Icebreaker Day 1 wins go to Grabouski, Meyer, Armstrong, and Borgman

Icebreaker Day 1 wins go to Grabouski, Meyer, Armstrong, and Borgman

Story by Greg Soukup: Warm and windy turned to cool and breezy. The pits were full and the track was fast. There was no ice in sight, but the Ice Breaker Challenge night #1 had plenty for all of those who attended Friday night.

Through all of the heats, C & B features there was just one major incident. The IMCA Sport Compact B feature saw Melissa Cronin’s 5M make contact with another racer and go snap-rolling through turn 2 and end up by the back stretch wall. She was not seriously injured.

The first A Feature was for the IMCA Sport Modifieds. Lance Borgman snagged the lead on lap 1 in his #76 with Justin Addison’s 26J, the 1J of Colby Langenberg and Don Rinke’s 2r rounding out the top 4. Lap 2 and 3 saw Rinke and Langenberg trade the third spot before Nate Thompson took it on lap 4. Kyle Prauner jumped the 5K all the way up to third after another circuit. Then it was Mark Leiting’s 20M and Langenberg battling for the fourth position beginning on lap 8 and Langenberg holding the spot on lap 9. The only caution came with 5 to go when Dion Kovar spun the #18 in turn 2. That cancelled out Borgman’s ½ lap lead. Trent Roth took over fourth from Langenberg with 4 laps left, but Langenberg grabbed the spot back with 2 to go. That made the final top 4 Borgman, Addison, Prauner and Langenberg.

“I got lucky with a front row starting spot. The track was really decent tonight, with different racing grooves. That late race caution made me really nervous though. I wasn’t sure who was where, so I knew I had to go! Thanks to my pit crew tonight; my Dad Lawrence and Billy I held them off” said Borgman. Borgman’s sponsors include Coordsen Farms, Penner Insurance, Jet Racing, Hergott Farms and Hamilton Construction.

Next was the IMCA Hobby Stock A Main. Tyler Saathoff in the 16T, Mark McKinney’s 23, the 69 of Kenny Roberts and the 6R of Roy Armstrong led the first circuit. Lap 2 saw Armstrong pass Roberts for third. Rick Bradley spun his 88P in turn 4 on the fourth lap to bring out the caution flag. Justin Busboom put the 62 into fourth on the restart. Lap 6 saw Armstrong move to second. Damon Richards passed Busboom for fourth with 10 to go. Armstong passed Saathoff with 7 to go to snag the lead. The top 4 went unchanged until the cars came to the checkered flag. Richards got sideways coming to the finish line; his right side tires dug in and his racer jumped into the air, flipping but coming down on its tires. That allowed the 83 of Jeff Ware to come home in fourth. Armstrong, Saathoff and McKinney led him to be the top 3.

“I started 6th, but got a good start. The track was really good tonight. Good and racy, with multiple grooves. Thanks to Roger for the great racing surface. I want to thank tonight’s pit crew, John and Jake. Also, my girlfriend Jo for all of her support” stated Armstrong. Armstrong’s sponsors include Hemmer Construction, NEAPCO, and Schmidt Machine.

The IMCA Sport Compacts were up next for their A Feature. Kyle Owen’s 3B led the pack back to the flag stand on lap 1 with RJ Maas’ 88K, the 14 of Ryan Smith and Ramsey Meyer in the 21R chasing him. Meyer passed Smith on lap 2 to take 3rd. Melissa Etherton stopped in the pit entrance the next time around with a fire under the hood that was quickly extinguished. After the red lights were turned out, Justin Olsen put his 15J into fourth on the restart and Meyer moved up to second. 1 more lap saw Meyer grab the lead. Fred Johnson’s 69 came to a halt at the top of 3 & 4 the next time around and the yellow flag was brought out. With 8 to go Cole Krichau took over 4th in the 30K and moved up to third a few laps later. That made the final top 4 Meyer, Owen, Krichau and Maas.

“I loved the track tonight. I have so much fun here and would love to get the chance to race here more often because the track falls right into my driving style. Thanks to my Dad and brother, because without them I wouldn’t have a car even close to what they give me every time out. Also a big thank you to my Mom and grandparents for all that they do for me. And I want to say that Doug Haas does the BEST alignments anywhere” Meyer said. Meyer’s sponsors include Tom’s Service, Norfolk Transmission, Charger Chassis and Renner Auto Body.

Jordan Grabouski’s 30G led the field at the end of lap 1 followed by the 25C of Ricky Stephan, Scott Smith in the 50 and Nathan Landauer’s 11N. Stephan passed Grabouski on lap 2, but Grabouski got back past him 2 laps later. Smith moved to second on lap 8 and Chris Ableson passed Landauer to put the 1X into fourth. Laundauer got back past Ableson with 10 to go. Ryan Gaylord cracked the top 4 with 4 to go, and then advanced the 77T to third the next time around. The final top 4 were Grabouski, Smith, Gaylord and Stephan.

Grabouski related “Starting 4th didn’t hurt me tonight, thanks to the awesome track! That was the best track here in a long time. It felt good to get a win in front of Tommy Mook and Wojo”. Grabouski’s sponsors include Tommy Mook and Wojo, Friesen Crate Motors, Twin Rivers and Denny at CPD Shocks.

Night 2 of the 2016 Ice Breaker Challenge tonight sees the pit gates open at 4 P.M. Pit passes are $25. Front gates open at 5 P.M. Adult admission is $15, youths 6-12 are just $5 and children 5 and under are free.
