taking second from Scheinost the next lap with Armstrong following him into third on lap 7. 10 circuits remained when Andrews got past Flock for the lead as Mason Richards took over the fourth spot in his 18M. The following time around saw the 31S of Jacob Swanson and Lee Horky’s #7 spin out in turn 2 for a caution. Richards used the restart to advance to third and passed Armstrong for second with 7 to go. Armstrong got the spot back 2 laps later. The final change in the top 4 came with 4 laps left when Derek Hall got up to fourth in the 44D. The final top 4 were Andrews, Armstrong, Mason and Hall.

This was Matt’s second victory of the season at Eagle Raceway. He said “I was being patient, not wanting to jerking around and moving the car too much. I always watch quite a bit ahead of me, especially how the cars were getting into the corners because it was slick getting in and hammer down coming off. They were going in too hard and sliding up, so I took advantage of going in slow and driving by them on the bottom. This race was for my father-in-law; he had a rough week last week. We had a rough week here last week, breaking stuff. Flock is a hell of a man, giving us a car to give us a chance but we missed the win by one spot. Everything that broke this week, usually I’ve got him there helping me rebuild it but he had other obligations obviously but we were able to get it fixed and still get the win tonight. So, this one is for him”. Matt’s sponsors include John Bonta Skytop Towers, Raymond Contracting,  Big Red Lawn Care, JM Billiards, All Pro, PBS Rentals and Strategic EMS.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified main event was up next. Norm Ziegenbein’s 1Z led the first circuit, Shawn Harker was second in the 40, Aaron Pella’s 3A held third and fourth was the 96 of Jaxon Saathoff. Pella looped it in turn 1 and 2 on lap 2 moving Saathoff to third and the 8C of Dustin Andersen to fourth. Harker moved to the lead on the restart with Andersen jumping up to second, Ziegenbein holding down third and Saathoff falling to fourth. Saathoff vaulted back up to second the next circuit with Terry Hurt putting the 24T into fourth. Saathoff and Harker swapped the lead over the next three laps with Saathoff holding the spot, losing it to Harker after another lap and retaking the top spot the following circuit. The leaders began encountering lapped traffic with 8 to go. Andersen got around Harker for second with 5 laps to go but lost the position back to Harker with 2 to go as Bob Zoubek put the 5S into fourth. Saathoff won with Harker second, Hurt third and Zoubek fourth.

Jaxon jumped into my vehicle saying “Dad does it and I want to do just like he does. I came out here this year with a brand new car that we built this winter. I thought the night of my birthday last week I raced out here it was going to be a birthday special but I’m pretty sure I spun myself out and got wrecked. So, I had to come and redeem myself this weekend. I led everywhere lap except the last one last week. This week I got the lead and led pretty much every lap and got it done. First and foremost, I need to thank my Dad because I wouldn’t be anywhere without him. Also, Kyle Vanover at Speedway for doing my shocks and everyone that helps with the car”. Jaxon’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Northeast Auto in Beatrice, Lineweber Dirt Works, Clauson and Sons Dirt Works, Speedway Shocks, Hypercoil Springs and Wehr’s Machine.

The first attempt at a start to the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Main was called back when Tyler Jackson looped the 13T in turns 3 & 4. The first official lap saw Troy Dowty’s 17T, the 28B of Rick Bradley, Brandon Fisher’s 25 and the 6 of Dan Markham the top 4. Fisher passed Bradley for second on lap 2. A big pile-up on lap 3 collected Ian Roschewski’s 2, the 48J of Nick Beckman, Neil Pella’s 3N and the 2C of Dave Carter. Ryan Gilland moved up to fourth on the restart in the 46 and advanced to second the next time around. Gilland wasted no time, grabbing the lead on lap 7. A big traffic jam happened the next time around as Bradley, Kyle Gannon, Troy Dowty, Jackson and Tanner Dowty all came to a halt in turns 3 & 4. At that point it was Gilland, Fisher, the 41 of Adam Wasserman and Brint Lemke’s 26L. Lemke moved up to second a lap after the restart. Lemke took the lead from Gilland temporarily with 8 to go but the pass was called back when Jackson spun out again, this time in turns 1 & 2. Wasserman again got past Gilland for the lead with 3 to go as Ben Becher put the B4 into fourth. The battle for the lead continued until Gilland got first place back on the final lap. The top 4 were Gilland, Wasserman, Fisher and Becher.

He stated “That was a really good race between Adam and me! It came down to the wire and I’m glad there weren’t too many more laps because I don’t know if I could have held onto the lead. I kept seeing Adam’s bumper and it was kind of messing with my head a little bit. I tried to just hit my marks and not mess up and spin my tires”. Ryan’s sponsors include Burrow’s Tracts and Real Estate, JTR Logistics, Lincoln Winelectric, Stone Cold Engines, Ironwood Builders and Paul Scholl Construction.

Ryan Kitchen jumped from the fourth spot on the starting grid of the Twin Rivers IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Main to put the 21 into first place on lap 1 followed by Dan Nekolite’s 22D, the 1B of Brandon Horton and Tim Hilfiker in the 20. Cole Vanderheiden passed Hilfiker on lap 2, putting the 15V into fourth. Vanderheiden moved to third on lap 5, sending Horton back to the fourth position. Lap 7 saw Josh Riggins get past Horton for fourth in the 14J. Riggins passed Vanderheiden two laps later. Riggins got around Nekolite for third on lap 10. Hilfiker spun out in turn 4 on lap 13, erasing Kitchen’s 5+ second lead and making the top 4 Kitchen, Riggins, Vanderheiden and the 5 of Stu Snyder. Riggins snagged the lead with  laps to go. Snyder moved to third the next time around and advanced to second with 4 to go. Riggins began to check out and the top 4 remained unchanged to the checkered flag. Riggins took the victory with Snyder second Kitchen third and Vanderheiden rounding out the top 4.

This was Riggins’ second career win at Eagle Raceway. Josh related “We really had a rocket tonight and I’m so excited about it. The funny this is that last week we ran here and got fifth. I said ‘Hey, we’ve got something here’ and I’ve been telling everybody all week like family members and everyone that they’d better come to the races because we’re going to win this week. My aunt came, and others. I didn’t change a thing on the car from last week because it was really dialed in. I’m just super excited about it. It’s really nice to get lucky like that. The car is certainly fast and I’m capable of putting really good laps together. Part of it is when you get so many good cars out here it’s very hard to pick your way through them. It’s just tough because there isn’t a slow car in the pits. I need to thank my grandpa for all of his help. Also, BNSF Railroad for letting me push wheels at the shop to make some money”. Josh’s sponsors include Goodcents, Pro Restaurant Group, Harry’s Wonder Bar, Piedmont and Venue.
