Martin, Abelson, Kohl, Meyer & Leiting win the Season Opener!

Martin, Abelson, Kohl, Meyer & Leiting win the Season Opener!

By Greg Soukup

Saturday evening was the kick-off to the 2016 “Keep calm, and race on!” season at Eagle Raceway. Temperatures in the low 80’s with a stiff south wind gave way to a cool, breezy night with a total of 180 cars in the pits itching to get out onto the high banks of “America’s Home Track”.

All of the preliminary events were run without serious incidents.

The NAPA IMCA Sport Modified feature saw the 33J of Josh Pfeiffer, Mark Leiting’s 20M, Lance Borgman in the 76 and the 97 of David Johnson the first four back to the flag stand on lap 1. Leiting snagged the lead on lap 3 with Shawn Harker putting the #40 into fourth Borgman also moved past Pfeiffer on lap 5 to take second. There was a melee on the front stretch on lap 9, with 6 cars involved. One of them being the 3T of Nate Thompson coming into the mess late and taking his racer up and over. Thompson was not seriously injured. 1 lap after the restart Trent Roth put the 14T into fourth, but went into the infield 4 laps later, bringing out the yellow flag. That gave the fourth spot back to Harker. On the restart Gary Saathoff jumped into third, moving Johnson to fourth. Jason Harms in the 6H passed Saathoff 1 lap later, but gave the position back shortly after that. The next lap Harker passed Saathoff to move up to third. The final top 4 were Leiting, Borgman, Harker and Saathoff.

Leiting had started in the third spot. “We went 3-wide at times. I knew I had to protect the bottom, and I was really worried about Lance once I got the lead and he got to second. It’s nice to come out and win the opener, because I can’t be here every week due to other commitments. I want to than all of the veterans for all they did for us” he related. Leiting’s sponsors include MDI Custom Homes, Traditions Pub, KVC Foster Care, Ben Bleicher Home Realty, Roca Tavern. K2L Graphics, Goldfuss Racing and Fabrication, Williams Welding, Terry’s Electric, People’s Mortgage, Big Johnson Race Cars, Home and Farm Insurance, Hill’s Pest Control, Midtown Plumbing.

Next on the track was the main event for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Jason Kohl used his front row starting spot to take the #27 to the lead at the end of the first lap with Shawn Slezak’s 35S, the 5 of Chris Klein and Chad Fegley’s 13F rounding out the top 4. Fegley passed Klein on lap 2 for third and Klein lost the fourth spot to Roy Armstrong’s #6R on 4. Armstrong got past Fegley for third on lap 12, but Slezak stopped at the top of turns 3 & 4 to bring out the yellow flag. That put Armstrong in third with the 67 of Damon Richards fourth. Richards took to the infield with 6 laps left, butting Brett Saathoff’s 11B into fourth. Fegley came to a stop at the top of turn 2 with 3 to go after losing the right front wheel from his car. That made the top 4 Kohl, Armstrong, Saathoff and the 23 of Mark McKinney. The top 4 remained unchanged through the checkered, flag.

“I want to thank Roger for having us. Also, thanks to my parents, my wife and kids. We have a great bunch of hobby stock racers here at Eagle” stated Kohl. Kohl’s sponsors include Spill Kits, Justice Brothers, BD Electric, Culvers, Goeser Labradors, Healthquest Chiropractic, City Garbage and Corner Service and Tire.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds rolled out next. Chris Ableson’s 1X, the 4 of Roger Hadan, Jeff Schroyer in the 007 and Justin Wulf’s 86 led the first circuit. Wulf and Shane Hiatt in the 21H both passed Schroyer on lap 2 to take over third and fourth. 2 laps later Hiatt moved up to third. Schroyer spun out in turn 2 the next time around. Bob Zoubek passed Wulf on lap 8 to put the 33Z into fourth as Hiatt moved up to second. There were 6 laps to go when Anthony Roth got around Zoubek for fourth and the 2 battled for a few laps before Zoubek took the spot for good. The final top 4 were Ableson, Hiatt, Hadan and Zoubek.

Ableson said “It’s always easier when you start on the front row. It was a little rough in spots tonight, because of the rain; but there were different lines you could run to avoid them”. Ableson’s sponsors include Razor Chassis, AFCO Racing Products, BSB, Speedway Motors and Friesen Crate Engines.

The Mountain Dew Kick Start IMC Sport Compact A Main saw Ramsey Meyer in the 21R grab the lap 1 lead followed by Scott Spellmeyer’s 88S, the 3B of Kyle Owen and Tim Horsham in the 3. Brian Haller got hung up on an implement tire between turns 3 & 4 on lap 3 and the yellow lights came on. Owen moved to second with 6 to go and Horsham followed him into second 2 laps later as Matt Moyer cracked the top 4 in his #29. The top 4 at the end were Meyer, Owen, Horsham and Moyer.

This was 2 in a row for Meyer after winning the compact feature at the Ice Breaker Challenge. “I just made sure that I hit my marks after getting out front. We got a bunch of rain up north this week, so I made the decision to come down to Eagle and I’m sure glad that I did. Thanks to my dad and brother for their help and my mom and grandparents for all of their support” stated Meyer.

The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car A Feature rounded out the evening’s racing. Jason Martin jumped out front in his 5X with Tyler Drueke’s 12, the 04 of Shayle Bade and Gene Ackland’s 14G hot on his push bumper. Richard Weers slowed on the front stretch on lap 5 to bring out a caution. He eventually stopped with damage to his front end and was pushed up into the pits. Shon Pointer moved his 20P past Ackland 1 lap after the restart to snag fourth. Bade moved past Drueke on the next circuit, but relinquished the spot back to him on lap 9. Bade wasn’t giving up however, and regained the position the next time around. Lap 13 saw Pointer also pass Drueke to take over third, but Drueke charged back to take third with 9 laps left. Drueke again passed Bade with 3 to go to snag second. The final top 4 were Martin, Drueke, Bade and Mike Boston who got past Pointer the last lap.

“I’ll say the same thing that Trevor said last week; it’s easy to win when you start on the front row. We felt that we had the car to win last week, so we kept the same set-up. Next week it won’t be so easy when the handicap starts up. But, that just makes it more exciting” Martin related. Martin’s sponsors include Midwest Linings, Truck Plus, Deuces Wild Power Coating and EMI/Speedway Motors.

Next weekend is Mom’s Rock Night at Eagle Raceway. Front gates open at 5:15 with adult admission being $10, youths 6-12 costing just $5 and children 5 and under free. Hot laps start at 5:30 with racing kicking off at 6:30. The Racesaver IMCA Sprint Cars, Kaplan University IMCA Modifieds, NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks and Mountain Dew Kick Start IMCA Sport Compacts competing.

Pit Gates open at 4 P.M. and pit passes are $25
