Jr Fan Club Night wins go to Chapman, Horsham, Andersen, Borgman & Ware

By Greg Soukup

Junior Fan Club Pajama Jam, presented by Colby Ridge at Eagle Raceway Saturday saw a big crowd in attendance. The low 90’s temperatures were lessened by a nice breeze. With some tracks being rained out, the ranks of the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Modified and Hoosier Tire IMCA Modified classes swelled. Four heats were run in both classes with the Sport Mods running a C and B Feature and the Modifieds requiring a 16 car B Feature.

Possibly the best part of the evening was at intermission when the youngsters in the crowd were treated to free rides around the high banks in race cars driven by some of the competitors.

The only serious incident occurred in the second heat for the Duros Dent Works IMCA Racesaver Sprints when Andrew Jackson’s 5A ended up rolling over. He was not badly hurt but his racer was too badly damaged to continue.

Dana Deeke’s 36 led the field after lap 1 of the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Modified A Feature. Lap 2 saw Shawn Harker jump up to third in the 40 as Joe Feyen put the 25X into fourth. Dion Kovar moved the 18 into first place on lap 5 with Harker second, Deeke third and the 76 of Lance Borgman in fourth. Borgman vaulted up to second the next lap. Amber Cook’s 21 stopped at the top of turn 1 on lap 9 to slow the action. Borgman used the restart to grab the lead. Gunnar Pike put the 25 into fourth the next lap and took the third spot after another circuit. Pike moved up to second with 7 to go. With 3 to go Harker moved up to third and Cole Wayman put the 18W into fourth the next lap. Borgman won, Pike was second, Harker third and Wayman fourth.

Borgman left before being interviewed.

Spencer Galaway put the 45 out front of the first circuit for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A with Ben Becher’s B4 second, the 2C of Dave Carter third and the 12 of Michael Wade rounded out the top 4. Roy Armstrong passed Wade on lap 2 to put the 6R into fourth. Nate Buck looped the 56 the next lap for a caution. Armstrong jumped up to second with Becher third and Carter fourth. There was a 3-car pileup on the front stretch with Buck, Khrysta Stransky’s 39 and the 20 of Chad Borgman involved. Armstrong grabbed the lead on the restart. Jeff Ware cracked the top 4 on lap 7 putting his 83 into third and moved up to second the next lap as Carter retained the fourth spot. Armstrong appeared to be on his way to the win, pulling away from the field but he bobbled in turns 3 & 4 with 10 to go. That allowed Ware to move into first as Armstrong recovered to stay in second. Carter moved up to third 2 laps later as Brooke Fluckiger put the 2B into fourth.

I asked Jeff what he had to say for himself, and he replied “It’s freaking hot!!! I don’t know…..I can’t believe that Roy messed up like that. He literally just about spun out! I was just lucky to be there, and that’s probably about what it was going to take for me to win. He messed up, I pounced on it and it was a done deal”. Ware’s sponsors include Roth Racing, Shane’s Repair, Demon Decals, Charger Chassis, T & R Repair, Integra Shocks and Avenue Bar.

The Hoosier Tire IMCA Modified A was next. The 1RS of Rodney Stopak, Scott Bivens’ S56, Clint Homan in the 27 and the 8C of Chad Andersen were the top 4 after 1 circuit. Lap 2 saw Austin Svoboda loop the 16 in 3 & 4. Homan and Andersen moved up a spot and Johnny Saathoff put the 96J into fourth as Bivens fell back. Homan and Andersen grabbed the top 2 spots the next lap as Stopak fell to third. Saathoff also got past Stopak on lap 4, moving up to third. Andersen grabbed the lead from Homan after another circuit as Nathan Landauer put the 11N into fourth. Mike Densberger took that spot the next time around in the 81. Saathoff advanced to second with 7 circuits remaining. That made the top 4 Andersen, Saathoff, Homan and Densberger.

“We really haven’t been finishing where we should. We kind of got off on set-up, trying to reinvent the wheel a little bit. We went back to some notes from a year ago on shocks and a bunch of things that we overlooked. And now, we’re back to where we should be. We shouldn’t have gotten that far off, but we did. But now the car is good; it’s good through traffic, it’s good in the mud and the slick. So, we should be pretty good. I want to thank Mike Beam at Runner Freight. Those guys help out tremendously. Also, Ben and Cassie, Jake and April, Brian Mullins. I can’t say enough about my crew. Andy for sure. Pat drives up once a week from Lincoln to work on the car and that’s an hour and 20-minute drive; I can’t thank him enough. Of course, I have to give a big thank you to my girlfriend for putting up with all of the hours I spend in the shop. I don’t want to forget her son and my son for helping out in the shop” he said. Andersen’s other sponsors include Flatfoot Trucking, Sardeson Racing, Only Pro Decals, Candy Wrappers, Mad Man Chassis and Goldfuss Racing and Fab.

Ray Harrington in the 70, Tim Horsham’s 3, the 55N of Luke Nicholson and RJ Maas in the 88K led the field after the first circuit in the ATV Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact finale. Horsham and Maas both passed Harrington on lap 2 as Brad Gallagher put the 26X into fourth. Josh Young got past Gallagher the next time around in the 13J. Young moved up to third on lap 9 but lost the spot to Gallagher the next lap. Steffen Oaks took over fourth in his #17 with 7 circuits remaining, moved up to third with 2 to go and advanced to second the final lap. At the end it was Horsham, Oaks, Maas and Gallagher.

Horsham was all smiles when I interviewed him. “I was starting to think I was too old to win any more, and even told everyone that I might be able to get a second or third here and there, but not a win. I had just lost that killer instinct. Would you believe that I spent 4 months taking this car apart, checking it over and putting it back together. I took out ever nut and bolt, checked and lubricated every part before putting it back together and it’s paying off. I learned my lesson. I made sure that every part was good. When I got past Harrington and Nicholson after they got together, I said to myself ‘Well, if I’m ever going to win one ever again, this is my chance’ and there was no looking back from there. I just concentrated and hit my marks every lap. That ended up being the difference.  When I saw the white flag I just started yelling ‘No yellow!! No yellow!!!’. I have to thank two young ladies that own a company that makes decals; Dvine Dsign. They did a wonderful job on the decals for the car and it really looks classy” he stated. Horsham’s sponsors also include U Pull-It.

The Duros Dent Works Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car A Main saw Neil Nickolite’s 12N out front after a lap followed closely by Keith Dragoo’s 77D, the 20 of Tim Hilfiker and Ryan King’s 93. Lap 2 saw contact between the 91JV of Adam Gullion and Mike Boston’s 51 in turn 2. Boston went flying as both cars came to rest right side up and ended up being towed to the pits. King advanced to third on lap 4. Toby Chapman put the 40X into fourth the next lap. King took over second on lap 7. Chapman moved up to third on lap 11 and advanced to second after 2 more laps. King slowed dramatically with 10 to go, allowing Chad Koch to put the 22C into fourth. The next time around Chapman grabbed the lead the next lap, but someone made contact with an implement tire guarding the infield and the yellow flag flew, negating the pass. Clint Benson took the #100 to the fourth spot with 7 to go and moved up to third the next lap as Koch stayed in fourth. Nickolite got sideways in turn 4 with 2 laps remaining and Chapman made contact but kept going. Nickolite was sent to the rear of the field for causing the caution. That moved everyone up and allowed Trevor Grossenbacher’s 95 to take up the fourth spot. Benson moved to second on the restart but lost the spot to Koch the last circuit. At the checkers it was Chapman, Koch, Benson and Grossenbacher.

“I don’t know what happened out there. Somebody got a little loose. It was a good race. I didn’t know at the start if we were going to be good enough, but once we got rolling, I said to myself ‘Oh yeah! We’re good enough!!’. That’s our first win in a couple of years now. I thought that maybe I was getting too old to do this. I’ve got to thank the Bogue family. I can’t thank them enough for letting me drive their car” he related. Sponsors include Leifert Construction, Penelope’s ‘Lil Café and Husker Lock & Key.
