Jailhouse Rock night wins go to Legg, Armstrong, Hoefelman, Fearing and Bade

Jailhouse Rock night wins go to Legg, Armstrong, Hoefelman, Fearing and Bade

by Greg Soukup

Jailhouse Rock Night, presented by Great Clips saw very warm temperatures lead to a beautiful night for racing as 138 cars took to the high banks of Eagle Raceway Saturday night. 17 heat races and 4 B Features were run without major incident, leading up to the main events in all 5 classes.

The NAPA IMCA Sport Modified feature’s first lap saw Mike Hansen’s 94 the first one back to the flag stand with Joe Schidler’s K00, Steve Osmon’s 4J and the 18 of Dion Kovar close behind. Gary Saathoff passed Kovar for fourth in his 96 on lap 5 before taking over third on lap 7. A couple of laps later Benji Legg moved his 25B into fourth. James Hopkins looped the 81 on the front stretch with 12 to go. Legg took over third on the restart. Schidler grabbed the lead on the next circuit. 2 laps later Legg advanced to second and then passed Schidler the next time around for the lead. 2 more laps were in the books when Trent Roth jumped all the way into third in the 14T. Saathoff moved back to fourth the following lap and Roth moved to second after another circuit. The final change in the top four came on the last lap as Mark Leiting took fourth in the 20M.

This was Legg’s first win at Eagle this season. “We’ve really been struggling the last few weeks. As bad as it’s been, we’ve stayed close to the points lead. All of the tracks have been having so much trouble with all of this rain, but we finally found the right set-up. None of this would have been possible without Johnny, Chris and Brian’s help” Legg said. Legg’s sponsors include Jet Racing and Toobie’s Lumber.

Don Hall Jr.’s 92, the 2C of David Carter, the 88P of Rick Bradley and the 29 of Tim Kozak were out front at the end of lap 1 in the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A. Justin Busboom got around Bradley on lap 6 to put the 62 in fourth. Busboom relinquished the spot to the 6R of Roy Armstrong on lap 9, but Roy gave the spot up to his son Adam Armstrong, putting the 6A fourth the next lap. Both Armstrong’s moved up 1 spot the next time around as Adam grabbed third and Roy regained fourth. Adam jumped into the lead on lap 14 and Carter retained second, Roy held onto third and Hall was fourth. They held those positions to the checkers.

Armstrong’s victory came after starting outside of row 8, following a win in the B Feature where he ended up after peeling the skin off of the right side of his racer in his heat and was his third win in a row and fourth overall on the 2015 season. “It’s always awesome racing here because of the great fan support! It was a great Father’s Day present because my son was here. I suppose I should have let my dad win, but that wasn’t going to happen” related Armstrong. Armstrong’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Hummer Contracting, Ron Fox and Sons Motorsports, Scat Cranks and Icon Pistons.

The Kaplan University IMCA Modified main event was led by Chad Andersen’s 8C, followed by Aaron Pella’s 3A, Justin Wulf in the 86 and the 11N of Nathan Landauer. Wulf moved to second on lap 4 with Jared Joefelman putting the 15H into third. Tim Pickens’00 stopped on lap 7 and Andersen headed to the pits. That made the top 4 Wulf, Hoefelman, the 14 of Matthew Kiner and Pella. Landauer again took fourth on the restart. Hoefelman snagged the lead on lap 9. Landauer moved to third on lap 14 and Shane Hiatt cracked the top 4 putting the 21H into that spot. 3 laps later Hiatt passed Landauer for third. Kiner stopped in turns 3 & 4 with 1 to go, bringing out a green, white checkered finish. On the restart Johnny Saathoff put the 96J into fourth, making the final top 4 Hoefelman, Wulf, Hiatt and Saathoff.

This was Hoefelman’s first Eagle Raceway victory, coming in his 8th year of racing. “This is such an exciting place to win! There is so much good equipment here, and such great racers. I want to thank BMS Chassis and all of my sponsors for making this win possible” Hoefelman stated.

Kole Krichau put the 30K in front of Kyle Owen’s 10K, the 88K of RJ Maas and Kevin Fearing’s 48 after the first lap of the Sam’s Club IMCA Sport Compact A Feature. Maas took over second on lap 2. Larry Cronin spun the #5 backwards into the pit entrance on lap 4 for the first caution of the race. Maas went very high in turn 4 on the restart, allowing Fearing to take third and Jeremy Baker to pass him also in the 3J.  Fearing would move to second on lap 7 before grabbing the lead the next time around. Baker moved to third on lap 9 before giving the spot to Owen after another circuit. Krichau’s engine began blowing smoke with 4 to go, that moved Baker to second. Baker moved to third and Matt Moyer’s 29 took over fourth with 2 to go as Krichau stopped in turn 2 with a blown engine. The top four at the finish were Fearing, Owen, Baker and Moyer.

Fearing said “This is a new car, and it’s taken a lot of time to work the kinks out, but we’ve got it going now. This second win really feels great! Thanks a lot to my wife Brandy and my folks for sticking by me”. Fearing’s sponsors include Low Budget Customs, Broadmoor Development and H I S Auto Care.

Shayle Bade made a huge move, taking her 03 from her third row outside starting spot to the lead of the Racesaver IMCA Sprint Car Main. Kyle Flodman in the 7K, Eric Reichwaldt’s 13 and the 4zU of Dwight Carter were hot on her push bar however. The next lap Reichwaldt moved into second, Joey Danley’s 14 snagged third and Terry Richards’18 took fourth. Clint Benson’s 100 and the 1B of Brandon Horton looped it at the top of turn 1 on lap 8. Trevor Grossenbacher moved past Richards on the restart, putting his 35 into fourth. The following lap the red flag flew as a melee occurred in the entrance to turn 1 when Grossenbacher’s right rear made contact with Reichwaldt’s left front, sending Reichwaldt spinning, then flipping. That caused Mike Boston’s 51, the 62 of Tim Fricke and Gene Ackland’s 14G to come crashing into him. Reichwaldt, Boston, Fricke, Ackland and the 1R of Matt Richards all were done for the evening. At that time the top 4 were Bade, Danley, Terry Richards and Grossenbacher. Grossenbacher moved up to third on lap 11 with Lovegrove advancing into fourth 2 laps later. Lap fourteen saw Grossenbacher move to second. With 4 to go, Adam Gullion stopped in turn 4 with a flat tire. Terry Richards moved back to fourth on the restart. Try as they might, nobody could catch Bade as she won by a straightaway. The top 4 were Bade, Grossenbacher, Danley and Terry Richards.

Tonight was Bade’s first Eagle Raceway victory of the year. “This is an awesome Father’s Day present for my dad! The car was absolutely awesome tonight. I got REALLY scared when I heard Trevor right behind me, but I just hit my marks and moved through traffic”. Bade’s sponsors include MDR, Carpetland and Chix Race Wear.
