Nostalgic Night sees Harms, Armstrong, Ableson, Meyer and Richards take home wins

By Greg Soukup

It wasn’t a full moon Saturday night as Sam’s Club presented Nostalgic Night at Eagle Raceway, but it was a strange night nonetheless.

In the hot laps for the Budweiser IMCA Racesaver Sprints Frank Sheridan’s car suffered a fuel leak and caught fire. After the fire was extinguished, and it was being pushed back to his pit, the fire reignited.

In the first heat race for the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts the 82B of Kurt Beckstrom ran headlong into the wall between turns 1 & 2. Kurt had to be extracted from the car after suffering a severe ankle injury.

In the third heat for the class Amanda Rhiley suffered a broken forearm after spinning to avoid a stopped competitor in turn 3. Both were transported to the hospital by private vehicle. Their current condition is unknown at this time.

There were several other fires and other minor occurrences in the remaining preliminary races.

The first A Feature was for the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds. Jason Harms’ 6H, the 2R of Don Rinke, Kyle Flodman’s 7K and the 14 of Joey Danley were the first four racers back to the flag stand. Lap 2 saw Danley move up to third and Max Harder got the 23 past Flodman the next lap. Gary Saathoff got his 96 past Harder on lap 4. Randy Fox’s 09RX and the 22K of Kevin Anderson spun to a stop on lap 14 for the first yellow flag of the race. Saathoff passed Danley and Rinke on the low side with 4 circuits remaining to take second. The final top 4 were Harms, Saathoff, Danley and Rinke.

Harms’ first win at Eagle came in his 11th year of racing and third in the Sport Modified class. “I got the lead first, but it helped that I started on the pole. So, I ran the bottom to protect the lead” ” stated Harms. He finished the interview by relating “The competition here is tough with all of these cars, and it’s hard to even make the A, let alone win it. But I love running before a packed house every week”. Jason’s sponsors include GH Double Guns, Stava Flying Service, Kobus Well Drilling, Design Shop, Goldfuss Racing and Fabrication and Hoffman Race Cars.

Mark McKinney’s 23 spun on the first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature, causing a pile-up behind him. The 12 of Dan Noonan, RJ Macku’s 93 and the 62 of Justin Busboom all went to the pits under their own power. Tim Kozak’s 29 made the trip pit side via the wrecker however. Chad Fegley led the first official lap in the 13F with the 98X of Garrett Bolander, Travis Albracht’s 38A and Derek Fralin’s 1 close on his rear bumper. Nick Lindblad’s 26 stopped on lap 3 for another caution. Fralin passed Albracht on the restart and Roy Armstrong in the 6R also passed Albrecht the next time around to grab fourth before getting around Fralin for third on lap 8. One more lap was in the books before Armstrong snagged second and he moved into the lead with 8 to go. John Cain got his 44 into fourth with 7 to go before losing the spot back to Fralin with 4 left. The final change in the top four came with 2 laps left as Albracht moved to second. At the checkers it was Armstrong, Albracht, Fegley and Fralin.

This was Roy’s third victory at Eagle this season and came after a heroic charge from the C Feature last week to finish fourth. “I ran the top, because that’s my favorite line. The track was fast as usual, thanks to Roger” he said. His last thought was “Special thanks go to my son Adam for picking out the right shocks for tonight”. Roy’s sponsors include Neapco and B & D Motorsports.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds were next on the track. Scot Bivens in the S56 led the field after 1 circuit with Nathan Landauer’s 11N, the 21 of Phil Penney and Justin Wulf’s 86 completing the top 4. Penney moved to second on lap 2 and Chris Ableson’s 1x advanced to fourth as he and Wulf both passed Landauer the next lap. Ableson moved around Wulf on lap 4 to third. Ableson vaulted past both Penney and Bivens on lap 5. Landauer got a big jump on lap 6 moving up to second with Dylan Smith’s 95 taking over third and Bivens being moved back to fourth. 1 lap later Smith moved to second as Bob Zoubek’s 5S moved to third with Landauer holding onto the fourth spot. With 5 left Kevin Larkins got the 4X into fourth.

This was Chris’ second win this year at Eagle. “It was a racy track as always” Ableson related. He continued by saying “I got stuck behind Phil, so I had to slide him a little”. He concluded the interview by stating “We’ve had bad luck the past 2 weeks, so this was a great win. I always love battling with Dylan!”. Ableson’s sponsors include Razor Chassis by Roth Racing, Bilstein Shocks, Edwardson Racing Engines and the Klub Lisa Girls.

The Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compacts were up next for the A. Sly Shively’s 49 led lap 1 with the 14J of Justin Olsen, Ramsey Meyer in the 21R and Kenny Roberts’ 69 the next 3. Meyer jumper around Olsen and Shively on lap 2 for the lead as Chad Bassinger got the 4x to third. The next time around Bassinger took second as Roberts went to the infield, allowing Joe Baker in the 9X and the 29 of Matt Moyer to take over third and fourth. Moyer passed Baker for third with 8 laps left. Cole Krichau’s 5K and the 30 of Erica Cronin got together with 6 left for the only caution of the race. The top 4 were Meyer, Bassinger, Moyer and Baker.

This was Meyer’s first win at Eagle in just his second year of racing. “The track was a little slick, but I like it that way. It was fun and fast” Meyer said. Meyer’s sponsors include Tom’s Service, The Clipstons, Demon Decals and Wraps, Charger Chassis and Walton Appliance.

Shayle Bade’s 03 led the first circuit of the race as the Budweiser IMCA Racesaver Sprints took to the high banks. She had Doug Roth’s 24R, the 52 of Nick Bryan and Terry Richards in the 18 on her rear push bar however. Richards and Bryan both passed Roth on lap 3. Chase Weiler spun in turn 2 on lap 7 for the race’s only caution. Mike Boston passed Roth on the restart to put the 51 in fourth. Boston also got past Bryan the next time around and Gregg Bolte got the 00 into fourth. Richards took the lead with just 4 laps left and Boston took over second the next time around. Bade passed Boston back with just 2 to go to snag second. Richards concluded the strange evening by spinning across the finish line to take home the win. It was Richards, Bade, Boston and Roth the top 4.

This was Terry’s first ‘Official’ win in a 305 sprint. “I actually finished first in a 305 race at another track back in 1998. But, they said I jumped the start and moved me back 4 spots after the green, white, checkered race. So, this is my first actual win in a sprint” he stated. He continued by saying “I love this class, and I’m so glad to be a part of the rookie class here at Eagle. My last modified cost a LOT more money, and these cars are faster”. He went on to say “I love the track every night there’s a high line around the top. I got lucky because I spotted the rubber just below the cushion, or I don’t think I’d ever have been able to pass Shayle. His last thought was “I need to thank Jarid for all of his help and the others who help out each week”. Terry’s sponsors are JR’s Tool Service and JDJ Structural Group.

Next week sees Kaplan University present Fan Appreciation Night. Front gate admission is just $5. Jolly Bean the Clown will be on site from 5:30 to 7:30. Active Life Family Chiropractic will be there all evening as well. The N’Finity Athletics Competitive Cheer Team will perform. Happy Hour from 6 to 7 will feature “Down & Dirty Lemonade”; Vodka, Lemonade and a splash of Sierra Mist with a little ‘Bull Ring Dirt’. Back by popular demand are the School Bus Races after the Features. Front gates open and hot laps commence at 5:30 with racing at 6:30.

Pit gates open at 4 with pit admission costing $20.
