Roth, Hansen, Densberger, Cronin & Danley bring home wins during Dirt Thunder Night

By Greg Soukup

A large crowd turned out for Dirt Thunder Night, presented by Froggy 98 and Comfort Suites Saturday night. The weather was hot, as was the racing action on the high banks of Eagle Raceway.

2 racers had major problems in the preliminary events. Allyn Shively went for a ride in the first heat for the Sam’s Club IMCA Sports Compacts as his #4 rolled over in turns 1 and 2. Later, Dale Hoyle’s 48 got sideways and was t-boned by the 18 of Tim LaPointe, sending Hoyle flipping in turn 2. Neither driver was seriously injured, but their nights had ended.

Dave Coberly’s 4U2 led the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature with Josh Kennel’s 71K, the 67D of Jason Trent and Mary Lenz in the 17 close behind. Lap 2 saw Trent and Lenz drop out of the top 4 and were replaced by the 14T of Trent Roth and Shawn Harker’s 40. Roth moved up to second the next time around with Benji Legg taking over fourth after another lap in his 25B. Legg moved to third and Roth grabbed the lead the next circuit. Legg moved to second on lap 6 and Harker passed Coberly the next lap to regain fourth before advancing to third after another lap, moving Kennell to fourth. Gary Saathoff put the 96 into fourth on lap 13 for the final change in the top 4. Roth won, Legg was second, Harker third and Saathoff fourth.

This was Roth’s 3rd victory of the 2014 season. “I couldn’t be happier! The track was really good, and had a high side that was like a rail. That’s where I like it!! I want to thank and say Happy Birthday to my sis. Also, thanks to my dad, brother and crew for making it possible for me to do this” he stated. Roth’s sponsors include Razor Chassis, Roth Racing, Wild West BBQ, HyVee, Ziebart, Cuba Construction and R & R Sandblasting and Painting.

The initial circuit Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature was led by Tyler Saathoff’s 16T, the 13F of Chad Fegley, Ben Becher in the B4 and the 55N of Luke Nicholson. Mike Hansen moved the 94 into fourth on lap 2. Becher’s racer went up in smoke on lap 3, putting the 23 of Mark McKinney into fourth. Fegley drove into the infield 1 lap after the restart after contact with another car. That moved Tim Kozak’s 29 into fourth, McKinney third and Hansen second behind Saathoff. Russ Specht passed Kozak on lap 6, putting the 26X into fourth. Hansen moved to the lead on lap 10 as Justin Busboom moved the 62 into fourth. McKinney advanced to second with 7 to go and Busboom moved to third 2 laps later. Roy Armstrong’s 6R suffered a fire with 4 laps left. Busboom passed McKinney with 3 laps remaining making the final top 4 Hansen, Busboom, McKinney and Specht.

This marked Hansen’s 3rd win on the season. “The track was really smooth tonight with a really good top lane. I was kind of surprised to find myself in the lead so early, and it kinda scared me. I want to welcome my new sponsor Big G Carburetors out of Kansas City. Also thanks to Suzanne for the t-shirts and coozies” related Hansen. Hansen’s sponsors include Big G Carburetors, Kecklers and Creative Edge.

The first lap of the Kaplan University IMCA Modified A Main saw Aaron Pella’s 3A out front followed by the 3W of Stacey Wilhelm, Chad Andersen’s 8C and the 11N of Nathan Landauer. Mike Densberger passed Landauer on lap 2, making the 81 fourth. Pella hit the turn 2 wall hard the next time around as the yellow flag flew. That made the top 4 Andersen, Wilhelm, Densberger and the 60IV of Anthony Roth. Densberger moved to second on the restart. Phil Penney spun his 21P in turns 1 and 2 on lap 4 for another caution. Densberger used the restart to snag the lead with Clint Homan moving the 27 into fourth. Roth again took fourth on lap 6. Jared Deterding spun his 13J on lap 11 for yet another slowing of the action. Bob Zoubek vaulted his 5S up to third on the restart with Roger Hadan taking over fourth in the 4. Hadan and Roth both passed Zoubek with 7 to go for third and fourth with Roth taking third later that circuit. The top 4 at the checkers were Densberger, Andersen, Roth and Hadan.

Densberger’s second 2014 victory came after starting in the 6th position. “I need to thank the fans for their support weekly; we couldn’t do this without them. We hit it good tonight on the setup, and the track was fun and fast! I owe a lot to my car owner Steve Miller. Thanks to all my sponsors for all that they do for us. Also, I can’t thank my crew chief Jake, my sister, my fiancé and parents for all of their support. And I don’t want to forget my neighbor Rowan” Densberger related. Densberger’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Shocked by DSR, Neemann Refuse, Adamz K-9 Cleanup, Densberger Farms, Cutting Corner and Harris Decals.

The completion of the first lap of the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact Feature saw Rick Hollandsworth out front in his 35H, Larry Cronin in the 30L, the 82B of Kurt Beckstrom and Nick Jensen in the 48J. Mitchell Wachter’s 13M stopped at the top of turns 3 & 4 on lap 2 for a caution period. Cronin grabbed the lead on the restart and lap 4 saw Justin Olsen’s 14J jump all the way to second. Tim Horsham put his #3 into fourth on lap 5 and moved to third the next time around. Olsen slowed with 6 to go as Matt Moyer jumped up to third in the 29. Moyer advanced to second the next lap with Jensen taking over 3rd and Horsham rounding out the top 4.

“The car ran really great and handled even better tonight. Honestly, I expected Matt to pass me, but I’m glad he didn’t. Thanks to my racing crew for their help every week” Cronin said. Cronin’s sponsors include Larry’s Auto Parts and Moonlight Ranch.

Kyle Flodman’s 7K, the 14 of Joey Danley, Brandon Horton in the 1B and Adam Gullion’s 91 were the first 4 back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the Mud In America Racesaver ICMA Sprint Car A Main. Gullion and Horton swapped positions the next 2 laps. Horton and Gullion made contact on lap 10, causing Gullion to do a 360 degree spin and bring out the yellow flag before being sent to the rear. Horton was also sent to the back of the pack for his involvement in the incident. That made the top 4 Flodman, Danley, Shayle Bade’s 03 and the 51 of Mike Boston. Flodman went extremely high in turn 4 with 8 laps remaining, giving Danley the lead. Flodman (possibly suffering with a broken Jacob’s ladder) ended up doing a 360 degree spin the next lap in turn 2 and the yellow lights were again lit. That made the top 4 Danley, Boston, Bade and the 18 of Terry Richards. Richards passed Bade on the restart and Doug Lovegrove’s #1 followed him into fourth the next lap. Gullion slowed in turn 2 with 3 to go to slow the action yet again. Lovegrove moved to second 1 lap after the restart. With 1 to go Nick Bryan’s 52 stopped at the top of turn 4 to set up a green, white, checkered finish. Boston got back past Lovegrove to make the final top 4 Danley, Boston, Lovegrove and Richards.

This marked 2 victories in Danley’s rookie season in a sprint car. “Flodman ran a great race, and I couldn’t have passed him until he messed up. But, then I got the lead and held on to take it home” Danley said. Danley’s sponsors include Bellevue University, Nissen Hardwood Floors, Super Saver, Automotive Services, Clean Rite Sweeping, JPS Investments and Mark Burch Motorsports.
