Loyet takes the win at Thunder in the Plains

Loyet takes the win at Thunder in the Plains

By Greg Soukup

Despite over 7 inches of rain, the crack Eagle Raceway track prep crew got the racing surface into fantastic shape for Friday night’s Thunder in the Plains, presented by Budweiser. In this, just the second ever event for the FVP National Sprint League, Brian Brown started the evening off by setting the quick time in qualifying at 11.606.

Brooke Tatnell, Tim Kaeding, Matt Juell and Logan Forler won their respective heats with Dusty Zoomer, Bryan Clauson, Davey Heskin and Josh Schneiderman making the transfer from the B to the A feature.

Aaron Reutzel climbed the turn 1 wall on the first lap of the A Main before landing on his tires in turn 2. He went to the work area and returned to the contest, making a great run by coming back to 12th.

Brad Loyet’s 05, the 24 of Terry McCarl, Brian Brown’s 21 and the 17B of Bill Balog led the first official lap. Lap 3 saw Danny Lasoski put the #2 into fourth past Balog. The next lap Eon Madsen’s 18 stopped on the front stretch and the yellow lights were lit again. Lynton Jeffrey spun his #12 three laps after the restart for another caution. On the next attempt at racing Jeffrey bicycled in turn 1 and ended going up and over in turn 2 as the red flag flew. Brown moved past McCarl on lap 9 but ended giving the spot back on lap 22 before retaking the position on the next circuit. Lasoski also got around McCarl, taking third on lap 27. Mark Dobmeier snagged the fourth spot in the closing laps, putting his #13 ahead of McCarl. Brown used the heavy lapped traffic on the last lap, passing Loyet on the back stretch, only to have Loyet use the low line in turns 3 and 4 to retake the lead and hold on for the victory. At the checkers it was Loyet, Brown, Lasoski and Dobmeier.

“This was an AWESOME track tonight. I’m so glad that we got the races in after all of that rain. I got lucky and a youngster drew the #1 pill for me, giving me the pole. I wasn’t worried at all, until we hit that really heavy lapped traffic at the end. I saw Brian go around me down the back stretch, but I knew how good my line was on the bottom of 3 and 4. It was a really good run” Loyet said. When asked about the possibility of winning the $20,000 for sweeping the weekend’s racing he said “We have a shot. I want to thank Phil Durst for all he does for us. He gave me my start in racing actually, because the first car I ever had we got from him”. Loyet’s sponsors include Vacuworks, Meramac Heights Collision Center and Loyet Landscaping.
