Roth, Kohl, Zoubek, Thornton & Martin win during Diggin’ in the Dirt night

Roth, Kohl, Zoubek, Thornton & Martin win during Diggin’ in the Dirt night

by Greg Soukup

Despite heavy overnight rainfall, the crack Eagle Raceway track prep crew gave the drivers and a good-sized crowd the opportunity to enjoy some racing as Diggin’ in the Dirt night was presented by Colby’s Candy and Froggy 98.

There were no major incidents in the preliminary action.

Ken Eckhoff’s #5, Jack Prall III’s 44, the 7V of Adam Vrbka and Scott Bivens in the S56 led the field at the end of the first circuit of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified feature. Vrbka passed Prall III for second and Joe Feyen put the 25X into fourth on lap 2. Randy Fox jumped all the way up to third the next lap in his 09RX with Bivens holding onto fourth. Shawn Harker passed Bivens the next time around and the 40 was fourth. Bivens stopped at the top of 1 & 2 on lap 5 for the first caution of the race. Gary Saathoff cracked the top 4 on lap 6 in the #96. The first few spots were jumbled when Feyen took over the lead, Harker moved to second and Saathoff advanced to third on lap 7. Vrbka took fourth on lap 8. Feyen and another racer got together on lap 9 for another slowing of the racing action. That made the top 4 Harker, Saathoff, Vrbka and the 14T of Trent Roth. Roth passed Vrbka on lap 10 but Dion Kovar’s 18, the 33 of Jeremy Noonan and Gary Joens Jr.’s 68J came together and stopped in 3 & 4. Roth took third on lap 13, moved up to second with 4 to go and snagged the lead from Harker with 3 circuits remaining. The top 4 at the finish were Roth, Harker, Saathoff and Vrbka.

This was both Roth’s first race and first victory at Eagle Raceway this year as his home track was rained out. “The track was rough, but a good one considering the rain. Razor makes a great chassis though, and we just worked our way up from 12th” Roth said. Roth’s sponsors include Razor Chassis, Roth Racing, Midwest BBQ, HyVee, Ziebart and Cuba Construction.

Up next was the main event for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. The top 4 on lap 1 were Kevin Zeitner’s 60, the 22 of Nick Beckman, Jason Kohl in the 27 and Rob Brown in the 42. Beckman got past Zeitner on lap 4 and John Cain put the #44 into fourth the same lap. Kohl and Zeitner fought over the second spot for a while with Kohl taking it on lap 8, Zeitner regaining the position on lap 10 before Kohl made the pass stick the next circuit. Cain passed Zeitner with 6 to go and Kohl took over the lead with 4 left. The checkered flag saw Kohl, Beckman, Cain and Zeitner the top 4.

This was Kohl’s first victory at America’s Home Track in this, his 9th year racing. He stated “I came here to have a good time, and we’re having a GREAT time, and making a whole lot of friends. I want to thank Roger for putting the time in to get us racing. I also want to thank all of my sponsors for making it possible to do this every week”.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds moved to the track for their A Feature next. Mike Densberger’s 81 fell out on lap 1 and was towed to the pits. The first official lap saw Clint Homan’s 27, the 5S of Bob Zoubek, Matt Boucher in the 5B and the 13 of Dave Deterding out front. Justin Wulf passed Deterding to put the 86 into fourth on lap 2. Jeremy Leiting’s 21J spun in turn 2 on lap 3 and collected Rik Gropp’s V45. Deterding went to the pits before the restart with damage to his right front. Wulf also headed pit-side, putting the 21H of Shane Hiatt into fourth. Hiatt took advantage of the restart to jump up to second as Johnny Saathoff grabbed fourth in the 96J and Zoubek passed Homan for the lead. Roger Hadan passed Saathoff on lap 7. Anthony Roth spun the 60 in turn 2 with 6 laps left. Saathoff and Hadan swapped positions with Saathoff taking fourth on the restart, Hadan grabbing it the next time around and Saathoff snagging the spot for good after another lap. The top 4 were Zoubek, Homan, Hiatt and Saathoff.

“This was my first win anywhere this year. We’ve been having big problems all year. I got a good start, moved to the top where nobody was running and found a smooth line. The track was rough, but blading it at intermission did some good. I’m glad that Roger did all he could to let us get the racing in” Zoubek related. Zoubek’s sponsors include Klein Construction, Goldfus Shock & Fab, City Slickers Bar and Grill and Garrison Law.

Tyler Vukonich in the 21TV, Larry Cronin’s 5, the 8 of Sarah Cronin and Tim Horsham’s 3 led the first lap of the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact finale. Evan Hrabik put the 19X into fourth on lap 2. Larry Cronin took the lead on lap 3 as Horsham jumped up to second. Brandon Thornton moved into fourth in the 21T on lap 4 and advanced to third the next time around as Horsham took the lead, but Vukonich got loose coming out of turn 4 and collected the 21R of Ramsey Meyer. Hrabik went to the pits during the caution. The top 4 at that time were Larry Cronin, Horsham, Thornton and the 23 of Ole Olsen. Thornton passed Horsham with 5 to go. With just 3 laps remaining Luke Jackson’s 66 stopped in turn 2 and Larry Cronin dropped out of the contest. That put Thornton out front, Horsham second, Olsen third and the 13M of Mitchel Wachter fourth. Matt Moyer passed Wachter to put the 29 into third on the final lap. The checkered flag saw Thornton win, Olsen second, Moyer third and Horsham holding on for fourth.

“I want to thank my wife and kids for letting me work on the car all night last night. She brought the kids to the kart races at Little E so I could. A huge thanks to Matt Moyer and Tom Hamer for working all night with me so I could race tonight. This was my first win in over 2 years; it’s great to finally get another. Tell Roger I said thanks for all he did to let us get the races in” Thornton said. Thornton’s sponsors include CW Woodworking and Full Blown Chaos.

Richard Weers in the 55, Brandon Horton’s 1B, the 14 of Joey Danley and the 14J of Joe Miller 2 were the top 4 after the first circuit of the Mud in America IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature. Adam Gullion passed Miller to put the 91 into fourth on lap 2 but Mike Boston spun the 51 in turn 2 to bring out the yellow flag. Horton used the restart to grab the lead but Shon Pointer looped the 20P in turn 2. Gene Ackland put the 14G into fourth on lap 3 as Horton again moved to first. Ackland got past Danley the next lap. Danley bicycled in 3 on lap 5 before coming to a halt in turn 4 as the yellow lights came on again. That moved the 45H of Mark Pace in fourth. Jason Martin took advantage of the restart to pass Pace for fourth and took over the third spot the next time around. 1 more lap saw Ackland and Martin move up to first and second. Gullion advanced to third on lap 10. Martin got past Ackland on lap 13 and 2 laps later Trevor Grossenbacher cracked the top 4 in the 77T. Chase Weiler’s 21W topped in turn 2 with 7 laps remaining and Grossenbacher headed to the pits. The top 4 at the time were Martin, Ackland, Gullion and Pace. Tadd Holliman passed Pace on the restart, putting the 2N into fourth. Horton stopped in the pit entrance with a flat right rear tire with 4 laps remaining. The race was called on time on the restart when 2 cars got together in turns 1 and 2. Martin got the victory with Ackland, Gullion and Holliman rounding out the top 4.

Martin’s 4th win of the 2014 season came after starting in the 12th spot. “I’m just glad that we got to race. We tried something completely different tonight because I want to be the best that I can be when it comes time for the Racesaver IMCA Supernationals in August. I got second last year, but I want to win it all this time!” Martin said. Martin’s sponsors include Trucks Plus and Midwest Linings.

Next Saturday night will see Freedom Fest, presented by Mud in America & Budweiser. Front gates open and hot laps start at 5:30.
