Mustache Madness winners are Kobus, Armstrong, Andersen, Drueke & Powell

By Greg Soukup

It was sunny and warm, with a little breeze at Eagle Raceway Saturday for Mustache Madness-Dad’s Tribute night, presented by Pepsi and Wow-FM. A Friday night rain didn’t stop the track prep crew from giving the racers a great racing surface that provided 3-wide racing through the entire night.

Justin Olsen lost the right rear from the 14J in the first heat for the Mountain Dew IMCA Sport Compact heat, sending him snap-rolling from turn 1 into turn 2. He was not seriously injured.

Anthony Kobus led the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature in the #27 with Shelly Andersen’s 5S, the 98 of Dan Jackson and Randy Fox’s 09RX bunched behind him. Nick Beckman passed Fox  on lap 2 to put the 22 into fourth and also got past Jackson the next time around. Arie Schouten put the 99RE into fourth after another lap. The yellow flag was flown after another circuit when debris was found on the track. Jackson was sent to the rear of the field. The next change in the top 4 came on lap 12 when Gary Saathoff moved the #96 into fourth. Another debris caution came with 6 to go, and the action slowed again. Saathoff moved up to third with 3 to go and took second the next lap. The top 4 were Kobus, Saathoff, Andersen and Schouten.

This was Kobus’ first victory in this, his 5th year racing. “It’s always more tricky when you start out front. The track was tacky and slick, depending on where you were on it. I love coming here to Eagle, because of the competition. If you can win here, it’s a real accomplishment” said Kobus. Kobus’ sponsors include Demon Decals, Kobus Well Drilling, Schmidt Machine, Marquis Body Shop and Razor Chassis.

The first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Main saw Rick Bradley’s 28P, the 62 of Justin Busboom, Tyler Albracht’s 37A and Cody Leifeld in the 24X out front. Chad Fegley jumped up to second on lap 2 in the 13F. Damon Richards passed Albracht for fourth on lap 4, but Brett Saathoff looped his #11B in turn 2, putting Albracht back in fourth. Richards jumped all the way into third on the restart. Fegley grabbed the lead the next lap and Richards followed him into second on lap 7. John Watson put the 4W into third on lap 9, but Jack Philips spun the 00 in turn 1. Roy Armstrong in the 6R and Watson both moved into the top 4 with 9 to go as Armstrong snagged third and Watson again took over the fourth spot. Richards moved to the lead the next time around but gave up the spot to Armstrong after another circuit. Jeff Watts stopped the #66 in the pit entrance with just 5 laps left. The final change in the top 4 came when Watson moved past Fegley for third. The top 4 at the checkers were Armstrong, Richards, Watson and Fegley.

Armstrong related “I had to run high, because that was the only place nobody was at. Hats off to Roger for getting the most out of the track after the rain. The track was fast tonight. Thanks to my sponsors, and my girlfriend Jo”. Armstrong’s sponsors include Hummer Contracting, NEAPCO, BA Motorsports and Schmidt Machine.

Next was the main event for the Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds. Jeff Schroyer’s 007, the 11N of Nathan Landauer, Trevor Baker in the 25! and Johnny Saathoff’s 96J led the field after lap 1. Rik Gropp passed Saathoff for fourth on lap 2. Lap 3 saw Saathoff jump up to third and Landauer take the lead. Lap 4 saw Pat Wheeler spin the 22 in turns 1 and 2, collecting Gropp. Baker’s racer suffered a flat right rear on the restart and the yellow lights came on again. That put the 8A of Dustin Andersen into fourth. Andersen jumped up to second on the restart. Anthony Roth put the 60IV into fourth on lap 6. Shane Hiatt took over fourth with his 21H on lap 10. The final position swap in the top 4 came when Andersen took over the lead, making the top 4 Andersen, Landauer, Saathoff and Hiatt.

“We’ve been going good this season. Roger really did a good job when he worked the bottom of the track. The lapped traffic helped me out tonight for sure. I want to give a shout-out to my guys; Robbie, Collin, Brian and Tyler. A special thanks to Shane Hiatt; he really helps both on and off of the track” stated Andersen.

The Mountain Dew Kick Start IMCA Sport Compact Feature saw Shawn Hain’s 5H, Kyle Grobeck in the 42G, Nick Lindblad in the 26 and Steven Rol’s 33 out front of the first circuit. Rol stopped in turns 1 and 2 on lap 2 for a caution period, moving the 18R of Tom Powell into fourth. Powell jumped up to second on the restart and was followed by the 29 of Matt Moyer who took over third the next lap, leaving Lindblad in fourth. Cole Krichau moved into fourth in his 30K and took over third 4 laps later. Powell snagged the lead with 3 to go. Krichau passed Hein with 2 to go, but gave the position back to him the last circuit. The final top 4 were Powell, Hein, Krichau and Moyer.

This was Powell’s first 2016 victory, and came from the 6th spot on the starting grid. “I want to thank Roger for all of the hard work he puts in. He gave us a nice track tonight. Also, thanks to the fans who come out all of the time; it wouldn’t be any fun without them” he said. Powell’s sponsors include King Ranch Customs, Moose Mountain Construction, Blue River Bonsai, Agway Trucking and Fine Line Body and Paint.

The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car A showed Chase Weiler’s 0, the 5 of Ron Love, Ryan King in the 93 and Keith Dragoo’s 77D the first four after 1 circuit. Doug Lovegrove put the #1 into fourth on lap 2 and moved to second on lap 10 as Shayle Bade took over the 3rd spot. Toby Chapman looped the 7KX on lap 13. Tyler Drueke took fourth on the restart. Bade grabbed second with 11 left and took the lead the next time around.  Drueke moved up to second with 9 to go and took the lead 2 laps later when Bade bobbled going into turn 1 and made contact with the wall. She slowed and came to a halt in turn 4 with a severely damaged front end. That made the top 4 Drueke, Weiler, Lovegrove and Bryan. Lovegrove used the restart to take second. Adam Gullion took over fourth from Bryan with 5 to go. The final slowing of action came with 2 to go when Blain Petersen’s 68+1 hit the turn 4 wall hard. Trevor Grossenbacher used the restart to fly into third and took the second position the next lap as Gullion again moved up to fourth. The final top 4 were Drueke, Grossenbacher, Lovegrove and Gullion.

Drueke’s victory came from the 12th starting spot on the initial grid. “I was kind of riding around behind Shayle the whole time, just hanging out and searching for different lines. When we got to first and second I found the middle in 3 and 4. I was just waiting for lapped traffic. Unfortunately she caught the wall, and gave the top spot to me” related Drueke. Drueke’s sponsors include Drueke Trucking and Ranch, Zoz Farms, Jeffrey’s Trucking, Reid’s Farmacy and Agri-Builders.
