Roth, Armstrong, Sobbing, Bohlen and Martin winners at Party Like A Rock Star Night

by Greg Soukup

Mother Nature decided to give the teams and fans at Eagle Raceway a little liquid love Saturday night. So, that brought about the very first Rockin’ Sunday on the high banks. Mild temperatures and sunny skies greeted everyone as they filed in for Party Like A Rock Star Night, presented by Kaplan University and the Nebraska Lottery Sunday.

The preliminary races were all run with no serious incidents.

The NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds were up first and Bob Ruisinger’s #7, the 81 of James Hopkins, Roger Sluka in the 5S and the 96 of Gary Saathoff were the top four on lap #1. Saathoff jumped to second on lap 2 and Sluka also passes Hopkins to hold onto third. Both Saathoff and Sluka then got past Ruisinger the next time around to grab first and second as Gunnar Pike moved his #25 into fourth. Lap 4 saw Pike move to third momentarily, but Ruisinger regained the spot before the end of the circuit. Pike took and held the position the next time around. 1 more lap saw Trent Roth put the 14T into fourth. The next lap Brandon Spanjer came to a halt in turns 1 & 2. Roth took over third on the restart and Benji Legg put the 25B into fourth the next lap. Spanjer spun in turn 1 again with 6 to go. On the restart Roth grabbed the second spot. 2 laps later Legg took over third. 3 laps were left when Roth pulled into first. Legg advanced to second with 2 to go as Mark Leiting moved the 20M into fourth. At the checkers it was Roth, Legg, Saathoff and Leiting. However, Legg neglected to go to the tech area and was disqualified. That put Sluka into the fourth spot.

Roth’s second 2015 win at Eagle came from the 7th starting position. Roth said “A slick track is a racer’s track and makes for a fun race. There’s always good competition here and it’s always a challenge to get a win”. Roth’s sponsors include Lee Ann Farms, Razor Chassis, R & R Sandblasting and Painting Ziebart and Cuba Construction.

Sydney Yost in the 20, Khrysta Stransky’s 39, the 69 of Kenny Roberts and Brett Saathoff’s 11B led the pack at the end of lap 1 for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Saathoff moved past Roberts for third on lap 2 and then passed Stransky for second before the lap was finished. Saathoff grabbed the lead the next lap as Yost spun in turn 1, moving the 97M of Mark Saathoff into fourth. Tyler Saathoff jumped all the way up to third the next time around in the 16T and Mark Saathoff held onto fourth. Lap 7 saw Roberts move into first as Adam Armstrong cracked the top 4, putting the 6A into fourth. Tyler Saathoff moved to second on lap 9 with Armstrong following him into third after another lap and Mark McKinney moved the #23 into fourth. Armstrong advanced to second after another circuit and took the lead the following lap. Ben Becher’s engine let go with 6 laps remaining and the B4 slowed to a stop in the infield in a ball of fire. The crack Eagle Fire and Rescue squad extinguished the fire and Becher was okay. At the end it was Armstrong, Tyler Saathoff, Kenny Roberts and Mark McKinney the top 4. Saathoff was disqualified though, putting Mark Saathoff into fourth.

This marked Armstrong’s 7th Eagle Raceway victory in 2015 and was won from inside the fourth row. “The track was slick tonight, so you had to be cautious and careful. I want to thank Roger for getting the races in after all the rain we had yesterday. All of us racers appreciate it” related Armstrong. Armstrong’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Hummer Contracting, Ron Fox and Sons Motorsports, Scat Cranks and Icon Pistons.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modified A Main was led by Bob Zoubek’s 33Z, the 60IV of Anthony Roth, Justin Wulf’s 86 and the 27 of Clint Homan. Homan passed Wulf for third on lap 2 and Chad Andersen also got around Wulf the next lap, putting his 8C into fourth. Andersen moved up to third on lap 6. Lap 7 saw Roth and Shane Hiatt’s 21H come together at the pit entrance. That made the top 4 Zoubek, Andersen, Jesse Sobbing’s 99 and Wulf. Andersen took over first on the restart as Johnny Saathoff moved his 96J into fourth. Sobbing moved up to second after 2 more laps. Jordan Grabouski’s #30 took over fourth on lap 10 and moved up to third 2 laps later. 1 more circuit was in the books when Sobbing took over the lead. There were 6 laps remaining when Pat Wheeler spun the #22 in turns 1 and 2. Grabouski moved to second on the restart. Jared Hoefelman passed Saathoff for fourth with 3 to go in his #15H, but Saathoff retook the spot the next lap. The top 4 were Sobbing, Grabouski, Andersen and Saathoff.

Sobbing started in the 10th spot before notching his second 2015 Eagle Raceway win. “I’d much rather have the track dry than muddy and rough any day!” Sobbing stated. Sobbing’s sponsors include Home Pride/Luke Cochran, Jet Racing, Friesen Chevrolet and Afco Shocks.

Next were the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts. One of the competitors lost a tire on the start, bringing out a caution. Tim Horsham spun the #3 in turn 3 on the restart. When a lap was finally in the books it was Jeremy Bohlen’s 10J, the 10K of Kyle Owen, Spencer Pavey III in the 32 and the 13K of Kevin Staack the top 4. Horsham slowed dramatically on lap 4 for another yellow. Owen jumped the start and was put back 2 spots to fourth for the restart. Owen moved back to third on the restart and moving Staack to fourth. The next lap Tom Powell moved the 18R into fourth. The top 4 remained the same through to the end of the race with Bohlen winning, Pavey III second, Owen third and Powell fourth.

Bohlen’s win came from the outside front row starting spot and was his second of 2015. “Dry tracks don’t bother me at all. It was a fun track and nothing got torn up in any of the classes” he related. Bohlen’s sponsors include K R K Trucking, Bohlen Farm Service, Don McCown Trucking and Ramold Custom Haying.

Joe Miller’s 78 was the first back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car A Feature followed by Nick Bryan’s 52, the 03 of Shayle Bade and Ryan King’s 93 close behind. Bade passed Bryan for second on lap 2. Bade vaulted to first the next time around as Jason Martin took over fourth. Martin moved to third and then second the next lap. Lap 6 saw Jason Danley move his 4X into fourth then move to third on lap 8. The yellow flag flew on lap 9 when the 18 of Terry Richards and Mark Pace’s 1X looped it in turn 1. Martin passed Bade for the lead on the restart as Trevor Grossenbacher cracked the top 4 in his #35. Boyd Peterson’s 57B spun in turn 2 for another caution. Grossenbacher moved up to third on the restart and Joey Danley put the 14 into fourth with 8 to go. Grossenbacher passed Bade for second with 6 to go for the final change in the top 4. The final top 4 were Martin, Grossenbacher, Bade and Joey Danley.

Starting in 7th seemed to be an advantage as that was also Martin’s starting position. Martin stated “I like a slick track, because it takes a real driver to not spin their tire. In fact, that’s the reason I’m here today; because I hoped it would be like this. It’s good to finally get everything to stay together and for the engine to run right. I don’t know how many engines we’ve tried before finally getting this one to run”. Martin’s sponsors include Trucks Plus, Midwest Linings, Werner Cycle Works and EMI.

This coming Saturday night will be the Rockin’ in the USA Shootout-Season Finale presented by Sam’s Club. There will be a banner contest during intermission.
