Jr. Fan Club Night victories go to Harder Bassinger, Kracht, Saathoff and Jordan

By Greg Soukup

With the very cold temperatures the previous two weeks replaced by 90+ degree and very windy weather, the fans and racers who showed up at Eagle Raceway for Jr. Fan Club Night sponsored by Colby Ridge saw three and four wide racing all the way into the A Features. The Lincoln Saltdogs presented Mascot Wars 2012 with plenty of mascots in the stands for the fans. There was a kids Candy Dash at intermission also.

There were no significant instances in the preliminary events.

First up in the A Main lineup was the NAPA IMCA Sport Modifieds. Kevin Anderson’s 22K, Kyle Driskell in the 33D, Shelly Andersen’s 5S and the 2G of Geoff Olson were the top 4 at the end of the first lap. Chris Langdale looped the #68 in turn 3 on lap 2, then on the restart Jared Cote spun the 57 in turns 1 & 2. Matt Richards jumped all the way to third in his 1R on lap 3 and Olson moved into fourth. Richards moved up to second the next time around. Tyler Ringe spun his #690 on lap 6 for another yellow flag. Olson moved up to the third position on the restart. Todd Boulware moved the 14X into fourth on lap 8 then moved to third 3 laps later buy lost that spot and another position as Max Harder passed him in the 34 and the next lap Karl Brewer got his #13 into fourth. Richards grabbed the lead on the 13th circuit. The next time around Harder leapt into the second spot. Gary Saathoff cracked the top 4 on lap 16 and Harder took the lead for good on the next to last lap. The top 4 at the finish were Harder, Richards, Anderson and Saathoff.

“I really need to thank Chris Ableson. We talked during intermission, and he said I should run the top in turns 1 & 2. I tried it, and that’s what let me get the win” Harder said. He finished the interview by relating “A big thanks to my Mom, and also Jamie, Andrea, Russell and Kelly”. Max’s sponsors include Twin Rivers, Steve Swarthout and TY’s Tobacco.

The Valentinos IMCA Hobby Stock Feature saw three and four wide competition throughout and the battle for the top spot itself was well worth the price of admission. The 62 of Justin Busboom held the lead at the end of lap 1 with Garett Bolander’s 98X, the 10K of Lee Kracht and Chad Fegley’s 13F second through fourth. Kracht passed Bolander on lap 3 for the second spot. He took just 2 more circuits to overtake Busboom for the point. Fegley passed Bolander on lap 10 with Roy Armstrong’s 6R moving to fourth the next time around. From there to the checkers Busboom and Kracht swapped the lead, running side-by-side most of the time. RJ Macku moved the 1R into fourth with 6 to go for the final change in the top four. The final top 4 positions were Kracht, Busboom, Armstrong and Macku.

Kracht said “Tell Roger thank you for giving us one hell of a track every week. No other track gets 180 cars every week and still gets done by 11”. Lee continued saying “Thanks to my crew. I wouldn’t be here without Justin, Ed, Preston and Al. Also, Dale at Big Daddy Race Cars. I talked to him this week because we were having problems. He had us change some things and we won”. He finished by stating “I need to thank my wife. It’s her birthday but she let me come racing anyway”. Kracht’s sponsors include Hartford Glass, Demon Decals, Sieh Farms, Jay’s Tire, Jonos Race Engines, Janzing Truck & Tractor Repair, Tunnisen Pheasant Hunting and Diamond Farms.

The Nebraska Drive Shaft & Radiator IMCA Modifieds were up next. Shane Hiatt’s 21H led the first circuit followed by Chad Andersen in the 8C, Justin Wulf’s 86 and the 95 of Dylan Smith. Smith passed Wulf to take third on lap 2. Andersen took over first on lap 3. The first caution of the race came on lap 4 when Tim Ward’s 4TW spun in turn 2. Johnny Saathoff used the restart to grab fourth in his 96J. The next circuit saw Hiatt retake first. Smith grabbed the point the next time around only to lose the spot to Andersen who moved back to the lead the same lap. Stacey Wilhelm spun the 3W on lap 8 in turn 2. Chris Ableson’s 1X moved to fourth on the restart. Ableson got into Smith shortly after that and Smith spun out. Ableson was moved to the rear of the field also for the contact. That made the running order Andersen, Hiatt, Saathoff and the #3 of Chris Alcorn. Wulf spun in turn 4 on lap 12. Bob Zoubek got the 5S into fourth the next lap. There were just 4 laps left when Saathoff overtook Hiatt for second. Andersen, whose left rear tire was smoking badly for the past few laps went to the infield with a flat with 3 to go. That moved Alcorn back into the fourth position. Mike Densberger, who had made the A Feature by winning the B got his #81 into fourth past Alcorn on the last circuit.

Saathoff said “The 96J Jet car was mighty special tonight. I was able to run great on the top, and that’s where I like it. It was another great track, thanks to Roger and the crew”. Saathoff’s sponsors include 96KX, JR Motorsports and Toobie’s Lumber.

The Exhaust Pros IMCA Sport Compact A Main’s first lap was lead by the 45SX of Matt Schellpeper with Larry Cronin’s 5, the 85 of Nathan Scribner and Kyle Gannon’s 66G close behind. Chad Bassinger moved the 4X into fourth on lap #2, then passed Scribner before the completion of the lap. Kevin Fearing’s 48 took over the fourth spot the next time around. Bassinger moved to second on lap 5 and Fearing advanced to third the next lap. Scott Spellmeier cracked the top 4 on lap 8 in his 88S. Bassinger moved to the lead on lap 10 as Spellmeier moved to third. The next circuit Spellmeier grabbed second and took the lead for good with two to go. At the checkers it was Spellmeier, Bassinger, Fearing and Gannon. During post-race inspection however, Spellmeier’s racer was found to have an illegally modified rear suspension. That made Bassinger the winner and Matt Moyer’s 29 moved up to fourth.

Chad began his interview by relating “I told you to give me a lucky wristband, and you did!!’. He continued by saying “I hate to see Scott get DQ’ed, but it is what it is. The track was great as usual, and I’m glad to put the blue oval in the winner’s circle for the second week in a row”. His last statement was “I want to thank Jeremy Sammons, Matt, Maynard, Barry and Nick for their help”. Bassinger’s sponsors include Landis Engines, Higgley Chiropractic, Kreifel Plumbing and Shippley Flooring.

The final race of the evening was for the Budweiser 360 Sprint Cars. Kaley Gharst’s 6X, the 51 of Mike Boston, Jack Dover in the 53 and Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35 were the first four back to the flag stand on lap 1. Boston moved past Gharst for the lead on lap 2. Mark Finnell’s 27 blew the engine in turn 4 on lap 4. Dover took advantage of the restart to pass Gharst for second. Terry Holliman did a 360 degree spin on the next lap and the caution lights were lit again. Gharst took his car to the pits during the yellow. That moved the 4 of Jordan Boston into fourth. Jordan moved to third on lap 5. Dover got past Mike Boston on the next lap and Mark Pace moved his #31 into second. Lap 12 saw Jordan Boston jump all the way into the top spot and Pace take second. The next time around Grossenbacher moved to the second spot. Mike Boston regained fourth on lap 14, only to lose the spot back to Dover 2 laps later. The final yellow flag of the evening came on lap 23 as the 09 of Matt Juhl slowed to a stop in turn four. The final top four were Jordan Boston, Grossenbacher, Pace and Dover.

“My thanks go to Rick and Michelle Bowers, and to Dave, Steve and the whole crew. We had a brand new car tonight, and it feels great to get the win”. Jordan’s sponsors include Select Auto Body, Select Auto Sales, Bolz Farms, Tuxedo Painting and Revolution Wraps.
