Junior Fan Club and Scout Night wins to Vollbrecht, Busboom, Hadan, Kinnersley, Boston, Danley, Beckman, Ableson, Lindblad & Snyder

by Greg Soukup

Possibly the best weather of the year greeted the fans who came out to Eagle Raceway for the festivities Saturday night as Junior Fan Club & Scout Night was held. Although 3 3/4 inches of rain had fallen over the previous 2 days, the track prep crew got the surface ready for racing, and there was plenty of that over the course of the evening.

Before the regular racing program could kick off, the features for the rained-out August 6th card were run.

The first try at a start of the NAPA IMCA Sport Modified A Feature saw the 5 of Marty Steinbach and the 88 of Roger Harpster get together, both went to the pits and there was a complete restart. Ryan Munhall led the first official lap in his 29X with the 20 of Lindsey Yost, Kevin Anderson’s 22K and Buddy Ray Jones’ 25. Jones grabbed second on lap 2 with Anderson holding third and Nelson Vollbrecht’s 11X moving into fourth. Larry Robinson Sr.’s 53 stopped in turn 2 on lap 3 and the yellow flag flew. The 2R of Don Rinke and Gary Saathoff’s 96 got hooked together on the restart and the action slowed again. Anderson jumped into the lead on the restart with Jones taking second the next lap. Lap 5 saw Cory Hutchison’s 96C get hung up on the implement tire in turn 2 for another yellow. Vollbrecht took fourth on the restart and jumped to second the next time around as Kyle Prauner moved the 5K into fourth. Prauner moved to third the next lap and Saathoff grabbed fourth on lap 12. Vollbrecht took the lead on lap 15 with Saathof moving to second on lap 18. Lap 20 saw Saathoff move to second and Anderson taking third again. At the end it was Vollbrecht, Saathoff, Anderson and Prauner.

Vollbrecht left before being interviewed.

Mike Hansen’s 94 spun to a stop at the top of turn 1 on the start of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Feature as 3 other cars spun to the infield. Garrett Bolander’s 98X led the first lap with Derrick Noonan’s 21, the 62 of Justin Busboom and Ron Novak’s 14 rounding out the top 4. Roy Armstrong moved the #6 into fourth on lap 6. 2 laps later Busboom advanced to second and took the lead on the next lap. Lee Kracht cracked the top 4 on lap 16 and moved to third the next time around but Tommy Defreece’s 2X topped in turn 4. At that time the top four were Busboom, Bolander, Kracht and Noonan. Armstrong again moved into fourth on the restart and moved up to third the next lap as Kracht took second. The final top 4 were Busboom, Kracht, Armstrong and Bolander.

Busboom’s second win, but first this season came from his outside third row starting position and was very welcome. “I want to thank Roger and Michelle for tonight’s track, I like the dry-slick tracks” he said. He finished by saying “I owe this to my Dad, Brandon and Luke. That’s both A Features in the hobbys tonight for Spyder Race Cars”. Justin’s sponsors include Woods Brothers Realty, All Care and Spyder Race Cars.

Roger “Chevy” Hadan’s #4 was the first back to the flagstand on the RevHoney IMCA Modified A. The next three were there 21H of Shane Hiatt, Chris Ableson’s 1X and Chris Alcorn’s 3. The final top four were Kinnersley, Olsen, Lindblad and Gannon.

“I want to thank Chad Bassinger for all of his help this year” Kinnersley stated. He continued by saying “I think that’s 7 heat wins in a row for me. If that’s not a record it has to be close. I know it’s a record for me. I owe this to my Dad, Casey Moyer and Chad Bassinger”. His last statement was “Did I say thanks to Chad Bassinger yet”.

The last makeup feature was for the Budweiser 360 Sprints. Doug Lovegrove’s 44, the 28 of Ken Klabunde, Stu Snyder’s 23S and Jay Russell in the 76 were the top four on lap 1. Russell moved into third on lap 10. 6 more laps had been run when Gene Ackland’s 14G and the 0 of Jeff Osborn got togehter in turn 2. At that time it was Boston, Snyder, Russell and the 77 of John Klabunde who had cracked the top 4 the lap previous. In the closing laps Klabunder passed Russell to make the final top 4 Boston, Snyder, Klabunde and Russell.

On the restart Jones spun out, collecting Marty Steinbach’s 5, the 5K of Kyle Prauner, Nelson Vollbrecht’s 11X and the 22K of Kevin Anderson, who ended up on the bottom of the pile. At that point it was Danley, Jochum, Thompson and Schidler. Schidler spun 1 lap after the restart and the race was called on time. The final top four were Danley, Thompson, Jochum and Gary Saathoff.

Danley stated “Thank God for that restart! We finally hit the set-up and managed to miss all the wrecks for a change and got my first win”. He finished the interview by stating “I need to thank my Dad and my Uncle for putting my motor back together this week. It made a big difference”. Danley’s sponsors include Super Saver, H & H Drywall and Clean Rite Sweeping.

The next A was for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks. Tommy Defreece’s 2X, the 14 of Ron Novak, Ben Becher in the B4 and Garrett Bolander’s 98X were the top four on lap 1. Kracht fell back shortly after that and the final top four were Beckman, Hansen, Armstrong and Becher.

“Although I haven’t raced every week this year it’s good to get a win. I promised myself I would win 1 race every year” Beckman stated. “I want to thank my family and friends for coming out to support me when I race, and without my crew I wouldn’t be here at all. Plus I need to thank Roger for always putting on a great show for the fans” he continued. He finished by relating “Spyder Race Cars got both Hobby Features tonight, and that shows what great cars they are”. Beckman’s sponsors include Spyder Race Cars, Dicky & Burham, Miller Custom Cabinets, Terry’s Body Shop, Natalie John’s Photography, Speedy Steve’s High Performance and Tim & Beth Kozak.

The RevHoney IMCA Modifieds were next on the high banks. Aaron Pella’s 3A, the 8J of Joe Borer, Dustin Anderson’s 8A and the 13 of Doug Deterding were out front on lap 1. Smith and Saathoff both passed Alcorn both passed Alcorn the next time around and moved into second and third on the last couple of laps. At the end the top 4 were Ableson, Smith, Saathoff and Zoubek.

“The car was a handfull at times, but it sure was fun” said Ableson. “The bottom groove was good at first, and I saw that Bob was running there, but so was everyone else. Only 3 of us were running the top” he continued. He finished the interview by relating “This place has been pretty much kicking my butt this year, but, all together we’ve been close. It’s always great to win here, and that makes the long drive home to Sioux city a lot easier”.

The Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compact Finale was up next. Trevor Noonan’s 66, the 00 of Barry Kinnersley and Matt Moyer’s 29 were out front at the end of lap 1. The top 4 were Lindblad, Moyer, Olsen and Kinnersley.

“This was my first win here at Eagle, and I’ll tell you that I didn’t want that last caution because I didn’t want to have to fight Moyer off any more. The track was great tonight; I love a dry slick track” Lindblad said. Nick’s sponsors are Roca Storage and C & O Ford.
