Pike, Richards, Danley, Roth & Gallagher celebrate wins at Eagle Raceway

By Greg Soukup

Saturday night at Eagle Raceway the word was “Swell”! Party On Night, presented by Budweiser saw ‘swell’ weather; in fact, it was nearly a perfect evening for racing. The large crowd ‘swelled’ the stands with eager race fans and 149 cars ‘swelled’ the pits with anxious race teams, eager to hit the high banks.

There were 2 significant events in the action leading up to the A Features. Michelle Nicholson’s 88 ended up rolling over going into turn 1 at the start of the
ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact heat #1. Jason Miller did an easy roll-over in turn 2 during the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprint B Feature. Neither driver was seriously hurt.

Joe Feyen’s 25X, the 21 of Amber Cook, Braydon Latture in the 14 and the 17 of Mary Lenz led lap 1 of the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Modified finale. Derek Hall jumped up to third in the 44D on lap 2 as Lenz retained fourth. Gunnar Pike passed Lenz on lap 3 to put the 25 into fourth. Hall moved up to second the next lap and Pike also passed Latture the next time around. Lap 7 saw Matt Andrews put the 22 into fourth. Roger Sluka looped the 5S in turns 3 & 4 with 6 to go for a caution. Cook spun out in turns 3 & 4 on the restart. With 4 laps remaining Pike moved up to second but lost the spot back to Hall the next circuit. The top 3 were door handle to door handle as Pike jumped into the lead after another lap. Andrews grabbed second the next time around with Hall fourth and the 7V of Adam Vrbka fourth. Pike brought it home first, Andrews was second but was disqualified in post-race tech for illegal valve springs. That moved Hall to second, Vrbka to third and Shawn Harker’s 40 into fourth.

This was victory #5 for Pike at Eagle Raceway this season. “It was a pretty good one tonight; kind of a fun race. I’d rather get out and lead the whole thing instead of grabbing it late like I did. They were so spread out by the time I got up to the leaders that I was hoping for a caution and one finally came out. I got lucky enough that I could sneak by them on the top” he said. Pike’s sponsors include Larson Motors, Interim Health Care, Sardeson Racing, Taylored Computers, Afco, Driveway Saloon, Grass Assassins and Custom Gun Solutions and Tri-County Rolloffs.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Main saw Tyler Jackson’s 13T, the 12 of Michael Wade, Brooke Fluckiger’s 2B and the 24R of Dillon Richards the top 4 after 1 lap. Fluckiger passed Wade for second on lap 2 and Richards followed her into third the next lap and passed Fluckiger for second on lap 5. Dave Carter put the 2C into fourth on lap 9. Khrysta Stransky’s 39 and the 69 of Kenny Roberts made hard contact at the entrance to turn 3 on lap 10 and the yellow flag was brought out. The restart saw Richards grab the lead and Mike Hansen put the 94 into fourth. Fluckiger advanced to second with 9 to go and Hansen moved into third the next circuit. Roy Armstrong leaped into third past Hansen with 5 to go in his 6R and Dave Carter put the 2C into fourth as Hansen’s car got extremely loose. The final lap saw Jeff Ware put the 83 into fourth making the top 4 Richards, Fluckiger, Armstrong and Ware.

This marked win #2 on the season for Richards after he captured the Hobby Stock portion of the season opening Icebreaker Challenge. Richards has moved up to the hobby stock class and I inquired how he liked it. He related “It’s definitely a lot of fun. It’s a lot more money and a LOT more competition, so to be winning? I’ll take it!! I knew on that restart that I had to get around them as fast as I could and get to the high side. Once I hit the high side I knew I was safe and comfortable. I want to thank my step-dad, my Mom, my girlfriend Kaylee and everybody else who helps out with the car”. Richards’ sponsors include Heartland Hay Grinding, Inline Healing, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, Nelson Tree Service, Auto Shop Inc. and S&L Trenching.

Jeff Schroyer led lap 1 of the Hoosier Tire IMCA Modified Feature with Aaron Pella’s 3A, the 27 of Clint Homan and Rik Gropp’s V45 rounding out the top 4. Dan Nelson passed Gropp on lap 2 to put the 94 into fourth. Homan got past Pella n lap 4. Nelson also passed Pella on lap 6 to take over third. Lap 8 saw Homan grab the lead as Anthony Roth put the 60IV into fourth, but William Nusser looped the 7N in turns 3 & 4. Roth jumped up to third on the restart. Nelson got past Roth with 7 to go to retake third. The next lap saw Pella, the 1RS of Rodney Stopak, Chad Andersen’s 8C and the 91J of Jaylen Wettengel get together in turn 2 for a caution period. Homan and Roth moved up to first and second on the restart and Roth took over the lead the next lap as Bob Zoubek put the 5s into fourth. Zoubek advanced to third with 4 to go. Andersen again looped his car with 2 to go, this time in 3 & 4. Johnny Saathoff made a huge move with 3 to go, jumping up to second but the yellow flag was shown for 2 cars stopped in turn 4. At that time it was Roth, Homan, Zoubek and Saathoff.  The last change in the top 4 came with 2 circuits left as Saathoff moved to third and Zoubek took second, making the top 4 Roth, Zoubek, Saathoff and Homan.

This was Roth’s sixth win on the season at Eagle. “We don’t have as many wins as last year, but we’re facing better competition. It’s been a fun year for sure” he said. I mentioned that he was currently second in national IMCA points and asked if he thought he could catch Jordan Grabouski who is leading the chase. He replied “We race Jordan weekly every place but here. You never know. You can’t give up until the very end. Not until the date is stamped on the points being over”. Roth’s sponsors include Razor Chassis, Afco Shocks, Jerovitz Motorsports, Superior Fuel Cells, Speedway Crate Engines, Steve’s Yard Care, Out-Pace Racing Products, KSC Racing Products, Shell Valley Classic Wheels, R&R Sandblasting, Cuba Construction, Totally Clipz Salon, Roth Racing, Wild West Barbecue, BSB Manufacturing, Fast Shafts, Wilwood, Aero Race Wheels and Schoenfeld Headers.

The ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact A’s first circuit was led by Brad Gallagher’s 26X, the 55 of Adam Reifler, Tim Horsham’s 3 and the 13J of Josh Young. Horsham moved to second on lap 4 as Brian Cronin took over the fourth position in his 35 before moving to third the next lap. Young retook the fourth spot after 2 more laps. Young advanced to third the next lap with 2 laps left Cole Krichau moved up to fourth in the 70SS. The final top 4 were Gallagher, Horsham, Young and Krichau.

Gallagher could not be located for an interview.

Nate Weiler put the 4W out front on the first lap of the Duros Dent Works Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car A Feature. Nick Bryan in the 52, Dan Neckolite’s 22D and the 12N of Neil Nickolite rounded out the top 4. Nickolite did a 360-degree spin in turn 2 on the second lap, giving the fourth spot to Toby Chapman’s 40X. Adam Gullion used the restart to fly around the top and put the 91JV into second with Chapman third and Bryan fourth. Chapman passed Gullion for second on lap 4 as Mike Boston put the 51 into fourth. Mike Houseman’s 4L came to a halt in turn 4 on lap 6 to light the yellow lamps in the corners. Joey Danley took advantage of the restart to put the 14 into 4 as Gullion passed Chapman for second. Chapman got back past Gullion the next lap and took over the lead on lap 11. Danley moved up to second the next lap. Danley got around Chapman with 10 to go at Gullion again moved up to third. Weiler looped his racer in turn 1 with 8 to go, collecting Jason Danley’s 4X and the 12 of Tyler Drueke and the action slowed again. That put Boston back into fourth. Boston took over third with 8 to go but lost the spot back to Gullion the next time around. Chapman slowed with a flat right rear tire with 5 laps left, giving the fourth spot to Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35. Grossenbacher moved to third on the restart making the final top 4 Danley, Gullion, Grossenbacher and Boston.

“It’s been a little bit of a struggle this year, but we righted the ship tonight I think. The yellows helped a ton! I got up to fifth pretty quick. The leaders were really battling each other, and I managed to squirt by there and kind of took off from them after that. It was a blast watching the leaders race, and when I got to them it was even more fun being able to drive by them. I’m not quite used to that this year” he related. I asked if tonight was a good tune-up for the IMCA Sprint Car Racesaver Nationals in 2 weeks and he said, “I think we’re ready to go now, hopefully”. Danley’s sponsors include Empire Fencing, Russell Shoulders Race Engines, Nissen Hardwood Floors and Automotive Services.

Next weekend is Last Call! Season finale presented by the Nebraska Lottery and Coors light. It is the final regular season race for 2019 and will decide the points champions in all classes. It is also the Prelude to RaceSaver Nationals and Last Call for purchasing discounted Grandstand admission Passes
