Kids Night wins taken by Berghahn Jr., Richards, Borgman, Kinnersley and Snyder

By Greg Soukup

Cloudy skies with a threat of rain turned to sunny, hot and humid conditions as a very good crowd came through the front gates of Eagle Raceway Saturday night for Kids Night presented by Olston’s Auto Recyclers and the annual Bike Giveaway. Face painting for the kids, and Happy D Klown made for a great time for all of the youngsters in attendance. Everyone was treated to fantastic racing on a fantastic surface.
At intermission 304 young fans received brand new bicycles donated by fans, race teams, drivers and other sponsors. Winners were chosen by drawing straws as they entered the facility, but all children received a prize. There were plenty of other prizes for all of the fans given away throughout the evening as well.

All preliminary races were run without serious incidents.

The 88 of Roger Harpster and Mary Lenz in the 17 stopped on the back stretch after contact between the two on the initial start of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified Feature, causing a complete restart. Shelly Andersen’s 5V, the 6 of Denny Berghahn Jr., Joey Danley’s 14 and Gary Laflin’s #9 were the top 4 when the first lap was completed. Laflin took third from Danley on lap #2. They yellow flag flew again on lap 3 for debris. Kevin Anderson’s 22K got rammed hard from behind on the restart, causing him to spin. The fourth circuit saw Joey Danley spin, collecting the 7R of Todd Sanford, Max Harder’s 34 and the 20 of Lindsey Yost. That moved the 15 of Nathan Kobus into the fourth position. Kyle Prauner got his 5K into fourth on lap 5. Berghahn Jr. passed Andersen for the top spot on lap 8. Marty Steinbach cracked the top 4 on lap 9 in his #5, only to have a debris caution occur again. At that point, the running order was Berghahn Jr., Andersen, Kobus and Prauner. Kobus and Prauner both passed Andersen on lap 10, and Andersen gave up fourth the next lap to the 90 of Matt Richards. Lap 17 saw Prauner move up to second. The next time around Gary Saathoff’s 96 and Kobus got together in turns 1 & 2 for the final caution of the race. The top 4 remained unchanged to the finish with Berghahn Jr. winning, Prauner second, Richard third and Steinbach fourth.

“This was my second win on the year, but my first this season at Eagle. After not making it out of the B 3 weeks in a row, it was nice to get the lead and just check out” Berghahn Jr. said. “With the level of competition here, if you can win at Eagle you can win anywhere” he continued. He continued by stating “I want to thank Roger and Michelle, the racers, fans and everyone else for buying those 304 bikes for the giveaway”. His closing statements were “I want to thank my sister Marsha with the Patriot Racers, Brad & Suzanne Wright with Creative Edge Graphics, Village Inn and Bucky the Bear, and my girlfriend Felicia. Plus there’s my family for supporting me all year, and of course my Dad. I really missed him not being here tonight to see my win”.

The first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A Main saw Damon Richards’ 68 out front followed by Derick Noonan in the 21, Tim Kozak’s 22T and David Carter in the 2C. Kozak passed Noonan on lap 2 but there was a big tangle of cars in turns 1 & 2 causing the yellow lights to be lit. Kozak spun into the infield on lap 4, moving Carter to third and Garrett Bolander’s 98X into fourth. Roy Armstrong passed Bolander on lap 6, putting the 6R into fourth. Armstrong moved up another spot on lap 8. Mike Hansen put the #94 into fourth on lap 11. Armstrong advanced another spot to second on lap 13 and Hansen moved to third 2 laps later. Carter again moved into the top 4 on lap 16, taking fourth.

Damon said “It felt great to get my first win here at Eagle finally. I thought I had the strongest car, and didn’t have any bad luck finally”. He went on to state “I liked the track tonight; it was nice and dry slick. That means that the big motors can’t shine”. Lastly he related “I want to thank everyone for cheering on the Mopar every week”. Damon’s sponsors include his father (Charger Chassis), Demon Decals, Husker Steel, Bongers Auto, Sop EZ, Kats Car Wash and TR’s Tool Service.

The Rev Honey IMCA Modified A saw a big tangle of cars in turns 1 & 2 with the 95 of Dylan Smith, Chris Ableson’s 1X, Chad Andersen’s 8C, the 31 of Andrew Hille and Justin Wulf’s 86 all involved. After a complete restart Dustin Andersen’s 8A, the V45 of Rik Gropp, Wulf and Trejo all came to a stop in turns 1 & 2. Joe Borer’s 8J led the first official lap of the race with Chad Andersen’s 8C, the 81 of Mike Densberger’s 81 and the 76 of Lance Borgman rounding out the top 4. Borgman passed Densberger on lap 2. 2 laps later Borgman got past Andersen as did Densberger with Chris Alcorn getting the #3 into fourth. Borgman took the lead from Borer on lap 6. Lap 8 saw a racer hit the implement tire in turns 1 & 2, bringing out a caution so that it could be put back into position. Alcorn moved to third and Andersen took fourth on lap 9. 3 laps later Densberger moved back into fourth. Lap 15 saw Alcorn take second as Smith again moved to fourth. Johnny Saathoff jumped his 96J to third on lap 17 as Smith retained fourth. Smith made a huge run on Saathoff on the final lap, but Saathoff held him off at the flag stand. The official results showed Borgman with the victory, Alcorn second, Saathoff third and Smith fourth.

“It’s about time!” Borgman said. “I haven’t gotten a win here since 2009, and starting 7th didn’t help. Those couple of yellows helped, but we had a good car. I didn’t think we had a winning car, but I stuck with it” he stated. He continued by relating “It’s pretty tough to win here, and it means a lot to me whenever I can. I want to thank my wife, my daughter, my new son Kash, my father-in-law and Chris Lampe”. Lance’s sponsors include Penner Insurance, Coordsen Farms, Classic Auto, Jet Racing and Gibbs Sports Bar.

The Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compact Feature’s first lap was led by the 4A of Jesse Osmon, Barry Kinnersley in the 00, Josh Johnson in the 25 and Erica Cronin in the 30. Amanda Rhiley put her #51 into fourth on lap 5 before moving to third the next lap. Ole Olsen’s 23 took fourth the next lap. Kenny Roberts put the #69 into fourth on lap 14 for the final change in the top 4. Osmon took the checkered flag followed by Kinnersley, Rhiley and Roberts. Osmon was disqualified for having a modified suspension, giving the victory to Kinnersley.

“I need to thank my friends and family for giving me so much time to replace the transmission that we broke last week in the feature. Mostly I need to thank Dad for all of his hard work, Matt (the #29) for busting his hiney and Nick Lindblad for helping tune the car. Also, thanks to my wife for putting up with me and my racing” Kinnersley stated. He concluded the interview by relating “A big thank you to Roger for keeping Eagle going. This track is way above any other track in the country, and definitely the most competitive track anywhere”.
Kinnersley’s sponsor is Kinnersley Grading.

The Budweiser 360 Sprint Cars then rolled onto the high banks for their A Main. Stu Snyder took advantage of his starting position to put the 23S into the lead on lap 1 with Mike Boston’s 51, Terry Holliman’s 23 and Jason Danley’s 82 close behind. Danley passed Holliman on the second lap, but Lee Bowes spun his #57B in turns 1 & 2. Lap 8 saw Jack Dover move into fourth. Dover took third on lap 9, but the 0 of Jeff Osborn slowed on the backstretch and the yellow lights were lit. Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35 stopped in turn 2 also and was unable to refire. Dover used the restart to take third again before moving into second on lap 23. The racers were on the final circuit when Dover used the high line to pass Snyder. His lead was negated however as Nick Bryan’s #6 stopped in turn four. Dover fell in behind on the restart of the green/white/checker finish. Boston made a valiant effort to pass Dover coming out of turn 4 on the final circuit, but the top four were Snyder, Dover, Boston and Holliman.

This was Snyder’s second win of the season at Eagle. “I didn’t see anybody challenging me until Jack came up beside me a couple of times. That yellow flag putting me back in the lead definitely helped us big time” Snyder stated. He finished by relating “The track was great tonight, with high and bottom grooves. I tried to stay on the bottom, because I couldn’t seem to make the top work for me. Roger and the crew did a great job on the track tonight. I also want to thank all of the fans for coming out to watch us all compete every week. It means so much to us racers”. Stu’s sponsors include Shakers Gentleman’s Club, Davidson Plumbing and Welding, DFS Fabrication, Source One Powder Coating and Justin Haase.

Next weekend will again see the Budweiser 360 Sprints, Rev Honey Modifieds, NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks and Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compacts in action as Colby Ridge and the American Red Cross present Dare to Be Aware!-Cancer Awareness and American Red Cross Blood Drive at “America’s Home Track”.
