Richards, Jackson, Danley, Borgman & Grabouski are victorious at Eagle Raceway’s Season Opener

By Greg Soukup

Mother Nature may have caused the Icebreaker Challenge to cancel last week, but she relented this week allowing A1 Iron Corp. and Nebraska Lottery to present Start your Engines- Season Opener last evening at Eagle Raceway. The large crowd that braved the cool temperatures were rewarded with 16 heats, a C Feature and 5 B Features preceding the A Mains for each class. Wheel to wheel action the whole night was the answer to every race fan’s prayers after a too long, too cold winter.

There were no serious incidents in the preliminary races.

First up for the A’s were the A1 Iron Corp. IMCA Stock Cars Lap 1 saw the 68 of Damon Richards, Cade Richards in the 1R, Kyle Vanover’s19 and the 84 of Benji Legg out front. Action was slowed on lap 2 for debris on the front stretch. Legg passed Vanover on lap 4 to take third. Jordan Grabouski passed both Vanover and Legg on lap 6 to grab third. The next lap Cade Richards passed Damon Richards for the lead as Vanover again moved to fourth. Lap 10 saw Grabouski advance to second. The yellow flag flew again with 5 to go for debris. Vanover moved up to third with 4 to go. Eric Rempel’s 21 slammed hard into the implement tire guarding the pit entrance and ended up on its side. That brought out the red flag while the tow crew righted the car and towed it to the pits. Rempel was not seriously injured. The final change in the top 4 came on the last lap as Vanover got past Grabouski to second. The final top 4 were Cade Richards, Vanover, Grabouski and Damon Richards.

Cade is racing both a sportmod and the stock car this year. This win followed up his first ever victory at Eagle which came in the sportmod. I commented on the battle he had at the start with Damon Richards and he replied “Yeah. I was just kind of biding my time because I couldn’t get around him, but once I got underneath him and got the position, I was fine. We’ve got the car working really well on these high banked tracks. We’re really improving and getting it closer to where we want it, so hopefully we can keep building off my 2 wins this week and keep it going” I asked if he liked driving the stock car or the sportmod better and he answered “The stock car is better right now because we have it so close, but they’re both really close right now The sportmod needs a little adjusting and the stock car needs just a touch more drive. We’ll have them both figured out by next week”. Cade’s sponsors include  Kosmos Racing, Filley Powder Coating, SCAT Cranks, CP Carillo, Qualcast, Bob Harris Enterprises, Billstein Shocks, Swift springs, J & K Trucking, McLaughlin Masonry, Thingstad Trucking, College View Auto Sales, RaceTech Info, Dynamic Drivelines, Richards Machine and ProCut Tires.

Next on tap was the A Main for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Tyler Jackson grabbed the lead on lap 1 in the 13T followed by Kirk Casteel’s 18K, the 41 of Adam Wasserman and Mike Hansen in the 94. Wasserman got by Casteel on lap 2 for second. Brint Lemke’s 26L stopped at the top of turn 4 on lap 4 for a caution. Jeff Ware moved to fourth on the restart. Christa Stransky’s 39 stopped in turn 1 on lap 5 to slow the action again. Brendon Stigge put the #69 into fourth on the restart but made contact with the 18K of Casteel, causing them both to slow and putting Ware back in fourth. Hansen moved to second with 2 to go and Ware also advanced to third. That made the top 4 Jackson, Hansen, Ware and Wasserman.

This was Tyler’s first hobby stock win at Eagle. “It feels really damn good! It was the plan from the get-go to start on the pole and hold them off the whole way. I’ve been so close a lot of times, and it really feels great to be here. I love racing here every Saturday night. I have to thank my parents and everybody who helps out”. Tyler’s sponsors include Horizon Spray Solutions and Potts Tire Repair.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified A. The first lap saw Jordan Grabouski’s 30, the 8C of Chad Andersen, John Saathoff in the 96J and the 6 of Ryan Jenkins the top 4. Jenkins passed Saathoff on lap 2 for third. Mike Densberger’s 81 stopped in turn 4 and the yellow lights came on in the corners. Jenkins used the restart to get past Andersen for second. The 3T of Nate Thompson stopped in turn 4 on lap 5 for another caution. Lap 6 saw another caution as a car stopped in turns 1 & 2. There were just 5 laps remaining when the 5S of Bob Zoubek stopped at the top of turn 4. Andersen regained the second spot with 4 to go but lost the spot back to Jenkins the following time around. The final top 4 were Grabouski, Jenkins, Andersen and Saathoff.

Kicking off the 2021 season with a win shows the talent that Jordan has. “It helped starting a little closer to the front, but once I got in the lead it felt like I had a good rhythm. There were a lot of cautions, but hats off to my crew and sponsors. Thanks to them it was a fun race”. I asked if he was planning on being at Eagle every week with both the modified and the stock car. He replied “That’s the goal! We’ll just see how the season goes”. Jordan’s sponsors include Friesen Chevrolet, CBD Racing Shocks, Kaiser Manufacturing, GRT Race Cars, Mook Trucking, Wojo Painting, Sybesma Graphics, Stone Oilfield Service, Hergott Farms, Performance Bodies and Dirt Defender.

The Modern Real Estate IMCA Sportmods came out on the track next for their A Feature. Dana Deeke led lap 1 in his #36 with Matt Andrews’ 22, the 76 of Lance Borgman and Tyler Nerud’s 5T close behind. Andrews grabbed the lead on lap 3 with Borgman following him into second the next time around. Nerud moved up to third the following lap. One more lap was in the books when Borgman jumped into the lead. Derek Hall put the 44D into fourth the next lap. Just 7 laps remained when Nerud advanced to second. The final change in the top 4 came with 3 to go when Brandon Spanjer put the 19XX into fourth making the top 4 Borgman, Nerud, Andrews and Spanjer.

Borgman doesn’t make the trip to Eagle many times a year, but when he does, he does very well. Tonight, he started 6th and made his way forward quickly. “We were racing pretty hard at the start with 3 cars fighting for the lead. A couple of the leaders slipped up a little bit and I got underneath them and kind of set sail”. I mentioned that I seemed to always be interviewing him the first couple of races every year and he laughed and said “Yeah. We like to come up when it’s draw and redraw because if you don’t run weekly you have to start way in the back. I do like the way that the running order got changed though putting the sportmods a little deeper in the night because it really helps for a lot better racing surface for us. I have to thank my Dad, Zach and everybody that comes out to help, Without those people it would be too easy to just stay home instead of going racing. I want to thank everybody, right down to the fans because without them we wouldn’t be doing this”. Lance’s sponsors include Hergott Farms, Penner Insurance and Coordsen Farms.

The last A Main of the night was for the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprints. The action was slowed on lap one when the 97 of Nate Johnson came to a halt in turns 1 & 2. Shon Pointer pulled to the infield after stopping and several tries to get him restarted failed. Adam Gullion’s 91, the 47 of Cody Ledger, Trevor Grossenbacher and the 4W of Nate Weiler led the first official lap. Tyler Drueke put his #12 into fourth on lap 3. Grossenbacher passed Ledger with 10 to go to snag second but Ledger regained the spot the next time around as Joey Danley put the 14 into fourth. Drueke again moved to second the next lap and took over the top spot 2 laps later with Danley moving up to third. Danley kept advancing moving up to second with 2 to go and overtaking Drueke on the final circuit. The top 4 were Danley, Drueke, Gullion and Ledger.

This is Joey’s 8th year racing a sprint car. “That was a blast!! That’s probably the most fun race I’ve ever been a part of. We started kind of deep, and when I got up to fifth, I was watching those guys battle and they messed around so much that we caught up to them. Then I found the rubber in 3 and 4 and they didn’t so I snookered them a little bit. We’re going to try to be here every week this year and run for points. We started that off pretty good tonight”. Joey’s sponsors include Empire Fencing, The Wave, Cleanright Street Sweeping, Nissen Hardwood Floors, Russell Shoulders Race Engines and Onyx Wraps.

The racing continues next Saturday as Hotsy and Empire Fence present May Day Madness. All 5 classes will be in action with the Duros Dent Works Sprint cars, Nebraska Lottery Modifieds, A1 Iron Corp. Stock Cars, Modern Real Estate Sportmods and Valentino’s Hobby Stocks.

Front gates open at 5:00. Adult admission is $12, youths 6-12 are just $5 and children 5 and under are free.
