Richards, Gullion, Roth, Andersen & Cronin are victorious for Jr Fan Club Night

By Greg Soukup

It was a hot one for Junior Fan Club Night, sponsored by Colby Ridge on Saturday evening, with sunny skies and a strong southerly breeze. The crowd who braved the heat was treated to a great racing surface, thanks to Mother Nature having stopped blessing the facility with her liquid sunshine. The car count was down slightly this week; only 123 teams pulled into the pits, but the racing was great from start to finish, with three and four-wide action the rule, rather than the exception.

The only significant happening in the preliminary action came when Boyd Peterson flipped the #57B Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car in hot laps. He was not seriously hurt, but the team was unable to repair the car to run the B Feature.

On the restart of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature, Dana Deeke spun the #36, causing a pile-up. The second attempt at a restart saw Jeremy Noonan loop the 33 in nearly the same spot. As the racers finally put a lap in the books, James Hines in the 31R, Joe Feyen’s 25X, Sean Manning in the X52 and Trent Roth in the 14T were the first four at the flag stand. Roth moved up to third on lap 2 and the next circuit saw Feyen advance to the lead and Roth take over second. James Klinkheisel’s 7W took over fourth after another lap as Roth passed Feyen for the lead. 2 more laps saw Dion Kovar put the #18 in third as Klinkheisel retained fourth. Lap 9, Gary Saathoff moved into fourth in the 96 and then took third with 9 to go, moving Kovar back to fourth. The final top four were Roth, Feyen, Saathoff and Kovar.

This was the first Eagle Raceway victory of the year for Roth, and came from the 7th starting spot. “I was surprised when I got the lead after 3 laps. The track was pretty racy tonight, but you had to get up on the wheel. Thanks to all of my fans for always supporting me” he said. Roth’s sponsors include Razor Chassis, Roth Racing, Speedway Crate Engines, Total Eclipse Salon, Cuba Construction, R & R Sandblasting and Painting and Wild West Barbeque.

Rick Bradley’s 28B led the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A with Chad Fegley’s 13F, the 55N of Luke Nicholson and the 69 of Kenny Roberts rounding out the top 4. Fegley snagged the lead from Bradley on lap 5. Damon Richards put the #67 into fourth and took over third on lap 7 as Roy Armstrong cracked the top 4 in the 6R. Armstrong passed Richards with 10 to go and grabbed second the next time around. Richards followed him into third after another circuit. Richards passed Armstrong with 6 to go. The only caution of the contest came with 2 laps to go when Mariah Bade spun her 03+2 in turn 4 and retired to the infield. That set up a green, white, checkered finish. Richards and Armstrong battled for the second spot after the restart, but the battle ended up being for the win as Fegley suffered a flat tire. Richards snagged the spot for good on the last lap. That made the final top four Richards, Armstrong, Bradley and Roberts.

Richards’ third Eagle Raceway victory on the season came from the 9th starting position. He stated “The track was really racy on both the top and bottom, and you could make the middle work too. I was really surprised on that caution to find myself running second. There is no doubt that this was Chad’s race, especially since my car has been stumbling on restarts, because the carb keeps loading up”. Richards’ sponsors are Charger Chassis and Demon Decals.

The end of lap one for the Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds saw the 25! of Trevor Baker, Aaron Pella’s 3A, the 60IV of Anthony Roth and Johnny Saathoff’s 96J the top four. Roth moved past Pella on lap 2 as Roger “Chevy” Hadan cracked the top 4 when he passed Saathoff for the position. Hadan moved up to third the next lap and Chad Andersen put the 8C into fourth. Baker spun in turn 2 on lap 7 and Roth was set back 4 spots for contact with Baker. At that time the top 4 were Hadan, Andersen, Saathoff and the 21H of Shane Hiatt. Andersen took the lead with 12 to go. Ashley Schaaf’s 95 spun at the top of turns 3 & 4 the next lap for another caution period. As the field tried to restart, Schaaf stopped in turn 3 and was then sent to the pits. Saathoff snagged second on the restart. Roth moved back to fourth with 9 to go. Hiatt repassed him two laps later, but Roth got the position back after another 2 circuits. Hadan grabbed second the next time around and both Roth and Hiatt got past Saathoff making the top four Andersen, Hadan, Roth and Hiatt.

Eagle Raceway win #3 this year came from Andersen starting in 11th. “I definitely had to work for this one. I made a last minute decision to make a change in the car, and it seemed to work. This was an awesome track, but you really had to drive the cushion and hit it right. Thanks to Roger for the great track tonight” said Andersen. Andersen’s sponsors include Nebraska’s Best, Lawnsmith, Flat Foot Trucking, Southern Transport and the D-Sign Shop.

Next was the A Main for the Mountain Dew Kick Start IMCA Sport Compacts. Thomas Miracle’s 28, Sarah Cronin’s 8, Steven Rol in the 33 and the 13BS of Justin Callender led the field after lap 1. Cronin snagged the lead on lap 4. Larry Cronin put the 70SS into fourth the next time around and took over third after another circuit. Tim Horsham moved the #3 into fourth with 8 laps remaining as Larry Cronin moved up to second. Horsham passed Larry Cronin the next time around as Spencer Pavey III took over fourth. Pavey got past Larry Cronin with 5 to go. Larry Cronin slowed dramatically on the last lap, falling to 7th. That made the final top four Sarah Cronin, Pavey III, Horsham and the 88S of Scott Spellmeier.

This was Sarah’s first Eagle Raceway win ever. “I thought I was lapped; I couldn’t believe it when I found out I was in the lead. It was scary to be there!! My only other top four came when I got a second my rookie year. I want to thank my dad and Cole for getting my race car where it is now” related Sarah. Her sponsors include Larry’s Auto Recyclers, Moonlight Ranch and George’s Auto Sales.

Jimmy Grasso’s 8G, the 52 of Nick Bryan, Gene Ackland’s 14G and the 03 of Shayle Bade were the leaders of lap 1 for the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars. Bade moved up one spot on each of the next 2 laps. Ackland took over the third spot after another circuit. Lap 5 saw Bade snag the lead as Adam Gullion put the #91 into fourth. Gullion took the third spot on lap 7 and moved to second after 2 more laps were in the books. Clint Benson moved the #100 into fourth the next time around as Grasso spun at the bottom of turn 4. Ackland passed Gullion on the restart, but relinquished the spot back to him the next time around. The following circuit saw Jason Martin jump all of the way into third in his 5X as Ackland retained fourth. Benson passed Ackland the next lap however and held fourth. Shon Pointer looped the 20P on the back stretch with 8 to go. Bade got sideways on the restart, but kept going. The yellow lights had been lit however, and Bade was sent to the rear. That made the top 4 Gullion, Martin, Benson and the #12 of Tyler Drueke. Drueke passed Benson on the restart for third. Grasso again spun with 3 to go, this time on the back stretch. Martin and Drueke exchanged second on the restart lap, with Martin holding it eventually as Ackland moved back into fourth. The final top 4 were Gullion, Martin, Drueke and Ackland.

This was Gullion’s third victory in a row, and came from starting in 8th. “I can’t believe it!! If you told me back when we started this class that I’d win just 2 in a row, I wouldn’t have believed it; let alone 3!!! After the way the year started, I wasn’t sure we could ever get a win. I decided to try the top in turns 1 & 2, because so many were running the bottom. When I got behind Shayle I decided to mimic her line until the yellow. I really felt bad for Shayle. I even went down and told her that she had the fastest car; I don’t think I could have passed her. Then Jason got up to second, and he ran me as clean as anybody ever did. I tell you; the competition in the Racesavers this year is just awesome. It’s hard to believe how far the class has come in just a few years” said Gullion. Gullion’s sponsors include Precise Roofing, Liquid Nitro, Pro Roloffs, Filley Custom Powder Coating, Pro Shocks, Engler, Fuel Safe and Sardeson Racing.
