Sanford, Armstrong, Neal, Olsen & Dover win on Media Night

Although Mother Nature held sway over the first scheduled event for Eagle Raceway, the Icebreaker Challenge, she relented a little for Media Night presented by KX 96.9 Saturday. Even though she gave the large crowd sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-sixties, she reminded everyone that she was around with strong winds throughout the day and evening. Both KX9.9 and The Eagle 92.9 were on hand, doing live broadcasts. There were other media outlets were on hand also, with several folks being treated to free rides during the heat races in the 2-seater modified.

A record car count of 180 (surpassing the previous record by 30), combined with the unrelenting winds, led to dry-slick track conditions by the time that the features rolled around.

The heats went without serious instances until the first Budweiser 360 Sprint heat when Mark Finnell flipped his #27 racer in turn 4 on the very first lap. On the second attempt at a restart Mike Boston got the 51 up into Gage Dorr’s 17 in turn 3, sending them both for a ride. Just before the checkered flag, the 23S of Stu Snyder and Billy Alley’s 22 got together on the front stretch with both of them tumbling past the flag stand. Mark Schmidt got the 9J very high in the second heat, contacting the Armco and flipping.

The NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature was the first main run. Max Harder was first back to the flag stand in his #34 followed by the 7R of Todd Sanford, Brian Langdale’s 1 and Steve Swarthout in the 23. Kyle Driskell moved the 33 up to 2nd on lap 2, sending Sanford to 3rd and Langdale to fourth. Swarthout moved back into the top 4 on lap 4 as Sanford retook second and Kyle Prauner grabbed third. Benji Legg’s 25L snared fourth the next time around. 3 more laps were in the books when Matt Boucher brought out the yellow flag stopping in turn 4. Harder, Sanford, Prauner and Legg were the top 4 at that point. Sanford moved around Harder on the restart with Legg taking second. Boucher again caused the caution lights to come on when he spun in turn 4 the next lap. 1 lap after the restart the 25X of Trevor Baker spun in turn 2, bringing the field to an idle yet again. From the restart to the end the top 4 remained the same with Sanford taking the win, Prauner second, Harder third and Legg in fourth.  Although Todd has won in other classes at Eagle Raceway before, this was his first victory in an IMCA Sport Modified. “I want to thank my 14 year-old car owner, Kyle Floodman and the rest of the Floodman family for giving me this chance. I can’t say enough about my pit crew either; Ron, TJ, Randy, Troy, Kyle, Conner and especially my dad Jerry do a great job for me weekly” Sanford stated. Todd’s sponsors include Ink Machine, Butthead Express, Signs Now, Cattle Company, Ron Fox and Sons, Frontier Group, Alltronix, Don’s Used Cars, Uprise, Vermeer, Don Rich Machine and Production Car Care Products.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were up next and defending points champion Nick Beckman took his #22 to the line first with Keith Dragoo’s 77D, the 44X of John Cain and RJ Macku’s 1R in tow. Lee Kracht’s 10K, the 0 of Todd Schmidt and Ryan Roschewski’s 2 got together on the front stretch and the yellow flew to slow the action. Macku was sent to the rear on the restart after running over the restart cone, causing a 2nd restart; that moved the 94 of Mike Hansen into fourth. Cain took third 3 laps after the restart, only to have Steve Shepard’s 20T come to a stop. Roy Armstrong got his 6R up to fourth a couple of laps later as Cain got back to 2nd. Armstrong passed Dragoo and Cain the next time around. Armstrong took the lead for good 2 laps later as Dragoo got back to third. At the finish it was Armstrong, Beckman, Cain and Dragoo the top 4. Armstrong left before he could be interviewed.

The RevHoney IMCA Modifieds came out then for their Feature. Aaron Pella caused the caution lights to be lit on the first lap when he spun the 3A on the front stretch and Mike Densberger looped the 81 in turn 2. As a lap was finally in the books Jake Neal’s 14J was in the lead with Roger Hadan’s 4, the 96J of Johnny Saathoff and Lance Borgman in the 76 rounding out the top 4. Saathoff vaulted into first on lap 3 with Borgman taking third and Hadan holding fourth. Bob Zoubek grabbed fourth 2 laps later. Several more laps had been run when Hadan again grabbed third. Borgman moved back into third a couple of laps later as Chris Abelson moved the 1X into fourth. Saathoff got trapped behind lapped cars the next time around, allowing Neal to snare the lead. At the end the top 4 were Neal, Saathoff, Borgman and Abelson.  “This was my first win ever at Eagle, but my second in a row this season” Neal said. He finished the interview by stating “I feel it’s a privilege to not only race here, but to win against a great field of cars like this”. Neal’s sponsors include Select Auto, Neal’s Automotive, Heartland Water Jet, ATB Motorsports and Overnight Wraps.

The Exhaust Pro’s IMCA Sport Compact A Main started with a melee on the start, resulting in Maynard Kinnersley’s 18 rolling over in turns 1 & 2. After ensuring that Kinnersley wasn’t injured, the safety crew righted his racer and Kinnersley rejoined the pack. At the completion of lap 1 Bob Cigelman’s 95C led with Brandon Bolin in the 54, Larry Cronin’s 5 and the 30 of Erica Cronin next. Amanda Rhiley moved her #51 into 4th on lap 2 and then up to third the next lap. Ole Olsen got his #23 into 4th on the next circuit as Larry Cronin snared the lead. Rhiley got up to 2nd after 2 more circuits. Another pair of laps was completed when the yellow flag flew for the B32 of Brian Haller and Mike Simpson’s 63 who spun in 1 & 2. At that time it was Larry Cronin, Rhiley, Cigelman and Olsen. Olsen moved to third on the restart.  Kinnersley spun out 2 laps later in turns 3 & 4 and Jack Prall IV stopped in turn 4. After the restart, there was 1 lap run when Larry Cronin lost his right rear wheel and flipped badly in turn 4. That put Rhiley into the lead, Olsen second, Cigelman third and the 66G of Kyle Gannon fourth. 2 laps after the restart Olsen took the lead and Gannon moved to third past Cigelman. The top 4 were Olsen, Rhiley, Gannon and Cigelman. Olsen also left before being interviewed.

The Budweiser 360 Sprints were the final A Feature of the evening. Lap 1 saw Mark Pace’s 31 in the lead with Jack Dover in the 53, Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35 and the 4 of Jordan Boston in hot pursuit. Lap 7 saw Dover pass Pace, only to lose the lead back to him the next circuit. Lap 14 saw Tadd Holliman’s 23R spin in turn 4 after contact with the 21 of Ryan Kitchen. The race ran under green until with just 3 laps left Ken Klabunde stopped his #28 at the entrance to turn 3 and jump out of his racer and drop to the ground with a fuel fire. He suffered minor burns on his right foot. On the restart Dover passed Pace and held on for the victory. At the checkers it was Dover, Pace, Jordan Boston and Grossenbacher.  “I was nervous the whole time, I can tell you” Dover related. He concluded the interview by saying “When that last red flag came out, I told myself ‘Be patient’. I figured he’d go high on the restart, but when he moved to the bottom in 1 & 2 in front of me I said again ‘Don’t worry’. I finally got by him and then just set sail”. Dover’s sponsors include Thorpe’s Body Shop, Home Pride, Butlerbuilt, Trail Performance Coatings, Oil Medics and Ledger Motorsports.
